Mods, do you now have some power?

I've noticed two rather pathetic threads have dissapeared since yesterday, have we got active mods with powers now?

Thanks, the place needs a bloody good clean up:thumb:

Well obviously nothing's been done to increase powers or even do anything at all about the site......

But I've spent several hours yesterday and today going through some of the threads, trying to weed out the spammers and getting rid of the contentious and inflammatory.

We only have powers in our allotted forums. Bit of a cunt really. Espescially with some of the pish that's been on here in the last few months.

Someone really needs to moderate your use of the c-word, Shug... :nono:

can we have alist of who mods which forums so we can contact the appropriate person about spam?

if you could give me the power to do it I would. (I know it's not that simple though)

I think it's time we got NOOL back on track, the band are (in some form) back together so we will possibly get new members, would be nice to have the place looking decent.

Nobody can do anything without Nicos, and he never replies to anything these days. We're stuck with the decomposed version.

The set up for Music For Pleasure is quite impressive because it has no moderators.

So spam is multiplying in there like bacteria.

Brilliant planning

must say, don't contribute as much as one would like, especially as nearly every time I try to log on it doesn't recognise my password and can't be to arsed all the time in changing it.

but as it appears that there are some serious noolers contributing regularly, shall make more of an effort.

anyway shugz, keep the word cu*t flowing as I am sure them that complained of Barneys use of, will avoid any thread where they think such words are in use.

Mods:

If we are not going to use the Ceremony (for live new order) and Music For Pleasure (for projects like The Light) forums, can we just delete them?

We can't amend any of the forum structures, only Nicos could do this as he's the only one with code access. All we can do is delete posts. If I had my way everything would be closed down besides Digital Republic and BCD, and I'd create a separate Light board for people to wind Jack up :evil4:

So, did Nicos get hit by a bus or something? ;)

Can't he pass the admin powers to someone else?

Not very nice comment! the place wouldn't exist without him. He's a very busy bloke and doesn't have time for this anymore, he's got to earn a living instead.

Yeah, I have met him - and i've been here since the beginning - I KNOW how much he has done here - and I miss him - and I think he'd chuckle if he read that...

christ these forums are uptight these days! wtf!

Well, there is so much work to do to update this site that I just get discouraged every time I see the amount of work I would have to do.

I'm unsure where is located the code of the current NOOL, so I would have to rebuild the whole forum system from scratch in order to give more power to those who needs it.

Either that, or I reset the forums from scratch with a better forum system... or find a way to import the old stuff.

In other words, it's a bit depressing just to think about it.

But, but.. there is a new website design pattern I'm learning right now at work, and revamping NOOL might be a good learning school (for the techies, it's ASP.NET MVC3)

Who knows.. with the new activity going on, might be worth it.. I got a bit discouraged when the band decided to stop.

build or setup a temporary board, test that, and tell people to transition over to that one...

archive this board, and let people still access the posts as read-only.

This would probably be the best idea. It takes a HUGE amount of time to build a good forum system (not that this one was ever good), there are several good ones on the market.

i think with the renewed interest and touring this whole year, there will be many new people joining and coming to the forums.

yeah, please look around before switching, it's not like this has to be done anytime soon.

however, it would address a lot of the forum issues, and bring it up to date with other boards. that have more modern things like captchas to weed out new users/spam.

and also add better posting, editting capabilities.

this current one has managed. but is starting to show its age.

especially with the search, and the messaging.

good luck.. will keep checking back.

it might work for you..

but have you noticed all the spam? (joka ona - fake passports) everywhere!

and there's a lot of unused thread/ categories..

finally, if we really wanted to straighten things out.. all the peter hook/light information would be moved into a separate area with the the side groups..

and only new order posts would be in 'digital republic' area.

here, here!

ok, will watch

we really need:

  1. JUST new order forum
  2. live shows/dates/reviews
  3. side groups/the light/the other 2/bad lieutenant etc
  4. video links/media
  5. parody/art/off-topic forum

for starters

Said it in t'other forum - I don't think the NOOL engine needs changing, that's what works fine and will work even better if we just have a redesign with 3 forums:

  1. Digital Republic (anything new order, jd, spin off, side project, live gigs, et bloody cetera).
  2. Behind Closed Doors (off topic).
  3. Archive (of everything that was posted prior to the NOOL redesign).

Also:

a. Keep the news items on the front page. Pretty easy to keep this up to date - I'd even volunteer to do that!

b. Kill the "blog function".

How much would it cost to either revamp the whole site or build a new one.

I would be more than willing to pay an annual subscription towards the site. Would it not be unreasonable for all members to chip in a tenner (sterling) or whatever you mods deemed reasonable?.

Maybe amend the log in so that only subscribers get full access to new threads and the Band, Music and Live sections, as these now need updating.

Funds could be then used for this and uploading videos, music etc that we can share.

Even after the various bands and projects cease I am sure there are plenty of members who would continue to use the site to keep in touch and reminise, especially as NOOL members are spread around the globe.

If worth persuing maybe do a yes and no question to this for general feedback.

As I said earlier, things are on the way. Given the way the site is built, the changes won't be incremental but will happen all at once. Just bear with us please, it'll be worth it.

good to know..

some people don't like changes..

but you have to bite the bullet and just do it sometimes..

Tim I take it you have been in contact with Nicos off the board?

Cos there's fook all about this on the Mods forum. We have been asking Nicos for the last 6 months to get this sorted, hence Ally having enough and bowing out.

But why isn't anybody bothering to delete every single one of those annoying multi-aliased Fake Passports and Cheap DVD threads that keep appearing every single bloody day?? They need erasing without trace from this forum because they are starting to clutter up the thread lists and getting right on my wick! Each time we log in here we're greeted with a wall of identical spamming posts with yet another new username. Enough is bloody well enough!

It's 'bots' behind it. Not an actual person. Most forums have mechanisms to prevent them from operating but as this one hasn't been updated in years it's easy to do. Even a simple 'captcha' code (type what you see) on the forum sign-up page would solve the problem.

I understand that sites cost money but making it a subscription site might make this site an exclusive club (even if it was affordable). What would the payment options even be? What if some payment options were difficult for some in other countries? What would the band, music and live sections be? Exactly what it is now? As for videos and pics, some NO/JD etc vids are on YT, by Rhino Records and other official accounts. Maybe they would be live videos taken by smartphones? What would they be? I'm not saying I'm not going to give money, but some things to think about...yes I want to support NO to the best I can, but I don't want this site to be an exclusive club or a two-tier club.

building a new site is relatively cheap these days, but Updating any website is unbelievably time consuming and not as easy as people may think.

This forum is the lifeblood of this site and personally i dont think it needs to be changed.

Building and transfering the forum information to a new one would take YEARS!

Are you sure it's bots? I don't think so - it's definitely a human with too much fucking time on their hands, cos look right now - there's two new ones who have just spammed the boards within a couple of hours of me last posting here (check the top users list - they're number 1 and 2) and if they're bots, then they wouldn't have done this in retaliation to what I have been posting up here cos it appears I might have just unwittingly set them off into overdrive after telling them to fuck off and get a life.

No bot behaves like that, so it's deffo a human now cranking up the offensive.

It's 100% a bot. You're getting automatically generated PM's because you've replied to the thread and I would hazard a guess that because the threads are getting replied to that's why the level of spamming has increased dramatically. By replying you're identifying the thread and this website as 'active' which the bot picks up on.
