Not as many as they owe to me. I think Blue Monday came out a bit earlier than The Walk but I wanted it to sound like the band Japan, not New Order. Simon Gallup and Peter Hook have got similarly aggressive personae on stage, although I think Simon is a far superior bass player. And the six-string bass was an instrument we both picked up at the same time in the early '80s. But I've never deliberately copied New Order.

Note: Hooky started playing with his 6-string Shergold Marathon before Simon Gallup, which later bought an Eccleshall 335 identical to Hooky's, and Smith is a serf-serving cunt. 😎

I ain't muso enuff to comment, but I remember Hooky slagging off Simon, but he slags off everyone. In 93 he was asked about imitators (Enjoy the silence, Inbetween days etc) and he said he didn't really care, journos were more interested than he was. He also said the bassline from From Safety To Where was ripped off from a Cure song, but 'You take a bit, you give a bit back.' I have never worn a dress either. Promise.

I watched Top Of The Pops 2 last night. It was pretty shit but it occured to me that Fat Bob has been pretty much copying Terry Hall and his mannerisms for most of his career. Only in a real shit way.

I must confess that I have seen 5 of those 3 hour gigs. Fat Bob and Company can reach down deep inside the vault for songs. And it does not matter how many people are in The Cure or who quit. They tour North America more frequently and play more than 5 dates per tour when they come through.

The "lead" bass sounds so much like Hooky's that it's possible the same pedals were used, even if not of the same brand.

Interesting article all in all, but Barney and the band get a mention. Barney popped in on him mid interview to say hello at one of the shared dates they played; and then Robert talked about watching them from the side of the stage. His comment about them missing something with no Hooky was funny and echo'd many sentiments on here. Robert said something to the effect, pointing at Gallup "He and I got over each other, they could too." Pretty funny commentary from the man who may have had more drummers than Spinal Tap....

Cure have had 13 official members, I think. Not that it matters. Sounds like the two bands get on, which is for the best. Inter-band rivalry is boring!

Sorry to revive all this crap again but The Cure were on the radio yesterday and it reminded me of this thread and how lacking in logic Fat Bobs comments were. You'd have to say that The Cure were hardly innovative in what they did, never really pushed any boundaries, wheras New Order were. They both enjoyed huge success either way but I cannot imagine New Order hearing any Cure songs and wanting to imitate it wheras Fat Bob and his sticky up haired mates must have heard New Order and thought, fuck me, thats different.

You would think that Robert Smith would have out grown that Jo Brand look which he has been sporting since the mid '80s, he actually looks pretty scary nowadays but I think were a decent band and they had a unique sound in their day.. He must be a bit of a tyrant though with all those ex-members knocking about..

I remember reading a long time ago that in actual fact The Cures' recording contract isnt a band contract at all. Smith has the contract with the recording company and then the other members of the group are sort of employed by him. It could be quite a common practice for all I know but its sounded kind of strange at the time.

Reminds me of an interview that Stephen Morris did with Swedish music magazine Slitz back in 1988. I can't remember the exact quote, but it was something like: "I'm not bitter, but we could put on the latest Cure album to see how many New Order covers we can spot".

Imagine if N.Order did a 34 song, 160 minute show like The Cure. We might be all bored. But consider it.
