Ok this has been bugging the shit out of me for years. The version of BLT differs between the UK and US versions of "?". The US cover had the slightly lighter colour blue question mark on it.

Can anyone put a name to that version of BLT on the US version?

The US Best Of is way better than the UK one which has that short version of 1963 with the dreaded edit missing out a crucial part! Aargh, sheer butchery and ruination of the song. However I cant remember anything especially about the versions of BLT on it… to my ears there is the album version, the substance version and the Armand Van Helden version, those are the only three noticeably different versions and each is good in their own way.

The Rest Of only seems to have one tracklisting as far as I know. Some great remixes are on it - Blue Monday Hardfloor, Confusion Pump Panel, the aforesaid BLT, Age of Consent Howie B…

That would be a brilliant idea! Especially with a band like NO whom have weird exclusive mixes for songs scattered about.

I know my hearing isn't as good as it was but the ending (like the last 10 seconds) IS different on the US version of ? Compared to the UK version.

So is it the married to the mob version?

You sure you don't mean the 1963 Arthur Baker version? IIRC it fades out on the UK CD single, but completes on the US Best Of - am I right? BLT94 is the same on both as far as I know (I currently own none of the above)

I haven't verified it myself, but someone has told me that the edit from the CA gatefold 7" is not a unique edit, but the same version as on the regular UK 7". The track time differs because the CA 7" has a slightly higher speed.

The US 7" promo (DJ 28421-7) has a rare edit - it may be the same as on the CA 12" promo (DJF 206), as well as the US 12" promo (PRO-A-2600). It anyone can confirm this I'd be grateful.

Canadian 7" sounds the same as the UK edit.

Also, the Threesome OST version is merely an early fade out of the same mix.

Depends on which Canadian 7" you've got.

There's the first one (FAC-26 A), same as PRO-A-2600, 20546-2, PRO-CD-7587, and FAC 163-7 A1 and the second one ("Remixed & Edited", FAC-26A-2), also on 7-28421-A?

Then there's a slightly shorter edit of the second one (no strings before the final chorus, and then a fade-out) on PRO-A-2636 and, I think, on the "Threesome" OST.

All these are various edits of the Shep Pettibone mix, by the way. Nothing to do with the Stephen Hague mix from 1988 MTTM OST, re-remixed in 1994 for ? (the best of...).

My Canadian mix turned out to be the same as the one used for Recycle. I was actually wrong about which was the original UK 7".

The Threesome OST mix isn't merely a fade of the Canadian one either. As you stated, the strings aren't there before the last chorus (nasty edit).

It's amazing that such a classic track was so mercilessly butchered time and again.

I have only just realised that mine is the REMIXED A2 version. Cheers for this information.

In 1994 WB in the US decided to issue Bizarre Love Triangle as a CD single owing to it's continued popularity on alternative radio and the fact that it never had a proper single release here. When someone from the label phoned up (presumably) Rob Gretton to ask the proper title of the dub mix (a.k.a. Bizarre Dub Triangle), Gretton replied "I don't care" and hung up the phone.

I much prefer the original name Bizarre Dub Triangle over I Don't Care.

Perhaps "Let's Go" was intended as the b side of BLT at some point? And maybe this was carried over by mistake?

When were the "Salvation" tracks recorded anyway? The "Collector's edition" liner notes say the location was "Pluto Studios, Manchester", but nothing about a date. Were they all recorded at the same time? Given that "Skullcrusher" was first performed in March 1984 and TBTHOG didn't appear in the live set until January 1987, it's difficult to guess.

It's entirely possible that "Let's Go" with a rough "nothing for me" vocal was completed before the release of BLT (which was in January 1987 in the US, anyway), isn't it?

Let's Go is an outtake from the Low-life sessions. It was recorded at that time, and the demo is floating around. The lyrics were re-written and the vocal was re-recorded for Best Of.

The tracks that ended up on Salvation were likely properly recorded in '86 when the band was approached to score Pretty In Pink. When John Hughes decided to go with multiple artists, the tracks probably sat around until they were asked to contribute to Salvation. The one new song is TBTHOG.

The bonus discs aren't curated well - I wouldn't hold them up as any sort of definitive versions.

I believe Star Records (on Hayes) was where I found the UK version. You probably remember that place.
