hey neworder fans. i want to get my mind off the terrorist attacks for a minute and fortunately i received the cdrom anthology from lars tuesday and just recently started to listen to the live stuff. i remember huntsman talking about a good version of Dream Attack he had on vinyl so i searched the discs but no luck. several Dream Attacks but none as clear as i would like. which is the best live version of Dream Attack? is there a perfect recording of a new order show? hooky's basslines are so interesting live, not just on DA but Sunrise rocks and there are plenty more. I want to know what you guys & girls think is the best live versions of individual tracks/best recording/etc...i wish i could have experienced the mayhem during Ceremony (is that allen at doncaster rotters club 18.april.1985 i hear? Swan? Huntsman? the whole audience can be heard singing and it helped me understand why those guys carried the flag to all the Area:one shows)

Well, to me the best live recording is a bootleg called "electronic ecstasy". I suppose it's from the Reading Gig 1993. Tracklist is: Ruined in a day, Regret, Round & Round, World, As it is when it was, Everyone Everywhere, True Faith, Perfect Kiss, Temptation, Blue Monday and Fine Time. Sound quality is incredible, but strangely enough DreamAttack and BLT are missing which they did play.

Big G - Dream Attack is masterful on the bootleg vinyl I have. Seems a few people want this so I am heading into my loft today to drag it out of cold storage. This vinyl called 'Secstasy' is 'THE BEST' live 'BOOTLEG' I have ever come across (and I've been to x amount of record fayres). Can't remember what else was on the record, but its all good quality. I remember when I bought it that it looked almost as good as a genuine NO release, however, when I saw it was a bootleg, most notably because of the words 'Long Live the North/South Divide' written on the back... I expected the worst in terms of overall quality - I was wrong, and it is outstanding.

Dream Attack (not wanting to go on about it... or, go on then...) in particular is superb - at the moment the string sound comes in after the guitary beginning the recording 'captures' the moment of beauty that the original record has... quite literally, a lucky find of an excellent recording. And I want to share it with you all... you lucky chickens!!!!

On the official line, I do really like the live snippits shown on the NewOrderStory VHS video... quality and quality of playing first class.

'Electronic Ecstacy' is a fine rercording. It's sound quality is down to the fact that it is a recording from a BBC radio broadcast. That is also why the 'Michael Jackson'line from 'True Faith' is bleeped out. I've got the same gig on video including BLT and Dream Attack but it's an audience recording so the quality is less than perfect.

By the way, we've put our hands on a SOUNDBOARD recording of New Order's performance at Cologne a month ago, and we will be putting the whole thing online very soon (and therefore, accepting the BOOTLEGGER label one person has put on us recently). For the moment, we've made 60 Miles an Hour available (not sure if it's in full quality though).

As you will find, Bernard is being TERRIBLY FUNNY during that show. I've never heard him go so far in front of a hostile crowd. Here are the highlights:

YOUR SILENT FACE: "Are you having a good time here in Cologne? It doesn't fucking look like it! (...) We're gonna play something you don't like. This is called Your Silent Face. (SONG STARTS) This is a very Bavarian song!!! Think of the mountains in Bavaria!!!!! Skiing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Naked sonners!!!!!!! (????????) I was gonna say something else, but I won't..."

AFTER BIZARRE LOVE TRIANGLE: "I see you got room to move here in Cologne. Do you like dance music???" No? Aherm. Allright. Do you like marching music???" (starts laughing)

TEMPTATION: "Ok, this is a song you probably have never heard of. Actually, looking at you... But in England, it's a very famous song. (Hooky starts laughing is head off) It's called Temptation. (song starts) It's about doing BAD THINGS! Which you obviously, never do!!! Like picking your nose... ...and forget to cut your toe nails!"

And unless I'm wrong, the show features Barney speaking a little bit of german as well here and there!

What's the date on Seccstasy? I have the extra tracks not on Electronic Ecstasy but the sound quality is not as good as EE. Is there a full version with high quality throughout? As it Is When it Was sounds great live. I wish there were a studio version of Face-up like the live version circa 86. Should be revisited for the next cash-in.

3.25.89? If so, the set list looks outstanding. dream attack and 1963 in one set? personally i think the obligatory classics need to be abandoned for the upcoming tour. this means BLT/Touched/BlueMonday/TrueFaith.

Jeez! Rotter's Doncaster, 1985 - my third NO gig, and if you've got a tape with some idiot shouting into the mic halfway through the show, that's my mate Doddsy (I think he shouted "Stiff Kittens" - we formed a band and nicked the old JD name for a laugh. Sad but true. I left after one gig, and they turned into a Goth band, but I forgive 'em 'cos they're my mates.

The people singing on the bootleg will probably include a fairly drunk crew from East Yorkshire who are currently plotting up for the trip to Glasgow.

We're also taking a few NO newcomers to Barrowlands, us old 'uns need someone to go to the bar for us and fetch the beers.

Can't remember who supported at Rotters, but I remember the Leeds, Tiffany's gig around that time, with a very early Happy Mondays appearance, just after they'd released Funky Dancing, a great night was had by all in the most packed out nightclub you can imagine.

The crowd weren't hostile at all, Seb. They were just completely DISINTERESTED in New Order. They even started up a Mexican Wave during the set, they were that bored. If you listen to the end of 60mph there's a massive cheer, and Barney genuinely seems to think it's for the song, but what actually happened was that the ENTIRE STADIUM was now doing one huge wave and they were actually clapping THEMSELVES!!

I was surprised too that the crowd SUDDENLY responded to a brand new song while being asleep during the big hits! And by "hostile", I meant "not friendly to New Order".

In any case Al, in your long life as a NewOrder fan, do you remember Barney going this far in his comments about a crowd???

Well, at their last gig in Berlin (08 April 1984 !!) he said: "Right, you're the most miserable fucking audience we've played to in our fucking lives. I own the bootleg and listened to it again these days, but I couldn't really understand why Barney was so upset about the crowd. In fact, they didn't ever come to Berlin again until the date in November 2001!

I seem to remember the Oxford Apollo went down in the annals of New Order history as a bit of a 'bleak' gig. Can't remember what was said on stage but there was a bad atmosphere all round and a few things were thrown at Hooky. Just remember Ceremony a couple of songs from the end and the whole place really took off.

I've got the tape of Oxford Apollo (one of my favourite gigs for the set anyway), and Hooky was scowling all through Face Up, then they just went after 10 songs and the crowd got a bit pissed off. No real talking from anyone, though I think Hooky said something after Shellshock and before Sunrise. I'll have to dig the tape out again.

Only had it a few days, but I absolutely love Taras Shevchenko. The band really look demented, especially Barney, and they're still going for the Joy Division-esque stage show.
