world in motion vs. vindaloo

i was just looking over the words to 'world in motion' and i was so embarassed for the band i nearly crawled under the desk. however, i realize keith allen played a part in creating these tragic lyrics, so i must pose the question: do his lyrical abilities improve in 'vindaloo'?

i believe so. even though the latter is rather simplistic, i find it to be wittier than 'world in motion'. perhaps this is due to allen's collaboration with that other member of the groucho fraternity: the dashing, floppy-haired alex james. and the video was refreshingly free of mullets.

or maybe they're both just crap songs.

The lyrics to World In Motion were a product of their time. And what a fookin great time it was! Happy, loved up nonsense. A great theme tune to a great summer. "World In Motion", "One Love" by the Roses and "Killer" by Adamski all came out within about a month of each other. Ace.

Vindaloo is also brilliant. Especially the video

Still love it now. It was the highlight of Finsbury for me.

I think 3 Lions just shades it over WIM for best football song, after all 3 Lions still gets sung with customised lyrics on the terraces every Saturday.

I also like the England United one from Euro 2000, How Does It Feel (To Be On Top Of The World).

3 Lions grapple WIM to no.1 football chant of all time, although I never imagined WIM could be beaten. 3 Lion bars now making WIM sound more dated ... which is a shame. Still, quality beats quality which is always nice.

I always saw 3 Lions as more of a plea for sucess after being arse for 30 years, rather than an expectation that we would actually win anything.

You could argue that the classic couplet "And we'll really shake 'em up, when we win the World Cup, coz Scotland are the greatest football team" embodies that "we're gonna win" sentiment! ;)

Yeah, but everybody knows that it's so implausible......

I have to confess to being ignorant of both the Fish and BA Robertson ditties. I remember one by that squirt from Gregory's Girl....the bloke with too many names. "Don't Come Home Too Soon", was it? (or "Why Bother Going At All" as some wag suggested).

WIM every time over vindaloo...during the world cup we used to frequent this little club in derby and the dj used to play wim every friday and saturday without fail...we used to go bonkers.....nowadays i get terrified at the thought of stepping on a dance floor!!!!

Yeah - although WIM might be corny as hell to listen to now (the version I have I faded out just before Barnesy's excruciating rap - so i've got what is in effect half a passable song, shorn of the rest of the bollocks) , at the time it was the overall VIBE around the World Cup that ensured its lasting success...remember as others have mentioned already on this thread, the 1990 world cup was probably the least marred by footie crowd violence - cos of all the E's being necked no doubt and everyone embracing the "loved up" zeitgeist ....! This alone gives us fond memories of the whole tournament, and coupled with glorious weather all summer, and England almost clinching it, means this was probably as good as things have got ever since '66. Compare this to 1994, or even Euro 96. When that fucking Baddiel and Skinner atrocity was inciting all sorts of rednecked xenophobic bullshit to emanate forth from terraces all round the continent. Quite a difference don't you think?

As for Fat Les's execrable "Vindaloo" (its inspired rhyming slang pun on "Enger-land" notwithstanding), it's pure moronic chant-along insidiousness endeared it to the pleb brigade, what did you friggin well expect?

and i love 'three lions'. great memories of the summer of '96...tribal gathering, mind-blowing prodigy and chem bros concerts at the brixton academy, chairs being thrown about the pub after england's tragic loss to germany....
