Just wanna know your opinion about this. Why the hell have New Order stopped to play Technique songs live since 1998?

they remind them of heavy drinking and drug abuse? I'm sure there're not many happy memories when they remember those songs.

Boredom? Or have the tapes with the music on them got lost which would thus require them to remember how to play them?

I see no reason why they aren't touching them to be honest, Technique is in my opinion their finest hour, not one duff track on the album.

Bernard can hit the notes fine as he was singing more in his natural register at this point and there aren't really any hard high notes to hit.

Haven't a clue!

I think I moaned about this the last time NO were on tour. The response I got on here at the time was that Bernard didnt think the songs came across very well live. Also most of the songs are documenting the breakdown in a relationship aren't they? Perhaps Bernard doesnt want to relive that. Mind you as an artist he should. The more personal the lyrics, the more they tend to connect with an audience. It would indeed be nice to have Technique represented to some degree. Vanishing Point could be awesome live if the band were prepared to work on it. And Fine Time, slight song though it is, usually got the crowd chanting along to the spoken word parts back when they played it. So yeah I guess we could start trying to demand it for when they return again "without Freddie Mercury", but whether that will do any good...

Surely the more important and pressing question is why they never do The Ostrich live anymore

Guilty Partner, though they only played it twice, never worked well live.

Run at the Apollo was smooth and grand.

Fine Time always knocked the stuffing out of the gig and went down a storm. No idea why they don't play songs from it - we all know that if they opened with the long version of Round & Round, and played Vanishing Point / Mr Disco / Fine Time at the end, we'd all need to buy new trousers after having wet ourselves.

I thought they said it didn't sound right live. Even thow I thought Round and round, Guilty Partner and Fine time sounded great.

Hey Jim!

If I meet you around Glasgow wearing a Ranger's t-shirt, I would shake your hand and call you Shug. Twin brothers indeed

They dropped them because they're completely out of touch with their fanbase and just want to play True Faith, Temptation, Bizarre Love Triangle, and Blue Monday OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER AGAIN!

Agreed but we all want MOVEMENT

They have their set list set in stone now, no room for anything from technique.

That's the most important question!!!

Discussed here: earlier thread

As Debaser touched upon, lyrics on many of the songs presumabley chronicled Barneys relationship with Sue. He would probably prefer not to put effort (Barney, lazy?) into reworking songs centered on that subject.

Fine Time survived in the set for a few years as that isn't exactly a tearjerker but I can't imagine Mr. Disco (always superb live) tugs at his heartstrings either.

The band needs to be asked point blank so we can end the speculation. While many champion the Movement days, they're outnumbered by those longing for some love technique.

as if all their other songs were written and performed sober?

and i would think ceremony and temptation were from even darker days, and when they were drinking heavy and doing speed and lsd. couldn't have been a fun time in the early 80s after Curtis died, yet they play quite a few of those songs, including joy division.

I think it's the only album where Sumner was really sincere about what he was singing, i.e. finally bringing meaning to his otherwise usual nonsense. Despite the gaiety of the music, the lyrics may be too introspective to sing them off the stage, especially 22 years later.

I know they played them live in '89 but Sumner seemed to regret it afterwards, dismissing them as "tracks bad live"...

And everyone said Lovejuice was crap, well there is no word to define The Ostrich!

I reckon it's for no particular reason at all... It's all just an unhappy coincidence. Perhaps on the rare occasions they've been looking to add new songs to the setlist, they've just casually overlooked it, maybe because of the lack of big hits on there (they seem to have been enjoying playing 'greatest hits' setlists for a while now).

It's mainly because there is a lot of reprogramming and resourcing of sounds involved in getting most of them back into play.

You made reference to its singles, nah?

It was a top ten album in the UK charts, probably their most successful

Probably hard to replicate live that smooth produced sound of the album.maybe they tried in rehearsals and they just sounded poor.

Nearly all of New Order's albums were top 10 over here. I think perhaps only Movement wasn't?

Technique was actually no.1

Then again, so was Republic - perhaps they should play more off that than just Regret?

There's not enough room on the autocue's memory for Technique's lyrics

Simples.

You are correct. In one of the interviews between songs on the Live in Glasgow DVD, Bernard states that they stopped playing songs from Technique because they didn't work well live.

And one could argue this is one of the main reasons Hooky left.

They could actually play much more material if they were willing to play for 2 hours instead of just one. A number of other bands do, and their catalogue is by no means lacking.

if we got hooky to say in an interview that bernard hates playing songs from technique it might have the required effect on getting them played.

Steve Morris mentions this in the current MOJO interview. He says the band should address the matter (or words to that effect).

More songs, and more variety please. I like that the band do mix up setlists over time, and only 5-6 songs have remained as standards ("Temptation", "Bloo Mondae", "Toothache", "Bacon Lettuce Tomato", "Regret", "Ceremony" and "LWTUA" are the only ones they have played at every set of dates since 98). But would it hurt them to bring back "Touched", "Paradise", "Isolation", "60MPH", "Close Range", "Ruined In A Day" and maybe, sometimes, open with "Temptation" or "Blue Monday" for a change?

Probably Bernard forgot that he has an album named Technique. Oh Bernard, why are you such a lame ass. Can't you just rock out. Remember you' re in the rock n roll industry. Get out there and ......oh it's fruitless. And for those that don't like what I have to say, I give you a big Morrissey who cares( eff, eff, eff). Cheers, John

If Bernard couldn't remember the album title all the way back in 89, doubt the autocue would save him now :\ohwell: All_The_WayBS: "This is er, All The Way, off, eh, our last album, which is called..."PH: "(laughs) Technique, Barn"BS: "Technique, yeah, thank you."PH: "See, what a fuckin' double act!"

In all seriousness though I'd love to see them give these tunes another go. Imagine a newer fine time? That'd actually be interesting to see, would be a great replacement for TPK or BLT on different nights.

Hey dumb asses, I'm quite aware of the creation and purpose of New Order(napkin thing). However, you still have to try reeeeeeeaaal hard at it and take nothing for granted. Bernard seems to have forgotten that among many other things. Douche.

Nope still not getting it. You seem to have mistaken NO for Bon Jovi or summat.

See, you don't know the purpose, what kind of Brit are you? I will not do all the hard work for you. Must I carry your jock like Hooky has done all these years. Think about it, if Hooky wasn't on that stage showing how much he loves playing those tunes live then we would be forced to watched Bernaaaaaaard looking all woe is me bored. It would be like watching itunes for christ sake. Don't even try to be the contrary, cuz it cannot be done in this context.

Bernard stopped just looking at the floor back in the mid 80's, pretty much when he started taking shit loads of E and couldn't stand still if he had concrete boots on. I think in the early days when Bernard wasn't a confident singer he was happy for hooky to be the main presence on the stage, but as his confidence grew he wanted to be noticed, quite rightly as the singer in the band, this is probably one of the many problems between the two.

Some of our less intellectually blessed American members do love mangling the English language to death, don't they?

Because Barney has his personality back that he had before 1988. He cannot relate anymore to the person he was in the Technique-period.

What's stopping them from doing Fine Time or Round and Round live? If it's too difficult may be they could get the Chemical Brothers to guest in and do the tekkie bits. Would be awesome.

I'd love to see them do a non-single track like MR DISCO or DREAM ATTACK

The only valid reason, though the conspiracists will no doubt continue to look for more. I get the impression that they've given Stuart Price some kind of green light to do some reprogramming, as with 586. You never know what might be possible. (provided it's not in D and was written by Barney, anyway)
