Greetings chickens - I would be intrigued to know whether fans of JD/NO etc. enjoy similar celluloid tastes.
Just 1 entry please - 'your favourite film', in terms of depth, quality, enjoyment, sentiment, exhilaration etc. etc.
For me - Summer of '42 (an oddball classic)
I'm afraid I would have to submit 3 films, Apocolypse Now, Blade Runner and Star Wars.
The best film i've seen this year is that Amoros Perros.
Didn't Order use samples from Marlon Brando in Apocolypse Now? (By the way it seems weird writing the words 'apocolypse now' given recent events and I've deliberately not mentioned the title of the 12" from which I think the samples were on).
... I can imagine what that 12" is called. An instrumental perhaps?
Evidently, the film 'A.I.' is meant to be really strange. A pal of mine has seen it in Saudi (don't ask) and said that it wasn't brilliant, but that it was definately the strangest film he'd ever seen... and he's seen some strange films believe me.
Sounds good. Spielberg's a good bloke after all.
If your classing Star Wars as one of your top 3... you must feel that Episode 1 was nothing short of a mockery of the whole SW legend. Fat George would have been better off filming a small group of goldfish for 2 hours than releasing the tomato that was Episode 1. Actually, wasn't that what he did do? - Just what the hell was Jeff Jeff Binks meant to be?... a talking badger in dungarees?
"Once Upon A Time In America" - the most appaling book crafted into the ultimate celluloid epic. Completely overwhelms me every time I watch it - brilliant to view this one with a novice just to see their expression when the twist kicks in. Oh, and ACR sampled a few lines from it - "Dirty, dirty politicians" was defo used in one track.
Mr Disco, I think I know the Order track to which you're referring but surely that just sampled Caligula and 2001? Was there a Brando soundbite too?
When I first read your reply, I thought you had written 'Jeff, Jeff Banks (!)' Now that would have been interesting, we could have had a whole new costume range featuring the 'in' colours of the moment.
I was disppointed when I saw the Phanton Menace at the Pictures but I did rent it on video a few months back and its definately better second time round.
Al, you are probably right, but I remember reading somewhere about the AN samples, though my memory is not the best. The 'there is no question about it' sample and others which I could never make out at the end of the track, are these from 2001 then?
limiting to one just not fair. & feel that favourites change from day to day. this week i am mostly liking harvey (sorry no badgers, but there is an invisible rabbit), the godfather parts 1 & 2, jean de florette & manon des sources best films of recent years inc being john malkovich & l.a. confidential imho
Dave - Harvey is a masterpiece. James Stewart is a legend. It takes a great man to decide to act alongside an invisible rabbit in his prime of life, who'd have known how his career would have panned out if the producers had decided on an invisible badger? - They could have called the film 'Kenneth' instead of 'Harvey'... Kenneth is a better name surely.
Jeff Jeff Banks would have been a better choice for the lead in Episode Dirt. Can't agree that this was better 2nd time around... are you sure this isn't down to the fact that you were totally shocked when seeing it for the first time - and that shock had gone when the video was rented? - I've seen it a few times and it reminds me of a dead wasp. Can you imagine how bad Episode II will be? - I know I can't. Let's hope (and I know this isn't the case after reading the script which I have on file) they kill the giant buzzard in the first scene, preferably choppping his head off with a giant sword and shouting 'big fish wanker' at the same time.

Huntsy, I believe you're thinking of 'Once Upon A Time in The West'. OUATI America is actually a gangster film. And Jewish gangsters at that. Not a single cheroot in sight!

'My mind is broken etc' is HAL from 2001, I believe. The "I hate crows" - or whatever the line was - is taken from Caligula.
I think Flowered Up sampled Apocalypse Now though! Top group!

Likening the content and quality of said Mafia flick to similarities in certain Spagetti pics. Was putting to you that your chosen Mafia flick was on a similar thread to the gunslinging movies starring the man with no name.

The 'Monolith' is god. It is Omniscient and Omnipresent. The book is worth reading.
2010 is an underrated film - hire it if you haven't seen it.

huntsman - "there's always a bigger fish" is one of the film quotes on a quiz been sent that i can't get - what's it from?
surely the dark & moody empire is ranked higher than a new hope? when first saw them in the 70's was obviously blown away more by part iv than the sequels as it was new & one of the first films i saw that didnt have cartoon furry animals in.
but on reflection with the down ending, the sub plots more interesting, the twist better its a better film than the kurosawa inspired part iv.

Well lads...I feel almost silly admitting this...but my favorite movie of all time is Strange Brew...I'm sure sebsy and Nic will be overjoyed to hear that...if anyone in Canada even knows about this horrble (but funny in a strange, almost demented sort of way!!!) movie.
Breaking the Waves and Dancer in the Dark.Both by Lars von Trier. Also Run Lola Run,Betty Blue,Gattica,Reservoir Dogs, Videodrome,Diva,Blue Velvet,The Elephant Man,Leon,, The Girl on the Bridge,....and many more whose titles escape me.
I have a great fondness for "Carlito's Way", "Jaws", "Waiting for Guffman/Spinal Tap/Best in Show" and "The Apartment"

You've never heard of Carlito's Way? You are missing out big time! It has Al Pacino (heard of him?) and Sean Penn (with spectacular hair) and is basically a latino gangster flick set in the late 70's (very disco-heavy soundtrack). Very heavily reccommended.

Huh, no, I meant I have never heard of the movie Jeff was referring to.
I DO know about Carlito's Way but I haven't seen it. I guess i'll put that movie on the list next time I go rent one!

Little Criminals - About two fucked up kids. It was my inspiration throughout early teenage years.
'Strange Brew' - yes, yes, yes - an early 80's number made popular via the earliest 'Video Hire Stores' that opened for the first time. If I'm not mistaken around the time that 'Betamax' was still in the English vocabulary.
Jeff, you must be quite fond of 'Animal House' (Belushi in general), 'Revenge of the Nerds', erm, 'Caddyshack' and so on? - is me right or is me wrong?
The video cover was your typical 'goofy pic. of 2 blokes sat in a bottle of beer' if memory serves me correct.
Good selection of movies kids... keep 'em coming. Nobody to back my theory on '2001' then?... and just where is Geoff Klumpy these days? - the Swan?
