Hooray, finally some news about Peter Hook that doesn't have to do with him and his former Joy Division/New Order bandmates getting into childish verbal fights. It turns out that the famed bassist nearly had another gig in the early '90s. In an interview with the Quietus, Killing Joke's Jaz Coleman reveals that Hook almost joined the post-punk outfit and that some material of his playing with them still exists:

“I haven’t seen Peter Hook since the '90s but we send messages to each other via people. Peter wanted to be in Killing Joke and we ended up recording some songs at [his studio] and it sounded like a real hybrid of Killing Joke and Joy Division…I think he’s frightened of us ‘cos he quit drinking. So have I, but I don’t think he knows that!” Haha, this is pretty interesting, but how long before the audio ends up online? Please? Killing Joke's new album, MMXII, drops April 2.

This isn't exactly new news... it was written up in the British weeklies at the time that Hooky would be touring with the Killing Joke. But then it of course never ended up happening.

i remember that ian mcculloch and bernard recorded songs about that same time. lost songs.

Twas McCulloch & Marr, which was recorded in 1993 whilst Barney was touring "Republic". Masters were lost when a couriered van was stolen and destroyed.

That's the story they gave.

I think they actually had a disagreement about the project and concocted the story to get out of it.

A couple of the Electrafixion tracks have Marr songwriting credits so some of the work survived.

A third track was the basis for On Top of the World (EatB, Ocean Colour Scene, Space & the Spice Girls) which Marr wasn't too happy about.

I always doubted that somehow those two would put everything they'd ever done in just one van...

It wouldve sounded shit, his bass would've been lost in the racket Geordie makes and then he would probably have buggered off in acrimony.

A lot was made of this late '93 in the music press but it never happened of course. However Hook and Jaz both appear on Freispiel.

I remember reading this too at the time. Hook was quoted saying that Youth would play the first few dates of the tour, then he (Hook) would replace him. I guess Youth was busy with his superstar producer career at the time but was persuaded to play a few gigs? And then he went on to do the whole lot after all?

Maybe he could join The Cure now - and kick Simon Gallup out?
