Live favourites

Been doing a lot of travelling recently, with only an old car tape player for company, so naturally I've been digging out some of the old tapes. Many haven't been listened to for a good twenty years, so it's been great to reminisce while driving, and surprisingly many songs that I used to be indifferent to have now become firm live favourites (it's that long since I listened to any of the records I've forgotten many of the production nuances).

EGG from the Kilkenny 83 gig Temptation, Zurich Volkshaus 84 Temptation again , Kilkenny 83 again. A powerhouse juggernaut that's stripped down to just Steve's drumming at the end.

Hurt , Rome 82 as featured on the Glasgow DVD. Fine Time, stadium acid house at Brum NEC 89 Ceremony, Kilkenny83 "Straight from Top Of The Pops we have New Order!"

God, loads more

Confusion, Kilkenny 83 again. Builds and builds , that mother

In A Lonely Place, Denial, both Bologna '82. Really powerful versions, Steve's drumming is majestic.

Lonesome Tonight, Hacienda 83. Video can be found on YouTube but I reckon it's the best live version they ever did of this track, notwithstanding Barney's shaky vocals.

Hurt, Barca 84. Definitive version of the track in my opinion

Sister Ray, Auckland '87. Storming version of this live romp.

Elegia, Glasto '87. Top version of this track again.

All Day Long, Pier 84 New York '87. Best live version of this track I've ever heard. The version of Ceremony from the same gig is pretty cool as well.

Vanishing Point, Denver '89. Again one of the best versions they did of this particular track.

Ceremony with Ian McCulloch on vocal, GMEX 86

"EGG" at Kilkenny is a good call, but I thought "Little Dead" at that gig was outstanding - full of menace, which was one of the qualities that drew you in to NewOrder in those days.

"Sunrise" on Pumped Full of Drugs, similarly - all the intra-band tensions driving a huge, shaking performance of a monster of a track.

I seem to recall enjoying the version of "Blue Monday" they performed at Reading '89, with added Italian-house piano...

And, er, "Ceremony", every single time it's been played.

Most of the songs are much better live, the only album they actually managed to produce properly was Technique IMHO, until Get Ready and Sirens, both of which weren't mostly conceived in a live setting.

Movement sounds like Unknown Pleasures, the songs are shrouded in a dense mist and has to be played really loud to get anything out of it. Live though, the songs had all got a lot more going for them, and by the end of 1981 they were flying as a live unit. Listen to Denial, Chosen Time or ICB live and they show you what the songs were supposed to sound like without Hannett's overbearing.

PC&L grew from live evolution, all the songs were crafted over a period of months, bits added and taken away, but they crucially got Ultraviolence hopelessly wrong on record, all the menace was sucked out and what had been an outstanding live song was just another track on the album.

Low Life was a 50/50 split between songs that had been evolved live and songs that were studio conceived and had been recorded before being taken out live. That said, they managed to botch the recording on half of it, Sunrise on record isn't a patch on the live beast, and Face Up deteriorated between the early versions and the recorded version (and was never the same live after they recorded it).

Brotherhood has always felt like a weak album to me, not enough good songs and a piss-poor production that sounded like they didn't really know what to do with the songs. Broken Promise was a real beast live but sounds anaemic and generally rubbish on record. Angel Dust on record isn't a patch on the live takes. Weirdo is ruined on record. That said, BLT was got just right on the record, they managed to capture the live song absolutely spot on.

Technique, Get Ready and WFTSC were all written and recorded before the songs found their way into the live environment, so there's no real valid comparison, the recorded versions are the definitive versions.

Mr Disco 1989 tour - Marbella, Barcelona , Corfu

Agree with Tim. I think the songs on the first three albums are far better live than on record. By the middle of 1982 the first album songs sounded great live as did the early versions of songs that were to become PCL. Ultraviolence and 586 are ruined on PCL. The basic drum machine and early sequencer patterns also allowed them to experiment more live with long versions sof EGG, Temptation, 585 & Ultraviolence.

Some personal faves: Temptation - Bologna 82 EGG - Brussels 82 or Walthamstow 81 586 - Milan 82 Ultraviolence - Hull 82 Chosen Time / In A Lonely Place - Futurama 82

Still maintain 1987 was the highpoint live. Really like the Chapter III album though haven't listened to it since the turntable was put away when we moved house 15 years ago.

if they would get into using something like Ableton live, they could get back to that kind of stuff, would be much better than the set in stone backing they have now.

My choice, skull crusher Barcelona 1984, I loved it when they jammed stuff.

Shellshock was a fookin' ace live track, absolutely belting. So was State of the Nation actully, never thought I'd ever say that!

Yes to both! Shellshock live was much, much better than on record - it always sounded like it was about to topple out of control, and that was exciting.

I have to agree that this was a bit special - the first time Ceremony *really* got me off my head.

Notables for me:

Apollo 98 (my 1st Neworder gig): Regret - the "fuck me, I've finally got to see Neworder" moment. Isolation - the " and they're playing Joy Division!" moment.

Reading98: True Faith and Temptation.

Looking forward to the re-tooled Temptation and 586 at the Apollo in a few weeks...

Just generally, I like a lot of the 82 gigs when the band seemed to be experimenting more with effects and getting very dubby and trippy. Standouts for me are Rollingstone 82 and Hacienda from the same year.

Is it this new tour that's made me dig out me old box of of bootlegs?

What a set! Barney apologising halfway through for all the new ones! All Day Long sounds fantastic. I don't think I've got many live versions of that.

And Tim, I think, was tallking about the dark brooding 586 and Ultraviolence live versions before they recorded them- there's definitely a few of them from 81/82.

Blue Monday - Reading 1989 : totally gonzo bonkers synths and effects

True Faith - Apollo 98. Durin this, when the long synth lines come into just before the verse, I knew, this was the best gig of my life. Not bettered it yet.

Had Reading 93 on today. A bit too slick and professional for my liking. Followed by Birmingham 85. I remember being gutted when Low Life came out a couple of weeks later and Subculture wasn't actually called "Fucking" as Bernard had told us!!!

I had Oxford 86 on while dusting my synths!

And then Hooky joins in and Barney coins the slogan:

Set was a stormer too. It must have been hard playing to an unresponsive crowd.

Ah the irony of the Barn when pissed off. It was anything but an unresponsive crowd at Oxford that night. Two separate brawls, a gang of youths down the front spitting at Barney, and someone hit Hooky with a pot before Sunrise. Horrible tense atmosphere towards the end, and you can hear the gig going downhill from Shellshock onwards. One of the very best ten song setlists though!

Radio or audience? If you listen to Round and Round and compare the two sources some of Hooky's bass has been err....polished shall we say. Listen to Hooky's part before the singing starts.

I was only 17 meself at the time but distinctly remember gangs of much younger kids (12/13?) seemingly mobbing up to basically bully other younger kids at said concert.

Ceremony was a proper riot, from what I remember.

Was my first New Order gig! Went with a mate, we were both 16 back then and were right down the front. Remember it being completely mad and a brilliant set. Think someone jumped on stage quite early on to grab Hooky, and what with that and the pot near the end, quite surprised he didn't wade into the crowd and sort it out! :)

It's all a bit of haze, but amazing set, fucking loudest PA I've heard, beer, sweat, flying fists and puke everywhere about sums it up!

89 was a strange year. Started with two French gigs where the sound was awful and the band not much better, then Glasgow and Brum,and after Brum I vowed never to bother with them again. US tours were drawn out and not all that varied, and that was the start of the "same/similar set every night" that has blighted them ever since.

Yeah but they were playing Technique songs every night. What I would give for 'Vanishing Point' or 'Run' to be regulars now...

Most of them didn't work though. Loveless was just dire, All The Way was a mess, Run was and has always been hopelessly overrated (and they recognised that themselves I think and stopped playing it on the US Tour, from memory). Only Dream Attack, Vanishing Point and Mr Disco came across as well live as on record.

new order and the bunnies played san diego, then irvine meadows , i think, then went up the coast to santa barbara and san francisco . i missed those northern cal shows , i remember hearing ceremony while dozens of younger fans were keeping me busy getting them beers -they had to be 21 . i was up to the challenge, being 20 years older and ecstatic with a terrific combination of ecstasy, beer , and ganja . i think it was days later in san francisco that ian fell or got pushed . also bernard was getting chubby, so he kept his shirt on . all were still huggable, bernard more so .

I think the bootleg I have is from the mixer as the crowd is very quiet on it...

Only ever heard one audience source of this one, huge overblown sound that summed it up, couldn't hear a word Bernard was saying.

Had a bit of Atlanta 89 on in the car on the way home, cracking Mr Disco. Actually looking forward to the other side of the tape in the morning!

Just listened to Hurt from the Vienna 1984 broadcast and thought that it was the best performance of it that I ever heard.

Really love the second time they played Sooner Than You Think, Volkhaus 84, especially the drums at the beginning.

Ultraviolence is another fave of mine fromj that gig too.

What about that Fox Theatre gig where both Gillian and Hooky fuck up Chosen Time. Barney's vocals were ace on it.

Turned out that was Perth 15/5/85 not Atlanta Fox Theatre, we got the wrong gig from the box. Atlanta has never surfaced.

Played Atlanta 89 twice over the last couple of days, enjoyable gig. Way better than the tape filler, which has reminded me just how shit The Beloved were most of the time!

What I do remember is Mac singing the words "Ceremony...Ceremony". I swear it was during the actual song Ceremony. Perhaps it was integrated into on of the Echo songs in their set. Do you recall?

I had just graduated from HS. Attended this last concert of the summer for me --- before heading down to L.A. for college. Ah... those carefree days!

Mac did sing the words "Ceremony, Ceremony!" But, it was probably integrated into an Echo song.

BTW --- did you attend this gig at the UCB Greek? It's my all time favorite venue! Ahh summer of 87. I will never forget.

Came back to the Greek 6 yrs later for my graduation commencement "ceremony" for my graduate school at UCB. After that, it was work. work. work.

I was at the first show (on the 18th). The Bunnymen headlined.

Gene Loves Jezebel were awful. They kept mentioning San Francisco and crowd memebers were yelling back "It's Berkeley!".

On the 19th, New Order headlined. Which gig were you at?

I was reading through the thread saying to myself 'No-one has mentioned the most classic live recording in history yet'. And here it is. And as Tim says, Perth not Atlanta.

I didn't think Hooky messed it up too much, the main problem was that Gillian completely forgot how to play it and that caused Bernard to start laughing during various parts of the verses.

Ah yes, the "hello shitheads" gig! Washington Ontario Theater July 83. Hooky was wankered before the gig on melonballs, and didn't show for the scheduled start time.

They went on without him and opened with IALP, with Rob on cymbals and no bass part, then they attempted Ultraviolence without him, only for the returning hero to emerge without any sheepishness at all midway through the song, saying "hello shitheads" and strapping on his bass!

My memory is even cloudier now.

Here's what I recall ---

I remember attending a FRI night show, so that makes the 18th, first show.

I also recall that Echo was on stage before New Order, but you said Echo "headlined" so they must have come up last.

Looks like I'll have to gig up my concert tix stub.

Bradford 84... Great EGG Temptation 586 medley and a huge version of Lonesome Tonight.

Just redownloaded Rennes 1985, a sbd, and damnnit if it is not much better than PFD!! Even BM sounded cool for a change. Loved it when Bernard called the audience daft bastards and told them that he speaks English not French. Been playing at volume until kids bitched.

Most definately some great historical events in the world of New Order, but hey, last October, Brussels, "5 8 6". Now that was rather tasty, a complete curveball to everyone there (audience wise).

Barney said "Fromage et potage" during Orleans' gig two days later...

That was it, yes. Rennes was the introduction of As It Is as "Fromage et Petit Pois". Orleans was "Fromage et Potage. Ucky fucky". Always had such a way with words.

Rennes it was. Cracking version of the tune.
