After the success of his 2010 Unknown Pleasures 30th Anniversary Tour, Joy Division bassist, PETER HOOK, will return to Australia in 2012 with his band THE LIGHT, to play the classic album CLOSER, in full, sequentially and in track order, with shows in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide. The tour is a celebration of the legacy of the music of Joy Division who have become one of the most revered bands in musical history and their influence remains strong with many bands and fans world.

Although the band was to last only three and a half years with the tragic suicide of Joy Division lead singer, Ian Curtis in May 1980, the Martin Hannett produced seminal second and final album “CLOSER” was released two months later, becoming an instant classic across critics and fans.

The release of CLOSER came as a bitter-sweet comfort to fans around the world who, while mourning Curtis’ loss, were also celebrating the creation of what has been referred to as Joy Divisions’ finest work. "Closer is even more austere, more claustrophobic, more inventive, more beautiful, and more haunting than its predecessor. It's also Joy Division's start-to-finish masterpiece, a flawless encapsulation of everything the group sought to achieve. 10 / 10." (Pitchfork Media)

Spawning the landmark tracks ‘Isolation’ and ‘Heart And Soul’, the album reached #6 on the UK Albums Chart at the time of its release, and claimed the #1 slot on NME Album of the Year. Since then, CLOSER has received numerous accolades: it was ranked #10 on Pitchfork Media's Top 100 Albums of the 1980s, #72 on NME's 100 Greatest British Albums Ever and in 2006 was ranked #8 in Q Magazine’s list of 40 Best Albums of the '80s.

Peter Hook is a founding member two of the most significant bands in popular musical history – Joy Division and New Order – and a legend in his own right. His 2010 Australian ‘Unknown Pleasures’ tour was a huge success with sell-out shows at Melbourne’s Palais Theatre, and the Enmore in Sydney. Hooky and the music of Joy Division was received with open arms by grateful fans who, 30 years on, still hold this phenomenal contribution to musical history close to their hearts.

A stunning beautiful and emotive work, CLOSER remains as relevant now as it was on its release. Don’t miss your chance to witness this epic Joy Division experience, live.

Jack are you gonna get to Perth?

May go to Sydney otherwise.

Nice touch coming to little old Adelaide again, we usually get shafted. Pity I'll be OS - coming to Canada?

One of my musical highlights in life was meeting Hooky out the back of the theatre after the Unknown Pleasures gig and getting a pic and LWTUA signed - but I must admit, the paid meet and greet ain't my cup of tea...

There's a chance Perth will be added later but I can't guarantee it I'm afraid.

And to be fair loads of bands do these meet & greet things now, and people like it. At the end of the day nobody is forcing anyone to buy one, and if nobody does then so be it. But the option is there for people who would like to do it, so kindly jog on Burt, absolutely sick of you to be honest.

Fair enough Jack but surely it takes away any spontaneous 'meet & greet' opportunities which may (or may not - that's part of the fun of being a fan) have happened otherwise?

One thing that I'm not entirely comfortable with is that in the face of any criticism or dissent on this, the party line is "Don't buy it and jog on."

That unfortunately is standard fayre from the Hook camp. Must be tired of criticism in a fans forum. :nonono:

Well perhaps we will find out how many subscribe to said VIP package. Wasn't there a highly eccentric and somewhat obsessive lass called Margaret on these boards a few years back from Oz? Hopefully she's loaded.

I'm sure if people hang around in the right places then there is still a chance that a meet could happen off the cuff . . . but if people want to guarantee it by buying a package then that is their decision. :)

Well these rock stars need to go to school more, rather than heavily indulging themselves in the short term riches of nepotism.

Personally, i see this as a board for debate, not free plastic advertising, especially at $300 a throw. But as Jack said, with a load of pointed stuff attached, you can vote with yer wallet. So do it Margaret xx

You've taken it a bit out of context Liam, I think what Hooky is trying to say is criticism is OK but not when it comes from Burt.

Is the following OK?

If 50 people subscribe to this, Hooky would need to do a constant 4 hours before each show simply for everyone to get 5 minutes worth. How long is the meet and greet?

Aside from a T shirt ($20?) the difference between Platinum and Gold is 5 items signed and not 5 signed items, then he is charging $30 for five signatures. Does this mean he won't sign anything unless theres some dosh in it, cause i'd be a tad annoyed paying through the nose for something given away free elsewhere.

Besides..If I was in Hooky shoes I am wouldn't want to meet the type of fan that would be willing to pay $300 to meet me..

I think they've limited it to ten per show (it says in there somewhere).

One thing I did notice is that a normal 'no frills' ticket is $79 (just over 50 quid in UK money). A quick scan of other gigs suggest these sort of premium prices are not unusual in Oz, and it appears that a lot of bands charge a lot in the Antipodes. Any reason other than its so far away?

Pretty pricy here due mainly to distance travelled but also the relatively strong dollar ATM which doesn't help international acts - it's proving almost impossible to run a festival too with the Big Day Out being severely cut back in some states.

As a comparison of value for money to Hooky's show these are three noice gigs in town this week:

Portishead + Mercury Rev (can't wait!) $90 Flaming Lips $84 The National + The Walkmen $67

What entails in a Meet n Greet? Is it exactly that: "Hi"... "Hello"... "Are you gonna reform with NO?"... "maybe, but probably not"... Shake hands, now find your seat...

Might be worth the money if it was to be part of the after-party or pre-party or whatever, but if its a regular line for signing and shaking hands, $300 is outrageous...

If you look at the first post, it's not just a shake hands for that much money thing. That said I'm not really interested in these types of things.

Indeed it isn't, you don't have to queue - a blessed relief saving yourself a couple of minutes.

You also get a laminated pass though I doubt it will have access all areas on it.

Has there ever been a conversation in the PH/Light camp along the lines of "some people really might not like this"?

Gonna pass on this, would've considered it especially as it will be in Melbourne around the time of my 40th. However, the 'pay for meet + greet' is just one step too far; I don't care how many other bands do this, it's a greedy, shit idea that is far removed from what JD were all about.

I've never heard of any foreign bands that come here to play and do a paid meet and greet...maybe this is more common in other countries such as Australia etc?

This is where I am.

What's worse is the attitude of "if you don't like it, don't buy it and shut up / jog on."

JD/NO means/meant something to us - and this ain't it.

To he honest, a load of bands that I like myself have done this sort of thing before for gigs that I have wanted to go to, and every time I thought "that sucks", but that doesn't mean to say that I don't think people should be given the opportunity to do it if it's on offer and they want to. I didn't even know about it until I posted the press release on here... Just because a lot of people don't agree with it doesn't mean that other people won't do it and enjoy it. But the bottom line is that nobody has to buy a regular ticket for any show they don't want to go to, nevermind a more expensive "package" or whatever you want to call it. Some people will go for it, some people won't, different strokes for different folks, and thats fair enough.

And to clarify, the only reason I responded like that earlier in the thread was because I'm sick to the back teeth of sniping criticism from the same one guy who has absolutely no intention of ever going to any shows, let alone ones in Australia (which begs the question has he nothing better to do than post in here?), and is just doing it simply to act like a child in order to wind people up. And for me the sad thing about it all is that by responding like that I guess he wins.

FWIW I also don't agree with queue jumping priority tickets at places like Alton Towers.

The rich cunts can queue up with the rest of us. Maybe it's a Salford thing...

Bullshit. I've always said i will see the Light again, if they get round to doing NO albums. Mind you this astonishing money-grabbing attitude is beginning to lessen any enthusiasm I have for such an idea. The same for Freebass, who I have to say were a disappointment in London. Having spent a lot of cash over twenty five years pursuing NO, there are times when you wonder why do I bother. I will certainly bother with NO Ltd, as at least they appear to be doing it all with relative decorum and a dignified silence. If Barney was offering a meet n greet and putting up on here, I would be straight in there, lambasting it. The last time I met Peter it cost me a few chips in the Wimpy at Brixton, not $300.

As I've said before this is a fans forum, and people are entitled to criticise as well as praise. If you can't take the heat, etc. As the thread has borne out, I'm not a lonely voice out there, and find it amusing that I have to be singled out for something I'm sure many were thinking. So jog on, lad.

You are more like a forum bully, you mainly criticize Peter Hook and the Light. As others have posted in this thread, a lot of bands are doing this now, because the promoters are offering these packages. This particular Australian promoter has been doing it for over a year. It's part of the deal.

It may be the difference between a band touring Australia, or not, as the costs of getting everyone here and equipment, from the other side of the World, are insane.

As someone born in 1987, I don't know which generation I would be in. I do pay for CDs and such if I find it worthwhile, and I'm sure there's lots of young people around the world that would and do pay for the music they truly love (whether by buying the music, or going to their gigs if possible). And I thought bands back in the 1990s, 1980s and 1970s and before, made most of their money from touring and not just from album sales in itself. It may be even more like that these days, but I doubt most of the money in the 'music industry' back in those days mostly came from record sales alone---touring was and still is a major factor in money. I'm not personally criticising those who wish to go (whether just the gig or even the meet-and -greet).

Sorry for being a bit off topic.

Actually I've seen it change drastically, most young people I know (I'm gen of '73, they're some 10 years younger) don't buy music from bands they say casually like, usually they don't buy even music from their fayourite bandy anymore, they just wait for torrents to appear. But they still like to see live music. The thing is, behaviour such as paid meet&greets will only put them off music in the long run.

With regards to the second point though, Hooky's a brave man agreeing to meet the sort of fans who are prepared to fork out extra cash to engage him. It's already been covered here, but 'Misery' does indeed spring to mind. :eek3:

That's totally ridiculous meet & greets will put people off going to gigs. It's a part of the ticketing formula. When you got to a gig, you buy a ticket you can afford, or are comfortable with. There have been different levels of ticket prices for a long time now.

Evidently not, as I stated earlier, it was a deciding factor for me to not bother in this instance. I don't suppose my opinion is commonly held one, but it certainly isn't 'totally ridiculous'.

What I find odd is the excuse that this is totally beyond Hooky's control. I'm pretty certain Hooky could've declined participating in this 'meet & greet ticketing option' if he objected, but I suspect the potential for added profit was attractive.

What do you think Rob would've made of this?

It's not gonna put people off, is it? I just find it bizarre - I've never seen it over here before, so don't agree it's part of any ticketing formula. This must surely just be an Australian thing?

I'm gonna ring up New Order and ask if I can sit on stage with them at the Troxy, if I pay them a little extra cash.

Don't try and claim that this Meet & Greet is a normal or accepted aspect of live performances nowadays, I have never come across the likes of it before and am not the only one, it maybe that they need to do this to help finance the tour but it looks like a very cynical way of extracting more cash from punters and I feel that the whole meet & greet thing would be an uncomfortable experience for Hooky aswell as for the gullible fools who hand out the cash to attend it,for example if you pay $249 he doesn't sign anything but if you pay $300 he signs 5 items? Everybody who turns up regardless of which ticket they buy will expect items to be signed and I would not like to the person who who has the job of telling the punter who has paid 249 bucks and has her/his records, cds etc with her that they are not going to be signed because she has not got the platinum ticket...

I don't really care, but what you are saying is, because there is a meet and great package as part of the different ticket prices (which I don't have any control over) that you wont go to the show?

I'm neither here or there for it. It's not just an Australian thing, a lot of other promoters/etc are doing it around the World, and yes it does cause a division within the fans.

You're right. I've just googled it for UK gigs and the likes of JLS, Rihanna, Westlife and N-Dubz all indeed seem to have/had some sort of 'Meet and Greet' ticket option available.

Not sure 'Joy Division' fit comfortably in with that group but still.. .

What I'm saying is this shameless money-grubbing is a step too far from a former member of a band once known for their principles. He doesn't have to do it, he chooses to, and that is very disappointing to me.

I don't hold you personally responsible, nor do I give a stuff how much you care. However, as Hooky and the Light choose to engage in this sort of discourse, he can make his own excuses, so you need not bother.

Look at the line-up The Light are mixing with there. Can we expect to see them on The X-Factor any time soon?

Having thought about it Im quite surprised this was posted on here at all. Even a casual reader would be able to pick up on the undercurrent of ill-feeling towards some members of New Order, whichever "side" decided to do something like this was always going to get pages of criticism.

Im surprised Jack felt the need to get involved, it was never going to get a universal:thumb:

The only other band I know of from the UK who offers a "VIP package" for an inflated price is James which considering their well documented social political standing is a tad ironic. I saw them twice and paid for a normal standing ticket each time.

Personally, I wouldn't pay for it. Not my bag. If you happen to be backstage with the band because you've done some work for them then that's a different kettle of fish. I would never pay 150-200 quid for the pleasure though and to say it's the norm these days is probably taking it a bit far. At least not from the bands I like and follow.

If the "new" New Order offered it I wouldn't buy it either.

NotAMod wrote: If the "new" New Order offered it I wouldn't buy it either.

Could be the fallback option if/when all 'normal' tickets sell out at gigs though.

I doubt anyone would rush to get a VIP package ... but if that's all that's left 15mins after tickets go on sale then who's to say?

Not the sort of things touts would generally buy either, I should't imagine?

Well, if it was me and I had a choice between seeing New Order for 150 quid or not seeing them at all then I'd probably go with the latter. Got to draw the line somewhere. They're not Beyonce or Elton John (thankfully) The touts probably wouldn't buy up the VIP option because it might require submitting personalised details which couldn't be sold on? Imagine paying a tout for a laminate pass with "A. Tout" printed on it instead of your own name? Ouch.

To be fair, the only thing that does attract me to the notion of a "VIP package" is access to the sound check. It was the only thing James offered which piqued my interest. That's a fairly cool thing to watch. As for meeting the band, er what would you talk about? Beyond "I like your records"? I wouldn't want to be Hooky when the real JD obsessives turn up wanting to know what colour of socks Ian wore in the LWTUA video.

Still, each to their own eh.

We had a cracking lock in with Hooky a few years back up in Glasgow after he did a DJ set at Grahame's bar, must have lasted a good couple of hours. Twas a fookin great craic, Hooky had us in tears with some of the stories. Everyone who was there loved it. Unfortunately as we were all a bit worse for wear, we cannae mind half of the stuff we talked about. Definitely something i cherish, I just wouldnae do the meet and greet thing.....mainly cos I'm always skint :D

Me too. After a gig I just want to go home, its bound to be after my bedtime.

Also, it does no good to let musicians start thinking they're something special. Paying for the 'honour' of meeting them? Bound to inflate the ego.

When I met Paul Banks we had a chat about Alex storming into the dressing room in Zurich and our favourite types of cake.

Just remembered that took place four years ago today. Wierd. Fucking cold in Munich.

I wouldn't be so quick to judge. As someone pointed out there's a good chance that this has been suggested by the promoter as a means of generating more $$$ to make the shows viable. There's a big outlay for the promoter in Oz to make this happen and all the risk is on him. The band will walk away with their fee whether 2 people show up to each gig or 200. if this is the type of thing that enables the shows to happen then fair play. Bands have done meet-and-greets for years, generally with competition winners granted but it's not something new or uncomfortable for them. I still remember the Manc Evening News in '98 having a photo of New Order on Page 3 'with competition winners' the day after the 'Temptation' gig.

@Al, that was a grand of Diageo's money, by way of 'sponsorship'. And even if it had come out my own back pocket it would have been worth it! 7 years ago though....fuckin' hell.....

The rules of engagement between an indie band and their cult like fan base (yes, I said cult) are different to that of your more typical pop act with their more excitable and youthful devotees.

I wonder if this lies at the root of the contention around Hook's latest income opportunity? Indie bands have to be a touch more careful about what they can and can't do, as image and perception in the eyes of their touchy die-hards are all important.

To understand the true impact of this decision we have to consider how many folk this would put off going to see The Light, not just on thus tour but ever, as well as how many packages are sold. Of course we'll never know the answer to first part of that. Depending on where you stand with this, should the tour have been declined if this additional feature was a deal maker for the promoter?

Why thanks JG. That's another pint owed I guess.

To agree with your earlier point, I've been a proud fan of the coolest band on the planet for 25 years. That 'cool-ness' has been much to do with the aura they created and the large number of 'fuck-you's' they handed out to 'pop-culture', and the refusal to chase money over gaining critical success. I will be equally damning if New Order Ltd dare to cross that divide.

Good to hear Hooky & co are coming next year - welcome back! Look forward to seeing you guys again.

Btw I first came across those 'meet-and-greet' thingy last year when Gary Numan toured Oz ...I did scoffed at those stuffs initially after learning how much they cost eventhough I was a Numanoid myself waay baaack. To my surprise, those 'meet-n-greet' packages got sold out pretty fast, i think only 10 was offered to die-hard numanoids...mind you, the package did include an exclusive DVD of the concert not available to public in addition to all the usual meet, chat, signing, etc...

I def prefer those 'meet-and-greet'offered by bands such as Bloc party and Interpol where Kele & Co or Paul Banks or Carlos D would turn up at your local club with fans after the gig for a 'meet-and-get-drunk' together....

:D good times...:thumb:

I’m so fucking sick and tried of reading about the same old shit on here when it comes to Hooky. What, musicians aren’t allowed to make money anymore? I know, God forbid that they turn a profit. God forbid they offer a meet and greet! Holyshit, a meet and greet, all is not right now in the New Order/Joy Division world.

Come this is New Order Online………a meet and greet! That should be worth about 10 pages of Hooky bashing. New Order Online, the place where the universe stops and all the Hooky-Haters come to talk shit about Peter Hook. A place for people with special needs, like Burt! Special needs for a special lad. A lad who takes his Hooky bashing very serious! Very serious indeed. Congrats Burt, you have achieved something very, very special on this forum. You have shown you will not stand for a meet and greet. I commend you Burt, for being that very special (short bus wearing a helmet and knee pads kind of special) lad we all knew you were. As I said in another thread elsewhere, I will be doing one of his shows next year, as I did last year. Can't wait for the 'meet-n-greet'  . And a reminder once again this is Neworderonline, the place where such suggestions are ridiculed on a regular basis. Fortunately New order themselves didn't offer a 'meet-n-greet' package on Saturday night, or I'm sure they would have been in for the same treatment by many many people.

hooky has every right to make money but if he wants to go down the tribute band road he has to accept the ridicule of being in a tribute band. from a musicians point of view if the thought of never playing my own songs or writing new music came into my head id hang up the guitar with dignity intact.

Hooky rightly said in some interview years ago that the different between new order and the other bands was that they had class, without that they would have been lumped in with all those shitty electronic bands who came out of the 80s of whom most of them are doing nostalgia tours as we speak. its hard to say even now after all thats been said that hooky has more in common with the revival tours than punk electronic music but there you go.

It was the irony of you suggesting I was a 'special needs' case.

Lots of people are learning to reluctantly let go, and none of us get a lot of pleasure out of it either. There is life after Joy Division lad. It's just on another thread, and just like in 1979 doesn't involve 'meet-n-greets', or Union Jack T shirts.

As i said.. well done for bringing this up again a month later. Hooky will be delighted that his 'special friend' has brought on a wave of negative comments that will no doubt follow.

Just as an aside, I understand that Hooky donated a sizeable amount of money to the reorder nominated charity over the weekend, and hats off to him for that.

The thing about New order online is that actually records the date when these things were posted. November should have been a clue. But good of you to bring it up again. Keep it rolling through to the actual tour dates if you like.
