Peter Hook Steps Into the Light

BRILLSON: I'm sure you've gotten lots of questions about this in the last week, but if you had been asked, would you have joined the tour?

HOOK: I think I would have. If they'd have asked. We all have proven over the years that it is greater to be together than it is to be apart. The hateful thing is that you sort of need each other and it drives you crazy, but it's true. I think if they had asked me to do it, I would have. If they had come to me and said we don't want you included, I still would have let them tour. But they did it without telling me. We've done some dealings, shall we say, to allow them to go out as New Order, which are very, very distasteful.

you have to realize that now there is no money in recording and selling records, so live is very important. It struck me the other day that maybe one of the reasons that the boys have decided, in their infinite wisdom, to play without me is because they need the name to play live to earn money... because as Bad Lieutenant they weren't earning that much money.

I understand it's difficult to make money on CDs/recorded material alone, but to say there's 'no' money in it, is rather an exaggeration don't you think? For example, a lot of bands/artists record an album and then tour that for a while. It's nice to have something recorded in a studio to listen to at home and such, by an artist, you know?

I don't know any of the members personally. But I would think the members of BL knew that the BL name wouldn't 'sell' as well as New Order, financially. They probably knew that, yet they still made an album and toured that. They also supported PSB on a few gigs. But they didn't constantly talk about making money or such in their interviews. They may have realised a lot of their income will probably come from touring, but they also took the effort to record stuff in the studio and release it (Never Cry Another Tear). If it's difficult to go to gigs for whatever reason (money, distance etc) then the next best option to support the artists you love is to buy the recorded material.

In (Sumner's band) Bad Lieutenant, they played New Order, which always made me wonder why they harped about me doing Joy Division. Yet they always say, "Oh, you shouldn't be playing with Joy Division," but they were doing it before me. In Bad Lieutenant, they played New Order and played bass on the keyboard.

They only played some New Order/Electronic and other songs along the newer ones they recorded as BL. Hooky is doing entire JD albums. Not the same situation. And Tom Chapman toured with them and played bass on stage.

. I'm not playing a Joy Division set—you're playing the album start to finish. I can't get my head around just being a tribute band.

If all of the songs you play are Joy Division, then it's a Joy Division set, even if you are playing the songs in the order as the album.

Interesting bit about the recording of "Here To Stay." Nice to see Hooky says Gillian deserves a medal for putting up with them all those years!

Is it just me, or does every single Hooky interview mention (a lack of) money?

I wouldn't be at all surprised if that was the one of the contributory factors for the split... :\ohwell:

agreed. god knows how she put up with barneys and hookys antics over the years. must be enough to test the patience of a saint!

Watched the Academy 87 video of The Perfect Kiss this morning. At the end of his guitar solo Bernard just looks toward Gillian and Steve, cold stare, but basking in the sampled moans at the song's climax.

HOOK: No, I'm very emotional. I'm very melancholic. Bernard used to go to great lengths to tell me, "You're obsessed with the past, you love it too much, you need to get rid of it." But I'm very proud of it. I remember doing San Francisco and there was a guy waiting outside and he came up to me and said, [Peter switches to an American accent] "I've been waiting 35 years for you to do this!" And he showed me his ticket, and it was a Joy Division ticket. When we went to Italy, there were four girls in the front row and they were all crying. I'm very close to Joy Division, but even I don't understand the power and effect it has on people. I don't get to enjoy it like that.

The New Order book is gonna be great if he writes it like he's been answering some questions lately; really different from past interviews.
