Got a chance to interview Hooky yesterday. I'm not posting the full thing until next week when we get a bit closer to the U.S. tour (which is much of what the interview is about), but we did talk about some New Order stuff, including the Waiting for the Sirens' Call outtakes.

Here's what he had to say:

Peter Hook: New Order to release 7 songs from 'Waiting for the Sirens' Call' sessions

Blimey. Good news.

Interesting - in some ways I would prefer them to be packaged as part of a 2 Disc Deluxe version of WFTSC. At least then we might get a new remaster (and hopefully improved) version of the the original album.

Not sure about Hooky's idea of slinging them together with the Control tracks (the two sets of tracks are not related in any way after all).

Release it as an EP with lovely new artwork and call it 'End' or something

Some proper news at long last. Brilliant.

I really hope they go for the WFTSC Deluxe Edition idea. Disc 1 being the original album properly remastered along the lines of Total so it's not brickwalled and sonically dead like the 2005 CD. Disc 2 containing Hellbent, the rest of the outtakes plus the full length versions of the Control soundtrack instrumentals as Hooky mentions.

It would be a fantastic full stop for the band and the fans would at long last get a quality product from the record label. We're due one after the past few years.

It would be a bonus disc, I don't care if the tracks are related or not.

great news. you get the impression though that if Hooky wanted the album called "Black", the rest of New Order would want it called "White".

I wouldnt mind either way its released. WFTSC is the only NO album I didnt buy.

I think we'll be waiting a while, but I'm happy it's going to get out.

If it's released as a separate album that's another for Hooky to tour around 2020 or something.

WOO HOOOOO!! :jump: I've moaned before that this was being ignored. Finally it...isn't. Great to have some real news on Digital Republic rather than just "What's your fave NO song to pick your nose to".

Just one thing I dont understand in Hooky's comments. He says "I’m asking for a standalone (release). They’re suggesting we repackage Waiting for the Sirens’ Call. I keep telling them it will do them no good, because once once person has it, it will be up on the Internet and nobody will have to buy it anyway.”

No matter how its released it can be put on the internet. Is Hooky suggesting that if it's released as a standalone with new artwork we're more likely to buy the physical product? Or am I missing something more obvious?

I'm thinking Sirens could always be re-released with different artwork (the orange and white "NO" front image wasn't the original intended artwork I believe- the Asian tsunami had an influence there if I recall correctly). And the bonus disk could still have everything Hooky suggests.

Shall we open bets on how Rhino will completely and utterly fuck this release up?

My money's on they'll press the first 500 copies with Joy Division's Still or something rather than the outtakes or they'll have audio in the left stereo channel only. Finally, the album will catch fire and burn your house down while you're out at the supermarket.

Seriously, after the 2008 reissues they're lucky we buy anything from them at all. In order for this to be a success they will need at least one member of the band overseeing the process full time (probably Steve) like Total so let's hope that happens.

I have a very, very bad feeling they'll try and do something perverse like vinyl only with 128kbps MP3 files offered alongside. CD please Warners, if you're reading.

I'm very excited!!! Hey, a new album after all!!

But 7 tracks? It's too much for an "EP" and too little for an album. However, let's see.

  1. DELUXE EDITION. I wouldn't feel like buying a 2xCD version of WFTSC, where CD1 is exactly the same as my WFTSC CD. Now, if they'll tweak the original album somehow, it's a different story. I'm talking about throwing out tracks like Working Overtime, maybe include a remix of Jetstream instead of the original version. Rearrange the track order, maybe mix the outtakes and album tracks between the two CDs. Just come up with some creativity in regards to the original. Basically how it was done with One True Passion, v.2.

  2. STANDALONE EDITION. I love the Control tracks, BUT they are too short and too experimental in comparison to the sound of Hellbent. So I don't see how it will work, unless, the outtakes have a similar sonic approach (but again Hellbent is very straightforward). Maybe they could include the 2001-2002 B-sides, or alternative versions of the WFTSC tracks?

I wonder what the cover art would be like. I liked the WFTSC & Total covers, although they were not that unique, but at least it was the right direction. In contrast, Get Ready had an appalling Smiths-like cover.

BTW, I agree with Hook's sentiments over these tracks. The band is no more, yet we have these tracks hanging there and getting old for no purpose. It may be a proper way to close the chapter.

Ideally, I wouldn't mind buying it if it were a remastered edition of WFTSC with the unreleased tracks as a bonus disc---or at least, only those 7 tracks as an EP/album (not with the songs from the Control soundtrack though). If the mastering is done properly, and if people find it worthy enough to buy, I'm sure the fans who want to buy it would buy it.

Hooky said this

They’re suggesting we repackage Waiting for the Sirens’ Call. I keep telling them it will do them no good, because once once person has it, it will be up on the Internet and nobody will have to buy it anyway.

but I disagree with him. The fans would be interested (at least some fans) if they think it's a good product. But if it was a bad remastering job (like the other bonus disc+ remasters) or if it were another 'best-of' collection, then maybe not.

A remastered WFTSC with a bonus disc would make sense, throw on a couple of remixes like that were on the "WFTSC" singles. Doubt that they would get much attention thou with just a WFTSC reissue.

The 7 songs would have to be solid to merit a stand alone album. The Control songs don't really sound like they stand on their own. They could throw on those iTunes live songs they recorded and released mp3 only, but that is rather lame.

Maybe the 7 tracks and a recent B side collection including "Here to Stay" and "Vietnam", all the non album tracks in one place as a career mop up. Call it... Sober and Pissed

I don't see why the Control tracks need releasing with this, they've been released, that's it. Done.

I think these are the names of the 7 tracks.

1 - Sugarcane 2 - Madonna 3 - Brothers & Sisters 4 - Mending a Broked Heart 5 - Global Trekker 6 - It's a dream Sequence 7 - A circle around your heart.

Seven songs (a) as great as Hellbent and (b) rejected in favour of Jetstream six years ago. Plus three instrumentals. What's the odds everyone's gonna get all excited about this then when they get to actually hear the stuff rip the poo outa it? Personally I think - and this was suggested years ago - they could put all these out on a single CD. I understand it'd be a bit hotch-potch, combining stuff from 2 different projects on one item... But I'm not into digital releases meself. And a Sirens repackage? Don't really wanna duplicate an album I wasn't overstruck by in the first place, and I can't imagine it needs remastering after a relatively short time. Anyway the main thing is we FINALLY get to hear this stuff! Any more info? All I know is - Hellbent (obviously), Sister and Brother (played at the Light's debut), Sugarcane (touted in the Sirens build-up) and a song spun by Hooky DJing ages ago which I think was called When You're Away. We'll see.

..sorry don't agree that Sirens doesn't need remastering at all. I just stuck the album into EAC and did a graphical analysis and it is horribly brickwalled. Just because an album is recent doesn't mean it is well mastered. In fact most of the best sounding CDs in my collection come from the 80s and early 90s (before the loudness wars kicked in).

Can't really comment Mr Tate as I'm a technophobe! I just thought it'd be strange bunging out a remaster of a fairly new LP. Mind you, Owen Morris remastered Electronic just 2 years on, so I'm talking shite again.

..the thing is you don't need a high end system to find out that Sirens and the Singles collection are horrible. Maybe this is part of the reason you didn't like Sirens. The fact is - with a half decent system most people will get a headache and feel antagonistic towards the album when it is done like the original Sirens. As soon as you hear a proper remaster you will hear the difference. For example the recent "Total" CD was OK and I sat through the whole 70 plus minutes without recourse to the Nurofen !

Possible titles...

Waiting For Tony Wilson's Call

Flogging A Dead Factory

Goodbye London (Hello Obscurity)

I'm such a cynic :-) but I love New Order really.

I really hope the "new" stuff is good, but after hearing Hellbent I ain't setting expectations too high.

If 2 out of the 7 tracks are gems, that'll do me. Not being negative, just realistic.

Just for the hell of it, I wouldn't mind them trying a different designer for the cover art - just a personal opinion, but I thought the WTFSC, Singles and Total albums had poor and lazy design. I do like most of Saville's earlier stuff, but I think he's lost his way a bit. Might be good to give some fresh talent with new ideas a try?

Well, this is good news. It does tell us two things :

  1. Those long lost songs will get a release. As they always should have.

  2. Reissues seem to be planned for Republic, GR, WFTSC

However, if this is on the second disc of WFTSC the huge number of vinyl only remixes around 2005-2006 will be lost - that's remixes of Krafty, Jetstream, Guilt, WFTSC, I Told You So, Regret, Toothache, Bacon Lettuce Tomato, EGG, Temptation - all of which would've made a half-decent bonus / updated remix disc in their own right. If that had been a bonus disc on one of the gazillion be+st of's I'd've bought it in a shot.

Though... the full 30 minute version fo "Soundtrack", anyone? That would make a nice 'bonus' track at the end of the regular version of Get Ready, for starters.

Well you say that, but they're gonna get back together. Bernard will say Hooky doesn't want to reform the band, then Hooky will say it's Bernard who doesn't want them to reform, then they'll both go "ok let's reform" just to spite each other :-)

Nah, not really - I think that's just about it now and we won't see NO together again.

I guess there's a tiny sliver of hope that in a few years if/when the rancour has died down that they could end up getting together to accept some sort of Brit lifetime achievment thing (IF it was offered), then if they got through that without killing each other MAYBE they'd do a couple of live gigs as a proper goodbye..... but, even in those unlikely circumstances, I seriously doubt we'd see any new recorded stuff.

In my very humble opinion it ain't NO without Peter. Was different when Gillian left, as it was on good terms and there was the possibility that she may have returned if/when appropriate.

If they've gone ahead without consulting Peter, then Hooky's head is probably exploding right about now. Hopefully what happened is the others consulted him and he gave it the OK on a one-off basis given it's a benefit for a friend. I guess we'll find out sooner or later.

A deluxe edition of WFTSC would tank.

  1. The group has been defunct now for half a decade
  2. The album lost them money even when they had tours and record label promotion to back it up
  3. Despite all the hype, the album received so/so reviews amongst both fans and critics

Honestly, if they truly want to profit from these leftover recordings, they should get Hooky on board for a couple final shows to put the nail in the coffin for New Order, promote it as such and watch as the tickets sell out instantly. After that, they could release a live greatest hits album and DVD set similar to Kraftwerk's Minimum Maximum with the leftover WFTSC tracks as a bonus disc. Throw the whole thing up on iTunes and Amazon for digital download so they don't have to press as many physical copies and viola... the story of New Order is dead and gone, physical copies sell out instantly and people still have the option of downloading at virtually no expense to the band.

I agree with everything you say and your suggestions make perfect sense.... but of course it won't happen like that coz it's New Order :-) They'll probably release the tracks on a 3.5 inch floppy disk that can only be purchased from a shop on the moon on the 32nd day of every other month.

I'd be happy enough to buy from itunes, but there's lots of audiophiles on here who'd bitch on about mp3 blah blah blah, lossy format blah blah blah, compression blah blah blah, need it in FLAC format blah bla blah :-)

See, but if they did limited pressings of it, the audiophiles and collectors have the option of buying the physical product while they last. A digital release afterward just assures that even if gets dumped on the net illegally, there's still a few people out there that will buy it for their iPhones and whatnot. They did this with the JD +- Singles box set already. Its been up on iTunes for awhile now.

There is something actually quite perverse yet appropriate about using Still as the title. Afterall, they used the Substance title for each band, so why not stick the final show around the breakup (Brazil 2006) as the final Hooky gigs at the back end of the album. I like that idea.

At long bloody last!!!

Agree with Hooky when he says that doing this will finally draw a line under the whole sorry saga.... this has been unfinished business for too long now - ALMOST SEVEN YEARS NOW.... so to finally get some closure on things is the best way to go about things.

Of course, what the other ex members - especially Bernard - say is another matter entirely....

I still hope that some of the tracks are better than Hellbent....

I guess people can throw ideas around left, right and centre but the reality is these new tracks will more than likely appear as the incentive and to create a "buzz" to promote the Republic, Get Ready and WFTSC re-issues, as already said as the bonus tracks for the last album. There's no way it'll be a "new" album the way things sit between Hook and everyone else currently.

Thats probably the best way, then everyone can buy (digitally) what they want.

Yeah, the more I think about it - if WFTSC didn't sell that well, why worry about what format it will be put out on? Just release them as they are, no padding with the Control soundtrack or anything else unless it's actually going to have some thought and effort behind it. A 7-song EP will surely sell about equal to a WFTSC 2-disc set? In fact the latter seems less likely to sell, with people paying for more songs that they probably already have anyway.

Really pleased we're gonna get to hear these tracks by the way!

I wouldn't bet my house, but I might bet yours. After all, never say never (only I just did, twice). Like... It should've been over when Ian died, then they made the biggest selling 12" ever. It should've been over when they did the side projects, then they had their first number one single and second number one album. And it should DEFINITELY have been over after 93, then they - finally - returned more united than ever... So who knows? I'm as much in the dark as anyone else, and I don't wanna get embroiled in all the bitchiness, but just maybe they'll be back one day...

You're thinking either funk or [prog] rock albums from the 70s aren't you???

Well... Just as two examples of albums that I love:

Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band Goes to Washington (1979)

Tongue In Chic (1982)

Introspective (1988) has 6!

They could also add the Turn remixes that were commissioned...

Wouldn't they have to agree on how, before this stuff comes out?:(

Sigh. If only Rob Gretton was still with us.

My first thought was to have a deluxe edition of WFTSC but that would have little resonance with the public. "Ah, fillers - stuff not good enough for a not particularly good album. No thanks."

If they did a double album with what we're purporting was the bonus disc as disc 1 and then have the GR and WFTSC B sides and rare vinyl only mixes spanning the decade on disc 2, then that looks far more attractive. It really would be closure.

'Closure' is not a bad title actually, and hints at 'Closer'.

If you think about it you'd have a double album with the singles and remixes that many lapsed New Order fans won't have plus a collection of 'new' unreleased material.

how about 'Still waiting for the siren's call'?

Does anybody know when these are coming out, why is it taking so long, there is no way the NEW new order can release these songs with the new ones because it will cause problems with the new and old new order copyright issues.

And besides, Hooky ain't gonna let it get THAT messy either or he will be down there in a swift jiffy armed with his lawsuits etc etc.....

Despite Hook's initial desire to get Lost Sirens out I hear that he has now withdrawn his permission so unfortunately the release is on hold.

The next New Order movie is going to be a very tedious 2 hours of JFK-style courtroom drama.

Wank.

If this is true then the only people he's going to piss off with that decision is the fans. We've been waiting five long years for this release and unless it's been stopped for a very good reason this just seems like point(less) scoring now.

The time to do what he's allegedly done was before the release was publicly announced rather than building up our hopes then initiating a veto.

Extremely disappointing.

Indeed - and the money that goes to the band (including Hooky) will be more for a pre-Christmas release...

Children in a playground, I dunno - we need somebody to bang all of their heads together... :banghead:

And difficult to see how anyone who has defended him thusfar can justify such a move...

They must have racked up a big bill putting it and the artwork together so far. Hope someone receives a bill for 'wasted time'.

He recently said he wanted to bury the hatchet and move on and so forth, so this move seems really counter to his aims anyway

Didn't Hooky get his wish for a standalone album release as well?

It's hard to believe that less than a month away from being released he could on a whim block it from coming out, people have probably already pre-ordered it, I wonder what possible reason could he have for taking such an action, Fucking the fans over like this..:nono:

What a complete fucking knob Hook is.

It's like he waited for it to become available to pre order which people then did and then he decided to be a complete and utter cock..

He's fucking the fans over who put him in his nice house, not New Order.

Fucking child.

How do we know this is true?

Someone probably explained to him that it will still be possible for the tracks to end up on... gasp... THE INTERNET.

If he really is worried about getting the fans upset over petty BS (see his recent interviews) then this is probably not the best course of action.

JG is a reliable source. If he says it, there's a high chance it's true. But at the same time I was careful to start my post with "If this is true" :p

Let's face it, in the current climate of shitty inter-band relations it's not an entirely unlikely thing to happen; he did vow to "fuck them over" after all.

The next few days will probably reveal more, I reckon.

“It would be nice, from my point of view, to get rid of those tracks in the nicest possible way that would at last draw the line under the New Order split-up in 2006. It hasn’t felt clean in any way, to be honest. So I’m hoping the release of the last remaining material will make it a little cleaner.”

Yeah right..

I thought he seems to like touring the world playing JD songs? I thought he left NO? Leaving the band so suddenly, then saying to the press that he regrets how he handled the situation? Well, he has made his 'bed' so he must 'lie in it'.

By 'fucking New Order over' he seems to forget that in this case he was a member of New Order, so is in fact fucking himself over. Not to mention any costs incurred thus far will be coming out of their collective money. Brilliant move, that showed them.

I watched it. Talking about REM splitting up and comparing it to how New Order "split up"... for fuck's sake, he still, still thinks they split up and New Order are finished:rofl: Dear oh dear oh dear. He thinks New Order are no more:laugh: Fucking numpty

I'm actually starting to get frustrated that in every interview the interviewer just accepts what Hook says and doesn't state to him that New Order have not in fact split up and Hook simply left them:banghead:

You can never expect the likes of Jo Whiley to give a Paxman style grilling interview though i suppose. That's an idea, get Paxman to interview Hook, see how he gets out of that

Hello folks. My first post in years! Sorry for introducing myself on this thread but this latest saga has really pissed me off. I really hope this release does see "the light" soon.

The last time I checked I think it was no2 in Amazons vinyl chart so this proves there's a strong demand for new NO product. Does anyone remember what the Smashing Pumpkins did about 10 years ago with their Machina II album? Just a thought!

Yes it was free! Doubt New Order are going to do that, when Hooky stated WFTSC cost over 750,000 Pounds to make.

Yes it has been delayed till next year, I got a e-mail from a reliable source and he said it will be next year, it has to do with HOOKY.

Then there goes my Christmas present to myself...I suppose it'll be a late New Years present (hopefully) :banghead:

Not taking sides here, but Hook is right-repackaging in this day and age is outmoded. A stand-alone set would be better. Of course, as a huge fan with everything they've ever done, I'm in either way. Nice to hear they're even considering the project at all. Maybe there's hope...some day...maybe........Dreams never end. ;)
