Okay, let's make our points here.

Mine being that several years ago when the notion of a boxed set began, Hooky said the idea was to get all the vinyl 7" and 12" versions of the New Order singles on to CD for the first time.

Now, I know that a complete release of all the singles on CD would span several discs and be too pricey for a viable release (the reason for the ditching of the original 'Recyclyed' project), but this set is too lenghty to interest potential or casual New Order fans, and has too many album tracks to appeal to the die hards - other than the fact that most of us will buy it simply because we are completists.

Going through the tracklisting (with the running times) there are, in fact only two tracks which cannot be already found on CD (live disc excepted). These are the 'Confusion' 12" and the remix of 'Paradise' (originally on the 'True Faith Austrailian remix 12" in 1987. Even the 'Temptation' original can be found on the Canadian CD version of '1981-1982', and the Sabres mix of 'Regret' on a Japanese CD single, so anyone who has been collecting New Order releases for a decade or so could easily have track down these so-called 'rarities' in a digital form already, if they looked hard enough (as I did).

I just managed to get hold today of the CD soundtrack to the film 'Something Wild' which features an edited version of the 'Temptation' seven inch - I guess this will be the closest I ever get to a digital version (without vinyl crackle, anyway) of the original 7" now!

On seeing the original box set tracklisting (before the list above with the running times was avaiable), the best we could have hoped for was that tracks such as 'Everything's Gone Green', 'The Perfect Kiss', 'Bizarre Love Triangle', 'Ceremony', 'Blua Monday' and a few others would be the 7" or 12" versions which haven't already featured on compilation CDs (such as the original un-Gillian version of 'Ceremony'). Hell, even 'Round & Round' has a different American edited album version which could have been chucked on there in the place of the regular 'Technique' version, just as something a completist might not have heard/owned.

Bobby Gillespie's 'live' selection is the one saviour of an otherwise unattractive set. That disc has to be commended (in particular for the inclusion of 'Crystal' - the best live tune I heard by any artist in 2001).

However, in the light of the 'International' album also coming out, replicating almost every track on the 'Hits' box set disc, why have London not just thought to bring out a limited-edition version of 'International' with this live collection as a bonus disc? That would have satisfied most of us hardcore fans (and kept the price lower) - if they at least had the balls to stick with the first version of the 'International' track list: you know, the one that said we'd get digitally remastered versions of the un-edited 'Perfect Kiss' twelve inch and the 'Confusion' twelve inch. Now they've bottled it and decided to stick 'Round & Round' and 'Regret' (two tracks every New Order fan already has several times) on there too, we'll get the clipped about 'Perfect Kiss' (again) and the re-recorded 1987 'Confusion' (again).

If the pre-order HMV price of £16.99 is the recommended retail price, then that's not so bad for a box set, and will mean value for money for fans looking to hear more of the back-catalogue without forking out for all the albums, but I'm going to buy it just for the live disc, the 'Paradise' remix, and to finally get 'Confusion' 12" and Sabres 'Regret' on CD at last. not much to gain from a four-CD set really, is it? I'll just have to stick to making my own CDRs using my Technics 1210 and my DAT recorder.

The only advantage of this track lsiting that I can think of, is that I'll still get a buzz fromn tracking down hard-to-find vinyl, and the stuff I already have will still be sought-after, and worth more second-hand (yeah, like I'll ever sell any of it)!

I have a page which lists almost every New Order track I can think of (and which ones I'm still seeking) online which can be found by clicking here. It's only when you see the scale of the back catalogue, and what could have been picked for this set, that you realize what a cop-out and let down this set really is. I just hope they don't try to flog this lame collection to fans for more than the £17 we've been told by HMV.

Right, that's that off my chest. Now it's time to get back to remastering my own four CD set of rare stuff!

Hey Andrew! Nice list! But skipping through it, i still wonder what this "original" version of "Everything's Gone Green" should be...comparing the running times it seems to be the ordinary 12" version. But why "original" ???

Just the 'original' in the context it was the first recorded version, I'd imagine - the seven inch being clipped at the start and faded at the end - even though the 12" was the second version to be released.

If you check the 'Touched By The Hand Of God' on the set, you'll see that says 'original version' when in actual fact it's the Arthur Baker remixed seven inch. The true 'original' is the 5:01 long version on the 'Salvation!' soundtrack album. There's often wrong mix names on releases like this. Just chek the promo '20 Years Of New Order' Qwest CD album for a track listing with virtually every mix title being incorrect!

Everyone everywhere??? ... a classic hit? maybe it is just me, but i can barely remember it, and i can't hardly wait for the remastered Slow Jam (sarcasm)... i guess they throw Brutal on there for those who did not buy the soundtrack, the mp3 was enough for me at the time...

the set does not seem to really cover the great unique 80s pop genius of NO very well at all...no Age of Consent, The Village, Love Vigilantes, Sub-Culture, Thieves Like Us, Weirdo, Paradise, Run, All the Way, though it does contain the beautiful original Bizarre Love Triangle... no early Denial either

the set does not seem to be near a complete collection of the dance floor heritage/ 12" stuff, though it has some a lot of nice toons... some quite missing

the set does not try to have any rare/ alternate views type stuff at all, just a few remixes. i've always enjoyed the Peel session of 5.8.6 and Turn the Heater On quite a lot, they could have added something like that...

They don't :( This is just a complete fucking (bad)joke, this box set. What is the point in releasing all this, unless it is purely a contractual obligation that will free them from London Records. Let's hope it is the latter, and they can get back to being innovative and not tied by record company strings (which I'm convinced is the real reason for the "same set every night" farce and the very dodgy release schedule.

i first saw the cover on one of the threads here (cuz that's where i get a lot of NO news first) and i thought someone was pulling a joke. then, i realised it was serious.

the cover is fucked. really really fucked. i cannot see even a hint of peter saville in it. who the hell designed it? it looks sleazy, like an infomercial is selling it. and what's with the disco ball and the eagle? that is SSSOOOOO UN-NEW ORDER LIKE! eagle? what, is new order patriotically american? common! don't make me laugh. and the disco ball?!??!!! i don't remember NO being fans of disco...they were never part of the disco scene. it's just laughable.

i really don't want to buy the box set. i'll probably download what i want from winmx or something. exactly what the record company doesn't want, but what can you expect when you screw us fans over for so long?

A BIG, BIG DISAPPOINTMENT, ESPECIALLY WHEN COMPARED TO THE JOY DIVISION BOX. IN THE LAST FEW YEARS THE JAM HAVE HAD A BOX SET OF ALL THEIR TRACKS RELEASED, AS WELL AS ALL THEIR ALBUMS REMASTERED, 2 BOX SETS OF ALL THEIR SINGLES ON CD, A 3 CD SET OF BBC SESSIONS AND A DOUBLE DVD OF THEIR TV APPEARANCES AND VIDEOS RELEASED.SO WHY DO NEW ORDER FANS GET SUCH POOR TREATMENT?

the only disc I had real hope for is the live one; however, it leans toward the later stuff, the only reasonably early track is a crappy version of in a lonely place. Now that I know just to laugh at this box when I see it in stores, I'm glad they saved me some money.
