I wonder if anybody knows what synths and drum machines New Order used around bizzare love triangle time/lowlife time/now.

Playstation? X-box?

Yamaha DX5 synth Yamaha RX drum machines Emulator samplers Hard sequencers (as opposed to software) Roland Octapad (Steve's digital hub) etc. etc.

A serious question: can the Emulator (both I and II) be considered a "sampler"? This is no quizz, Huntsy, I reallly want to know!

George, in answer to your quiz question:

The Emulator by Emu Systems (Australian company) is a sampler. It digitally encodes an audio signal so in essence, it 'emulates' the sound of 'anything' you wish to sample.

The main difference between the early Emulators and the modern EIII systems is the amount of sampling time (dependent on hard drive space or internal memory or RAM) and the bit rate (bit rate being the quality of the digital recording or sample). The inclusion of synth editing for samples followed also, the capacity to digitally alter the sample as you would a synthesizer.

Incidentally, I myself am the proud owner of an E-mu Systems Emax II sampler, which is in beautiful condition.

EMU-Systems were in fact a Californian outfit - it was Fairlight CMI who were Australian.

The Emu III that New Order used - now proudly owned by myself blah, blah, blah - was a major step forward for Emu and for New Order too presumably. Reliability had improved (initially) and you no longer had to utilise large format floppies. It has been described as the most complicated keyboard ever designed and built and I can assure you that its weight alone suggests that there's alot going on inside. I use it as a good quality master controller now and very soon should have the entire library of New Orders original sounds backed up on the Mac tho' I can't imagine using these at all. I was also lucky enough to get hold of a set of Kraftwerks original samples and both the Linn and Oberheim DMX sample library at the same time as the E-III along with a massive collection of Sequential Circuits/Voyetra samples that he band had obviously been using for live performances. I managed to fix the bugs on a disc of Arthur Bakers studio sounds too so if you're interested in any of this stuff HEADHUNTER - just ask...

Hookys drum pad was originally a 2 pad Simmonds set-up then a Simmonds "Suitcase" which he progressively destroyed. He then went on to use a Roland "Octapad" which again he played beyond repair. Not sure what he was using at the Move festival but I don't think it was a Roland - I was about 3 feet away from it filming as he collapsed on top of it causing even more damage no doubt.
