Hooky to Play Movement & PCL Live in Janaury 2013

I'm up for it, especially if he beefs up the albums with singles from the period. Take Movement, for many their worst album, for Bernard barely an album at all - yet flanked by two of their best 45s, 'Ceremony' and 'Temptation'. In fact I was hoping he'd get round to it earlier instead of retreading Unknown Pleasures AGAIN.

The other show drops - Hooky to play Movement and Power Corruption & Lies in January 2013.....

I get and appreciate the Joy Division albums. I have no desire to hear him or Rowetta try signing Barney's vocals, especially on the PCL tracks....

Should imagine Hooky can easily match Barney's vocals on Movement. Most of us could. 😄

Pottsy in for the PC&L stuff? [clown]

If anything, it'd be nice to hear Ultraviolence live again.

Now, the question is, will he play the roaring, bass-dominated 1982 version of 5-8-6, or the slightly wimpy one from the album?

You having a fucking laugh, while I respect his right to do what he wants, the thought of him murdering temptation turns my stomach.

That is Bernards fucking masterpiece and he should leave it alone

He should have quit while he was ahead with the joy division stuff to be honest especially when new order are actively gigging now.

another thing is that its been suggested the light are not doing any new material because of the inevitability of it being given away for free on the internet but that doesnt seem to concern or stop new order from releasing new material in the future?

what exactly is the thinking of the hooky camp?

The thinking is "cash in" everyday, everytime. I can't see this as doing a proper tribute.

I've touched on this in another thread, but it is worth repeating. This is a horrific idea. Hooky really needs someone to sit him down and tell him NO. This is doing him no favours at all.

He looks more uncomfortable as a frontman than Bernard, wearing his bass and holding his right arm out as he sings. This pissing match/hissy fit has gone on too long. 😕

Cashing in is the by product, if i had a guess at what is happening in camp hooky he would be outlining how we are a bunch of internet wankers who dont know what we are talking about (some serious musicians post on this site im sure but anyway) and the punters keep coming to the gigs so stuff them. Id also imagine a fair amount of yes men involved happy to make a few quid on the nostalgia tours and not having a quiet word with hooky for fear of rocking the boat.

its a pity that hooky is in this particular situation but to be honest im happy that new order is gigging and releasing new material and i suppose thats what really matters ultimately.

Got to admit I didn't really think he would move on to the NO albums, I thought that was a bit of a bluff. I suppose all artists who play gigs for anything more than £0.00 are doing it for the money to some extent, but I can't help thinking that this is really about Hooky wanting to do things his way rather than in the shadow of Bernard. Freebass didn't exactly set the world on fire so doing JD/NO stuff is probably the most effective way of getting people to come and see you. And as Mr Hook has I think acknowledged in the past, JD/NO is the best stuff he's done (as opposed to the side project bands).

The idea of doing a complete album like PCL is bound to appeal to some who consider themselves true fans, rather than the casual hit-chasers. I just wish it was the original four members of NO that were doing this. I'm not going to stump up for this but I imagine if I won myself a pair of free tickets I'd pop along out of curiosity if nothing else.

I have difficulty imagining Hooky singing some of those songs.... I'm not interested at all, but it's a bit odd considering that New Order (or at least 3/4 of the original lineup) are performing some of those songs too. (Especially from the PC&L era. ) I suppose some fans want to hear both, but I think this current lineup of New Order can perform some of the songs better than Hooky plus other musicians. At least in New Order's case, there's 3/4 of the original lineup, including the singer.

Didn't Hooky say something like the current New Order touring is like Queen without Freddie Mercury? Although The Light aren't calling themselves New Order, they will tour with only one original member (and that member wasn't the singer), even when the rest of the members are alive and well performing as New Order. I don't mind karaoke...but when an ex-member tours like this, it's odd, IMO.

Yes as with the past 3 times we've played a record for the first time at the Factory (UP, Closer & Still), the ticket price includes a donation to mental health charity Mind & Forever Manchester which is a great local charity putting lots of great stuff back into the community.

This of course is always overpowered and buried by the tiresome cries of "cash in! cash in! cash in!", which is pretty ridiculous considering the humongous gigs you've seen them rest of them doing over the past year that at times absolutely dwarfed ours. It's not a cash in, it's simply a musician who loves nothing more than playing live, wanting to play the music he helped create to anyone that would like to hear him do that. If no one wants to hear it, then that's fine, but it turns out people do and are excited, so we promise to give them a fantastic show that we will put our absolute all into & have already started working on 4 months in advance. I really hope to see some of the doubters at a gig so we can attempt to change your minds. The Cathedral gig in particular should be a great evening, cheers.. [:)]

I for one will be there. It is strange that there will be new order and the light both doing gigs but anyone who witnessed the Joy division gigs will know hooky will put his heart and soul into his. The movement album is forgotten by the others but sounds great live or on peel session. Hooky sings 2 of the trax anyway and his voice is more suited to this album than Barneys. Earlier this year hooky did a great job at Buxton playing a couple of movement tracks as well as ceremony. Pc&lies is my all time favourite album but Barneys voice has come into its own on this album making this more of a challenge so it will be very interesting to hear this especially with all the electronics. When r the tickets on sale?

Jack, do u have any idea when or if lost sirens will be released:) I for one am looking forward to hearing unheard new order songs. Not expecting an answer as lawyers involved but you never know.

Great stuff on the charity jack but the comment re the others doesn't make sense. They are New Order and simply plying their trade so not surer how it can be classed as cashing in as its there songs with the majority of key performers?

Usual old "Come see the gigs and we'll blow you away" crap. Not interested in the gigs, because the idea is vastly unappealing and only very tenuously linked to the material. Sure, Hooky helped create it, but he didn't sing it. It would be like seeing "Jason Newsted sings '.... And Justice For All'".

Whilst it may all be sunshine and light in Camp Hooky, here's what some of the comments on my FB feed say. This is what people are thinking.

"Fucking hell. As if doing Unknown.Pleasures wasn't bad enough..."

and

"Hooky has officially lost the plot and all of his dignity now. Will someone please put me out of my misery. I actually defended this guy through thick and thin prevously. Lordy do I feel like a fucking idiot."

and

"Is he going to move on to the Electronic back catalogue after this ?"

The comments under the Slicing Up Eyeballs post carry a similar flavour :http://www.slicingupeyeballs.com/2012/09/20/peter-hook-performs-movement-power-corruption-lies/

Doesn't matter if the gigs are any good or not. Most curious / interested people seem to think this is not a great idea. Nonetheless, we're all sad old internet wankers reading webpages about bands they like whilst most other people probably aren't interested. Not at all the kind of people that bands needs as an audience.

There was a time I'd fly across the world to see him play bass. I wouldn't walk 10 minutes across my local park and see him for free, but no more than that now. I'm not interested in tribute acts.

Oh my good god, have just read this on his web site

Alongside the performances of the albums in full and in sequential order, which has become one of the hallmarks of The Light’s live performances to date, the band are also set to revisit the many classic singles of the 1981 to 1983 including “Ceremony”, “Everything’s Gone Green”, “Temptation” and “Blue Monday” which New Order generally refused to include on the albums, considering the LP’s should stand alone in comparison to the single releases.

Now this is taking the fucking piss, is he trying to completely ailienate himself from everyone. I have no doubt that the Light could pull off JD stuff and possibly Ceremony and EGG but Temptation - no fucking way and he will make him self look a complete twat if he even tries.

I think that what Peter Hook is proposing to do here is risky but I for one hope it doesn't turn out badly for him..

As Movement is already quite Joy Division-esque, I don't think The Light will have much difficulty pulling it off especially as they've done a couple of the tracks live already. In fairness I imagine The Light could play a song like Dreams Never End miles better than the current line-up of New Order ever could. On the other hand, PC&L will be interesting, they could play the music perfectly but if the vocals aren't right... can't really see Hooky ooo-ooo-oooo-ing through the end of Age of Consent. Is someone else stepping up to the microphone for the higher vocal songs? Pottsy perhaps?

In all honesty, I'm still a bit uncomfortable about the whole relentless nostalgia thing but will probably go to see them do New Order material at least once just as I saw UP at least once before forming an opinion. I would rather hear some new material though and would happily pay for it. For those decrying Hooky for what he's doing, I'd even agree with you up to a point but it's getting a bit tiresome reading the same rants time and again. Those same rants probably had a point when he started doing this two years ago but now just seem a bit redundant.

Don't think an Internet message board's gonna change his mind at this late stage.

In the main I agree but when he starts playing Temptation, the whole thing is plain wrong. Its a New Order anthem being played on the current tour by 3 of the original musicians.

As I said before no issue with the JD or movement but Temptation is a step to far in my opinion. What he hoping to gain or is it just to piss his ex band member off.

At the beginning of all this I hoped they could put everything aside and get the whole team back together but HE seems to want to drive a bigger wedge between them.

Its clear from the start he thought NO would fail without him, however it hasn't!

If you guys were doing the 'Best of Hooky' - some NO / JD tracks in which his performance was pivotal, plus the highlights from Revenge, Monaco and even Freebass - I would agree with you. Would be a boon for his credibility and all jokes about Freebass aside, you'd be able to put together a more than decent set. Man, charity or no, this is heading towards Beach Boys Family and Friends levels of discomfort...

I know the comment on the link on the first post was from a cut and paste job, but the whole “go on to New Order and annoy Bernard even more.” shtick is sounding more than a bit sad - is Bernard annoyed that him and the rest of New Order are doing shows around the world while Hooky is playing "very special venues that have been hand picked" i.e. places in the UK that they can only expect to sell a few hundred tickets to punters?

I'm not 100% up on the royalty rights to playing songs live that other people have written, but will Bernard (and Stephen, and Gillian) also be annoyed at getting paid for Peter and The Light performing the songs that they have co-written live?

Don't get me wrong, I've met Peter and found him perfectly decent but this whole thing about getting one up on Bernard is starting to become a bit desperate, he's full of his legal action shtick when New Order start touring, but how would he feel if they decided to do the same to him touring Movement and PCL?

Bollocks Jack, your petty New Order Now is boring - its New Order without Peter Hook and they are pulling big crowds wherever they play. And the some people do like New Order and don't is 90% in favour which has shocked Peter. People don't forget and his initial comments re its like Queen without Freddie are not forgotten and have made him look pretty silly.

Like everyone else I had a lot of time and respect and I too have met Peter, but he has fucked me and a lot of other people off with his antics and has probably robbed us all of seeing the original New Order including Gillian ever again.

I was lucky enough to see JD twice - so I will not come and see a light show as I have seen the original just like I won't come and see you wreck Temptation as again I have seen the original and the most recent gigs without the original bass player.

In those cases, Jason either a) hadn't left the band or b) the singer couldn't sing due to injury or c) he guested amicably with the band after leaving. Also Jason sang 1-2 songs per show to rest James voice as Metallica sets were often over 3 hours. Jason didn't take off and launch his own rival tours a couple of years after quitting. It's a false equivalence.

It is interesting that none of the points raised or criticism levelled is actually tackled. I understand the whole "I' don't wanna argue" position. But when a LOT of people think this is a, to put it politely, unwise idea, it might be that a) they're right and b) the mood of the public isn't with you. Also, I'm not sure these performances can logically be defended as artistically valid. I'm sure many of the people who go to the gigs will have a great time. But to me, that's like fucking your ex. It may feel good. But it's not necessarily right.

Then again, some things do feel great that aren't necessarily wise. As I have said many times before, write/release/tour new music and I'll be there supporting it. Become a tribute act to yourself and I won't. There seems to be a huge blind spot around Camp Hooky regarding how other people interpret these shows and how this tarnishes the Hook brand. JD I understood : there is no JD. NO albums? There's already one New Order. This is more like "Robbie Williams Sings Take That & Party". Many people are joking that Hook will be touring Electronic, The Other Two, or Bad Lieutenant.

No one owns these songs : not Hooky, Barney, or anyone. They belong to us as well. These songs are our memories : not just yours. These songs are part of our lives as well. And we care what happens to them.

Look, of course everyone's entitled to a say and an opinion about all of this and if that's negative then that's fine, the vibe on here is overwhelmingly negative in which case I don't see any point in me being here and getting drawn into pointless arguments... As I'm obviously going to be defending my own father to the hilt... which I hope people would understand... So it's just daft. The people that are interested in what we do know where they can find us on Facebook etc and I hope those people do enjoy the shows if they come down, as I've seen a few on here are thinking of doing. The rest of the band are fantastic players who will put everything into making it sound good. I won't be posting on here again, cheers.

May I make a minor correction? The New Order Now name would refer to their website, or their Twitter account name @newordernow, and not their band name. Apologies if you disagree, but I know I'm not the only one who knows the band name to be 'New Order'---- and not 'New Order Now', or even 'New Odour' as I've heard a certain other person say. Please feel free to disagree with the band name, after all, I guess I'm just someone behind a keyboard. [read]

In all seriousness, now that he's announced his intention to play all the albums before he gets too old to do it...

... when are the Republic shows pencilled in for? Seriously, I'm not taking the piss, it is a New Order album after all.

I have a hard time imagining The Light doing renditions of "World" or "Liar". Or maybe it'll just be the "classic" Factory era LPs?

Just genuinely wondering how playing all of New Order's albums is gonna work in practical terms.

You put it out there, you cannot expect everyone to provide an unending light of optimism.

The only reason we post here is because we care. I think, in my opinion, its more the unapologetic and brazen approach of fuck it, we don't care what you think, we're doing this anyway which is alienating key parts of the fanbase.

No one is saying they want Hooky to fall flat on his face and play to empty rooms. Every decision a musician makes, the fans will have an opinion on. Disagreeing with the artist is not always negativity. We will not be quiet or apologise for our opinions so as not to offend other people.

I am quite surprised though, if Camp Hooky, weren't self-aware enough to expect some people to think touring the old New Order albums might not be controversial. It was never my attention to drive Jack away. But one of the things I am proud of here is that it isn't a obsequious love in of ceaseless praise.

All joking aside, I wouldn't mind hearing Hooky & The Light having a go at the Electronic albums, as it's not like Bernard & Johnny are ever going to do it! The first Electronic album was really good & it would be really interesting to hear Hooky do songs like "Get The Message" & "Tighten Up" etc. Also, their 3rd album, "Twisted Tenderness" was less electronic & more guitar-based, so this would be right up Hooky's street.

Not so sure about the Other Two albums though!...

I've got my tickets too.

The way I see it, we've got two bands playing the music we want to hear and playing it well. I was dead against the whole Hooky plays Joy Division thing to begin with but, having seen them perform Still at The Factory this year, I've been converted. If they can give us powerful renditions of Movement and P,C&L then I'm all for it.

Whilst I'm a little dubious about the motives, I do believe that Hooky does genuinely love performing live... it's just a dreadful shame that he can't be doing it as part of New Order.

Will never happen though as that is wholly owned by Bernard and Johnny Marr

Id fucking love that although I cant think of a Freebass song Id like to hear again.

Agree, would enjoy that as well.

... when are the Republic shows pencilled in for? Seriously, I'm not taking the piss, it is a New Order album after all.

I have a hard time imagining The Light doing renditions of "World" or "Liar". Or maybe it'll just be the "classic" Factory era LPs?

Just genuinely wondering how playing all of New Order's albums is gonna work in practical terms.

Surely he will take things one step at a time, maybe the January gigs are a way of testing the waters before taking that show on the road..

As for Republic, here is a quote by Hooky on the album itself which suggests it's pretty low on his list of priorities...

Republic in particular was Bernard’s vision of what he wanted New Order to sound like. And the rest of us gave up, to be honest. That’s why Get Ready sounded more to me like a New Order record than Republic ever did.

Although I could imagine him doing Regret and Avalanche...

Quite honestly I don't understand why everyone's so up in arms about all this. Ever since the Light became a full-time project Hooky's publically toyed with the idea of doing all his albums and both Movement and Power Corruption and Lies have been specified. Movement should be fairly plain sailing as he sang a quarter of it first time round (including its only boner - tee hee - fide classic), they've already played some live this year and Bernard's vocals had yet to become inimitable. And yeah, PC&L/Temptation are potentially risky - maybe that's why they haven't announced a full tour? - but we said that about UP and I've yet to read a crap review. I'm sure musicians of this calibre wouldn't tackle an album of such status unless they knew they could do it justice. So yeah, I'm up for it. Come back to Rome, boys! PS Republic isn't QUITE as bizarre a prospect as it first appears. Remove Avalanche which is ultimately The Other Two and exactly half the songs were played on the '93 tour (Regret, RIAD, World, Ev Ev, Special). And while Hook's low is the final mix he probably had more to do with the pre-Hague versions, plus he spends most of the gigs singing rather than playing. In fact singing and playing bass around it may be paradoxically just right for him! PPS I fucking hate Republic, especially Liar.

Thing is.

PC&L, in particular, has some great tunes. Once you've heard Hooky sing them, you'll have that (sh1t) version in your head and you won't be able to get rid. So forever more, when you hear those songs, you'll have Hooky's voice competing with the original.

Not good.

Best not to hear the cover versions in the first place.

Completely agree. Many people on this board (inc me) have seen reorder so why can't hooky sing the new order albums. Ultimately going to a gig is about having a good time. I go to lots of gigs and the light is ALWAYS a great night out. I,ve got my tickets for manchester and I know hooky wil put his heart and soul into this. We,ve never had it so good in years with all this new order related activity. I like anyone else would sooner they were all friends but that is just not going to happen.

I can understand this point of view. This is what I said when I heard, for example, that George Michael was covering Toothache. I worked hard and am pleased to say that I have not heard it to this day.

If years as music fans have taught us anything it's not to concentrate on the worst aspects of a performance.

The vocals at a Light gig are like the harmonica at the end of Idiot Wind or the fact that Kelly Brook can't cook; not really what you should be concentrating on. They're not the point.

Hooky makes one of the best sounds in rock and roll and he'll be doing it over some of his songs. I'll go and see that.

You say that but these days Im finding it easier and easier to block out things coming from his mouth. Did he say he'd written a book or something?

I've booked a couple of tickets for the London show as working in the smoke at the moment. Looking forward to DNE and Doubts to be honest. I can see Hooky doing a pretty decent Denial too.

Never had such a problem fortunately!

Movement and the early early songs I understand, Barney's as well as disowned them anyway - and it would be a pity if noone played them ever again. DNE especially. PCL just doesn't make sense really - it's not like NO aren't playing songs off it, as well as BM and Temptation. But hey, we're grown ups, make our choices etc etc.

You're comparing The Light to ReOrder ?! [:eek] 😂

Says it all.

Just ordered by ticket for the Cathedral. My only chance to see Movement/PCL songs being played live. Can't see New Order doing them...

It will be interesting to hear his take on AoC. Hope he plays it faster like in the 80s.

Current incarnation of New Order has been playing 25% of PCL (including AoC) at virtually every gig since last year.

This is fun!

We are getting best of both worlds here and we can fill our diaries watching both! I remember the wilderness years where everyone was desperate for new order shows but they played so infrequently it was a pain

Just suck it up and enjoy the ride.

Go if you want and stay away if you want

Any new order is better than no new order at all

I still think this is a bad idea. If Hooky ever wants to reconcile with Barney this is the directly opposite way to do it.

Saying that though, The Light's instrumentation has been heavenly - it's just a shame that Hooky's vocals will spoil it ALTHOUGH Rowetta would be even worse - She has a great voice, but it's waaaaay toooo operatic for New Order.

The ideal vocalist would be a geezer called Bernard Sumner - If they got him to join the group, then WOW that would be something.

Changing me mind about this. Although I'd much rather see NO with or without Hooky do both lps I'd go see Hooky and The Light do it. Both fave albums and important part of my life. I do not think Hooky would embarass himself on stage. No one else is doing it.

Bring it to Chicago!
