Peter Hook and The Light in NYC Tonight.

Saw Hooky and the Light courtesy of Jack tonight.

Was in the front row, right between Hooky and Jack, with my black and white striped shirt and my silly haircut.

Show was brilliant.

Hooky wasn't happy in New Order at the end...

But it is plain to see from seeing him perform in NYC tonight that he is very happy playing with The Light, and given that he is a sentimental and emotional fellow, he clearly enjoys singing and playing these JD songs. He wasn't trying to be Ian Curtis, he was being Peter Hook, the same self depreciating, humorous Hooky we've come to know and love over the years. When he wasn't playing bass or singing (and his singing sounded fantastic) he was doing his little Hooky dance and striking what I affectionately call his Male Model Poses. He was awesome!

The Light sounded fantastic. Seriously. This is not just a tribute band. These guys have really worked hard to study and recreate the JD songs, and they sounded tight and fucking loud and good. Jack did a really admirable job playing Hooky's parts when Hooky was singing, and the drummer was really, really good, really tight and note perfect. The Light have become a really good live unit. I was impressed. Would love to hear some original songs from them!

I brought my girlfriend with me. She isn't really familiar with Joy Division or New Order, and knows them mainly through me....she was blown away and had a fantastic time. She said, "Hooky reminds me of a Viking!". I explained to her that The Viking is Hooky's nickname and that in the UK there are a tribe of New Order fans called The Vikings. She was really impressed by the Hooky and the Light and wants to learn more about JD now.

The show was originally at Irving Plaza, but was moved to the Gramercy Theater, which is about four times the size of Irving Plaza. The show was packed! Bout half of the crowd were late 30's or 40's...but the other half were clearly early 20's and college kids. Everyone was into it.

Setlist was the standard Closer setlist, encore included These Days (which was a great surprise!) as well as Ice Age, Atmosphere, Transmission, and LWTUA.

A few notable things....

During Atmosphere, Hooky stopped the song because a fight between two idiots broke out in the crowd. He stopped the show until the fight was broken up. He actually said something to the effect of "The two Barney fuckers out there, stop fighting!". One of them had a Barney cut!

At one point in the show, during the encore, Jack's bass guitar strap broke in the middle of the song, and at the end of the song, Hooky said: "You'll never get a job in New Order if you play like that!" which drew a big laugh from the crowd. He then said, "I've had a hell of a week, but nothing like what you guys have gone thru here." I wonder if that was a reference to the 10th anniversary of 9-11 (it was a very moving day)? Anyways, that was the only New Order comment he made, it was funny and in good humor.

Last song of the night was a special extended version of LWTUA. It was extended because in the middle of the song, while rocking out on his bass, Hooky tripped and fell flat on his back! The band vamped a bit and slowed down and he improvised the third verse, and then the song went out with the usual big finish. Hooky then made a funny, self depreciating comment about his fall ending up on Youtube, and show was over.

Oh, then a fellow from the crowd jumps onstage, grabs the mic, and starts singing:

"LOUIE LOUIE! OH NO! WE GOTTA GO!" And those of us who knew who Jon the Postman was sang right along.

All in all, a fucking fantastic night with Hooky and the Light.

I'll say this...

It's clear to me that Hooky is really enjoying playing with the Light, and the Light have become a seriously good, tight band.

Let Hooky do what makes him happy. If the other members of NO want to carry on, then let them. Let everyone play the songs with whom they wish and be fucking happy.

People may disagree, but after tonight's show, it's obvious to me that Hooky isn't cashing in, he was so happy playing up there...

And the Light were great. I will never say another bad word about them.

To be honest, I actually thought he phoned it in.

I was there for Unknown Pleasures, which was absolutely amazing! This time around, he touched his bass on maybe three songs max. What was that all about? I understand he has to sing, but during Unknown Pleasures, he always joined his son for the intros and immediately after the verses on every song to lay down a couple of the riffs. His bass was more of a prop/accessory tonight.

I agree with everything Zachery said, I had a blast and was shocked how good they sounded, I will put some pics up later also, who ever goes to this show will have so much fun.

I also thought they were a powerful live act when I saw them during the summer doing UP, it would be interesting to see if any of the people who are against about what The Light are doing would change their minds after seeing the band.. On the other hand the detractors are against what he is doing on principle and I guess you could admit that they put on a good show but still have reservations about the whole concept.

Last night I had a great time at the show, Some guy who use to manage NO in America introduced the band before they came on. The set list was amazing and they sounded great live, my favorites were Isolation, Heart & soul and Decades, during Atmosphere some guy in front of me started a fight because he was messing with his girl so Hooky stopped the show till everything cleared out and then started Atmosphere again. After the show I was Lucky enough to go backstage and meet Peter Hook and took some pictures and got some autographs.

Great write-up of the show! It was fantastic! I was in the front also - on the left side in front of Jack- Band sounded really tight- I saw the Unknown Pleasures show back in December - which set the bar really high, but they out did themselves last night. Hearing "These Days", "Ice Age", and "Isolation" was just incredible- Never thought I would have the chance to hear those songs live. Jack sounded terrific and Hooky's voice was fantastic! Thank you! :)
