Who here knows what bass guitar Peter Hook uses?

his basses are custom built by eccleshall in the u.k. i think he had the first one built in 1984 they sell standard versions of the hooky's for about 1500.00 pounds and it takes 10 months to build

Gibson 335's rule - I had a 335 hollow body. It is the only style as far as I am concerned. Hook's got great taste.

Ah, a fellow Zoom enthusiast! Was it the 505, Chris? I have found the single most authentic Hooky sound this side of an ElectroHarmonix via this little ripper - best multi-effects unit going for guitar OR bass IMHO. CTB

I went to www.eccleshallguitars.co.uk/ last night but the site was down, I also looked at the Gibson model. Not bad, there is also the Jack Cassidy bass but it looks like the pickup on it would be a little to thin for my taste. I may just stick to my Ibanez Sr480 it sounds good enough. I just wanted that hollow body sound plus I love the look of a hollow body. :)

i e-mailed eccleshall a while back and they do have pickup upgrades

the only problem with the gibson made 335 basses is that they havent made them for years and when you find one thts in pretty good shape they cost a hell of a lot of money

Guess I'll just hope and pray that Gibson comes out with another semi hollow body bass like the older ones. Til then I'll keep playing my Ibanez. I thought about getting a Fender Pbass too.

i play a fender jazz, well i have one but the stock pickups are crap and i need to save fro new ones(divorced two kids, child support, yikes!!!!!) i have a steinberger as well it sounds great but playing live i look like im playing a spoon(im a big guy) there is also this stingray 5 string ive had my eye on

The stingray is a very good bass, I don't own one but I have played with a few in the past and it had a sweet tone coming from it. :) I also thought about geting a Musicman but I may op for a Gibson T bird instead. :D

Don't under estimate the pick-up. I've got a Jack Casady. The pick-up, for a passive, has got more power than the 2 EMG active pick-ups on my Hohner bass.

It's also got a lovely tone. Can't recommend it highly enough. Best bass for look and sound I've ever owned.

If you're saying you love the sound, and by that you mean what you hear on studio recordings, then it's a yamaha bb12, if you mean what you hear live it's the eccleshall 335 (based on the gibson 335 but with yamaha electrics) and if you mean the 6 string then it's a shergold marathon 6, and you'd have more luck finding hens teeth in rocking horse shit than finding one of them!

as for effects, if you can't find an electro harmonix clone theory, original 70's model, then a boss super chorus is not bad, if you're after a JD style sound use a bit of distortion too.

Remember this thread coming up recently. If you want to sound like Hooky a Yamaha BB164 with a zoom B1 is as good as anything, use E9 and wack up the crunch and your almost there.

However, sounding exactly like Hooky may be a bit of a waste of time. Pursuing a low cost alternative and cocking about a little often produces interesting results. His whole bass sound is an accident anyway - its evolution realised by the poor equipment they were using during JD.

So does anyone here actually have an eccleshall? And if so, can you post pix of it here?
