It was a bit "groundbreaking" at the time, but the BBC gave over an entire day to a music programme. It was broadcast on BBC2 and Radio 1. The whole shebang was called "Rock Around The Clock", and New Order appeared simultaneously on the TV and Richard Skinner's "Saturday Live" radio show.

If I remember the story right, they had to drive from Cornwall to London to do the show, and got stuck in traffic for 3 hours. They actually arrived at the studio 30 minutes before they were live on air. Also, one of their sequencers had packed up meaning that they couldn't play what they had planned. To further complicate matters, it was the first time they had performed using just headphones to hear themselves.

I guess you'd agree that all these factors had an influence over the mood of the piece....

Still one of the all time classic renditions of Temptation though.

And they did Portsmouth Guildhall the following evening.

Actually watched this last night. They look SOOOOOOOO pissed off, the mood not helped by Barney's obvious amphetamine-provoked agitation. Christ, you can almost hear him grinding his teeth........

Nice shorts, though.

It's on a video that Mike Garrity was touting for £6.50 a while back. If Mike hadn't fallen off the side of the earth you could get this as well as loads of other stuff.

If you mail me your address I'll put ths in the post to you, unless Martin has already responded to you.

This was the opening day of the 84/85 season, remember listening to it on the way back from Notts County. Yorks/Notts encounters had a bit of spice to 'em then as it was around the time of the Miners strike...'you're scabs & you know you are'...followed by a friendly pitch invasion. They're a forgiving lot Leeds fans, they've been singing this line at Forest all the way through the 90s!.

The venue for the recording was the 'Radio 1 Basement Studio' the broadcast was around 2.30pm on a saturday afternoon.

Hope that helps

You're welcome, Clive, if you email me your address. Its on an old, nth generation compilation tape that includes various TOTP performances, that mid-80s ('85?) Belgium TV gig, plus other stuff..........

That Belgium TV thing ... wasn't that 'The Box'?

:hat:

The BBC basement gig is ace - have it on vid., a NO must-have.

Dunno about 'The Box': but said gig does contain - if I remember correctly - fantastic uber-patronising Barneyism along the lines of (having just played "Let's Go"):

"You may have noticed that there were no vocals on that song....That's. Because. It's. An. Instrumental."

They also play "Atmosphere".....

Certainly was The Box, I think it has been repeated a few times on Belgian TV, I have a half decent copy, Let's Go is superb, and a nice wee version of Atmosphere on it.

I have been dealing a bit with Mike Garrity early this year....but somehow everything went dead, all of a sudden, as if Mike has gone off transmission or loop off to another orbit.....so, is he still around?...or has he ( joined Elvis? )
