Set list predictions

Not giving *too* much thought to order here, though I know Bernard likes to pace the set between up and down tempo tracks. But I definitely think there will be some new additions to the noughties set.

PS. Because they are charity gigs and Gillian has rejoined, I really think they will offer something special. Plus, there's no pretense of needing to promote Singles or Waiting For The Sirens' Call.

But seriously, I think you're being way too optimistic there, I can see 3 or maybe 4 new additions at best, but otherwise, I'd expect the bog standard greatest hits set.

I always wondered what happened to Confusion and In A Lonely Place after 1998 - they seemed to be completely erased from their performances, a pity.

As for Joy Division songs, I think Bernard's voice is not suitable for most of them, with the only exceptions of Heart and Soul and Atmosphere; those he delivered beautifully.

Yes, I'm over optimistic. But I think there were multiple factors that made the set list 'bog standard' the past decade:

1. Phil is naturally better suited to guitar
2. Bernard felt compelled to promote the new songs
3. Transposing certain old songs may have just sounded weird, or they couldn't be bothered to re-sequence stuff
4. Hooky probably pushed the JD stuff, so there had to be some sort of compromise, not leaving much room for vintage New Order tracks. (I know Hooky would tease the bassline to Age of Consent on occasion, and of course it would have been great had they played it.)

Most of the tracks I listed they've either played with Phil or Gillian since 1998, including Touched, EGG, Perfect Kiss, and Love Vigilantes. No one expected Tighten Up or Out of Control when Bad Lieutenant debuted them. Gillian's got to be back for a reason, so they might as well pull out a few tracks that she co-wrote, e.g. 1963 or Vanishing Point.

I predict a set of more electronic, less bass-heavy numbers. Stuff like "World", "Round & Round", and "Confusion" may very well come back.

I would not be suprised if some of the songs are retired forver.

Here's THE question ; where are they going to stand? Gillian left, Steve back, Bernard middle, Phil right in the ex-Hooky position and Tom at the back?

I wonder that as well! Is Phil gonna be doing keys and guitar? Will he and Gillian both play keys on songs like BM, TPK, and TF I am excited about there being lots of keyboards onstage!

I am hoping for a more Electro based set as well.

Yes, expect what Barney has been doing with Bad Lieu and the 2005-6 New Order, even more so. Play the hits and the newer stuff straight up vanilla style.

I really doubt they'd do Sink or Swim. They have to prove they are not Bad Lieutenant, and Steve didn't even play on the record.

I forgot Round & Round might well be an option. People underestimate Bernard's ability to handle variety. He seemed to demonstrate a real pleasure performing Your Silent Face and Love Vigilantes in 2005-2006, and he even got worked up a bit for The Perfect Kiss in the Glasgow DVD.

He also mentioned a fondness for EGG in an interview when discussing Total, saying in effect how EGG and Temptation meant more to him than Blue Monday in terms of creative growth.

Fully agree, it does also depend on how long they have known about the gigs on how many new songs they can add. I can't see the new bassist having to learn loads of new tracks to play, so it will be alot from the BL setlist.

I could live with NO playing a few JD songs (but by the time you got 8 JD songs a night it was really fcking annoying when huge swathes of NO's catalogue was being junked for JD material). But a Hookless NO playing JD - when Gillian didn't play on the JD material? I feel that's too far removed from NewOrder for much legitimacy. Nonetheless, I reckon we'll get another screamed rendition of "Love Love Will COME ON!!!!! Tear Us Apart! YES! AGAIN!"

Sigh.

Not to veer too far from the BL set, I would guess we'll see all the NO songs BL perform, as well as "Perfect Kiss", "Blue Monday", "Krafty", "Waiting", maybe "Ruined In A Day", "Confusion", "World", "Round & Round". It would be nice if "Out of Control" was replaced by "Everythings Gone Green" in a medly, but... who knows?

Well, maybe Sink or Swim is a stretch but I think Bernard really likes that song. Poisonous Intent would be an interesting choice, thou don't know if he would do it.

VP hasn't been played live in 22 long years. R+R not in 18 years. I can't see it likely they'll be played unless they can transfer the old files to new kit. I thought that a lot of kit was upgraded between 99 and 01 and thus, only some songs were ported over at the time?

I think it's more likely that we'll just see one or two unexpected tracks with the majority of the set being stuff played by BL or NO on the last tour.

It's a bit of a dream set list I admit, though with the exception of the Technique tracks and a few others, I tried to keep it realistic.

I can't see Bernard and co learning new songs - they'll probably drop some of the WFTSC-era songs (if any made it, e.g. Krafty), as Gillian probably won't know them, although they could always get Phil Cunningham to do those ones...

Yes, but hopes were not high for 1998 ; who would've thought that in those gigs they'd've debuted Guilty Partner, World In Motion, and the new True Faith, and brought back so many songs - Isolation (last seen 1980), Heart And Soul (1980), Run (1989), Paradise (1987)m Confusion (1987ish), In A Lonely Place !987ish), for example?

Well, they were supposed to have learnt new songs to play at the recent "Friends Of Mine" festival... Ended up with exactly the same setlist... :p

He did. He played on Running Out Of Luck, Poisonous Intent and Runaway. He also co-wrote Running Out Of Luck and Runaway. You can spot his drum "sound" a mile off on Poisonous Intent. But yes, the rest of the record had another drummer playing.

I really don't think that they will be playing any Bad Lieutenant songs. It's billed as a New Order gig. That's what people have paid to hear. I'd be very very surprised if they add even one Bad Lieutenant song to the setlist.

Personally, I'll be disappointed if EGG isn't dusted off and given an airing.

Cool, somewhere along the way when BL were doing press I missed that Steve did in fact contribute to the record.

I know it's safer to be skeptical about New Order and expect them to be lazy, but they are a five piece now and that enables them to do more. And a tasty medley with EGG reprised would be great.

Not necessarily an equal comparison, as most of NO have been working together as BL : but, on the other hand, a key personality is now absent, and thus, an opportunity for the remaining members to do something slightly different.

Have you all forgotten what a great song Run is? They could easily play it now that they have the extra musician onstage and as it's mainly a guitar based song there would be no need for any major programming etc. I would much prefer that to Round & Round for instance.

I'll second that!! Love to hear FINE TIME Again. When they played it at MEN Arena in 1998 a couple of days before New Years Eve,it was excellent!
