Maybe Barney will do an MA or PhD equivalent?

From BBC...

Peter Hook, a member of critically-acclaimed bands Joy Division and New Order, is launching a music industry degree.

The University of Central Lancashire is partnering the bass guitarist and other music industry figures in a degree in management and promotion.

The university says this will be the first such masters degree in the UK.

He describes the project as a "phenomenal hybrid".

The university is also going to give Mr Hook an honorary fellowship.

Although for anyone with a memory of mid-70s middle-of-the-road pop, he says, his only concern is that such a move might leave him with the uneasy title of Dr Hook.

And how long will this last before he accusses them of stealing his ideas and it all ends up going legal.

whatever next [eek3] doesn't command too much respect these days, perhaps he thinks a title will help ..

I think he has good intentions. It's nice to hear him do something other than The Light or to talk about Ian Curtis.

Looking at it from that angle, I suppose you're right. It will keep him busy in a positive way.

Not everything Hook does is automatically wrong, and this does seem interesting.

I do too although Id put money on both The Light and Ian being mentioned at some point in the mentoring😄

Perhaps that may be true.

Why not?? I'd love to have a degree from Hooky and his learned friends. How to be a band manager.

I don't wish Hooky ill, and I think he has good intentions, but I think the commentary made good points. That said...the people that are desperate enough to apply for this course---they will reap what they sow. Realistically, how many people would apply? How many would 'graduate'? How many of those graduates would be successful in one way or another? Surely, he may have good advice on what NOT to do, but like the commentary in the Telegraph said, there's no 'rulebook'.

Hooky kept on talking about 'soul'. The Stone Roses 'I wanna be adored' had that lyric 'I don't have to sell my soul. He's already in me.' I think Hooky has already sold his soul, even though he seems to have good intentions with this project/course. I'm not slagging him, mind you.

It did, is the object of the course to become succesful or just to, perhaps, hang out with Hooky?

The last paragraph made for uncomfortable reading tbh.

interesting that bob stanley fails to mention the fact that his band st.etienne are co-headlining a festival with "Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures live without any other original member" in Croatia in September. judging by the tone of his article that must be really eating him up inside... all this should make for a great atmosphere backstage [:d]

see you in croatia bob [hi]

come on, this is ridiculous. why should he mention this in the article? does it change any of the facts? should he cancel the gig, just because The Light are playing too? I guess Saint Etienne were on the same bill with many bands they are not too keen with. And when you see him in Croatia - what will happen? A knock on the head? Should he be afraid now?

Yeah, that comment came across as aggressive to me too, is that where we are now? Threatening folk who are critical?

I'm sure it's possible to disagree with something (and write an editorial/commentary about it) whilst still performing at the same festival. (What I want to say is that both have nothing to do with each other, so mentioning the festival would be unnecessary in the editorial/commentary).

Stanley didn't really say anything offensive, in fact he wishes Hook well.

I don't agree with all of Stanley's sentiments (Cowell being "positive" in particular) but he has a point or two.

Otherwise it's just an opinion piece and an pretty mild one at that.

In Croatia we put Bands That Don't Get Particularly Well Along But Play At The Same Festival to trial by fire. The survivor then gets to play both slots. Unfortunately noone has survived yet, and we don't get many visiting acts; on the up side, it keeps our heating bills low.

people thought that was a threat? seriously? 😕

no.

i'm just highlighting the fact that even though he's published a pretty spiteful article here, if they ended up actually meeting at this gig in a few months i bet the guy wouldn't even say anything. apply that story to most people who are spiteful in the press or on the internet. it's just life.

Personally, I read no spite in the piece. If Bob Stanley feels the need to get back at Hooky for something undisclosed its a strange way to do it.

Hooky is not only doing something for the music industry as a whole, he's doing something for people that dream of being musicians like him, who can't even read sheet music yet has become one of the most influential bass guitarists of all time. I just can't fathom how some here want to despise him even when he's doing something so noble. He may not have been a business genius, much like every other person at Factory Records, but that's exactly what makes him vital to such degree. He's going to be the artistic voice telling not to hear just producers and record label slaves wanting to make a quick buck with generic auto-tune'd crap that people listen to. I may not agree with everything he says and do, but I have the utmost respect for him, for doing what he wanted to do and saying what he wants to say, unlike big sellout self-serving twats like Bono and Madonna.

'Some make money, others make history' I'm sure Hooky's vision for this degree is to teach something in the middle, and I just can't criticize him for doing so.

It's been a regular feature of Jack's posts for a couple of years. [hi]

Perhaps you are right. I'd be surprised if we get any history-making though. Obvious point is that he is not going to do any of this for free. Good money in University lectures.

Blocking your old band's releases is a great way to financial security - NOT!

Or... is this one of the "mistakes" he'll be exploring in the course?
