Why did New Order drop TECHNIQUE songs live?

Just wanna know your opinion about this. Why the hell have New Order stopped to play Technique songs live since 1998?

Boredom? Or have the tapes with the music on them got lost which would thus require them to remember how to play them?

I see no reason why they aren't touching them to be honest, Technique is in my opinion their finest hour, not one duff track on the album.

Bernard can hit the notes fine as he was singing more in his natural register at this point and there aren't really any hard high notes to hit.

I think I moaned about this the last time NO were on tour. The response I got on here at the time was that Bernard didnt think the songs came across very well live. Also most of the songs are documenting the breakdown in a relationship aren't they? Perhaps Bernard doesnt want to relive that. Mind you as an artist he should. The more personal the lyrics, the more they tend to connect with an audience. It would indeed be nice to have Technique represented to some degree. Vanishing Point could be awesome live if the band were prepared to work on it. And Fine Time,slight song though it is, usually got the crowd chanting along to the spoken word parts back when they played it. So yeah I guess we could start trying to demand it for when they return again "without Freddie Mercury", but whether that will do any good...

Guilty Partner, though they only played it twice, never worked well live.

Run at the Apollo was smooth and grand.

Fine Time always knocked the stuffing out of the gig and went down a storm. No idea why they don't play songs from it - we all know that if they opened with the long version of Round & Round, and played Vanishing Point / Mr Disco / Fine Time at the end, we'd all need to buy new trousers after having wet ourselves.

I thought they said it didn't sound right live. Even thow I thought Round and round, Guilty Partner and Fine time sounded great.

They have their set list set in stone now, no room for anything from technique.

As Debaser touched upon, lyrics on many of the songs presumabley chronicled Barneys relationship with Sue. He would probably prefer not to put effort (Barney, lazy?) into reworking songs centered on that subject.

Fine Time survived in the set for a few years as that isn't exactly a tearjerker but I can't imagine Mr. Disco (always superb live) tugs at his heartstrings either.

The band needs to be asked point blank so we can end the speculation. While many champion the Movement days, they're outnumbered by those longing for some love technique.

and i would think ceremony and temptation were from even darker days, and when they were drinking heavy and doing speed and lsd. couldn't have been a fun time in the early 80s after Curtis died, yet they play quite a few of those songs, including joy division.

I think it's the only album where Sumner was really sincere about what he was singing, i.e. finally bringing meaning to his otherwise usual nonsense. Despite the gaiety of the music, the lyrics may be too introspective to sing them off the stage, especially 22 years later.

I know they played them live in '89 but Sumner seemed to regret it afterwards, dismissing them as "tracks bad live"...

I reckon it's for no particular reason at all... It's all just an unhappy coincidence. Perhaps on the rare occasions they've been looking to add new songs to the setlist, they've just casually overlooked it, maybe because of the lack of big hits on there (they seem to have been enjoying playing 'greatest hits' setlists for a while now).

It's mainly because there is a lot of reprogramming and resourcing of sounds involved in getting most of them back into play.

It was a top ten album in the UK charts, probably their most successful

Probably hard to replicate live that smooth produced sound of the album.maybe they tried in rehearsals and they just sounded poor.

You are correct. In one of the interviews between songs on the Live in Glasgow DVD, Bernard states that they stopped playing songs from Technique because they didn't work well live.

And one could argue this is one of the main reasons Hooky left.

They could actually play much more material if they were willing to play for 2 hours instead of just one. A number of other bands do, and their catalogue is by no means lacking.
