Do threads automatically get deleted after x amount of time or did a moderator delete the "And yet another round of new order spotting" thread?
I spotted that the documentary film, Mistaken For Strangers (about The National on tour) is on Film Four in the UK late tonight. If I remember correctly someone spotted the band listening to AOC on the trailer below - at around 1.28 - when the film came out last year. So I was going to respond to that post. But I can't find the post or the thread...
I've no idea where it is actually. I've done a search/browse and only found the Facebook spotting one. Are you sure there ever was one on the new forum?
I'm pretty sure I'm the only mod bothering to keep an eye on here at the moment and all I remove is the Nike/Passport spam generated by the bots.

I'm positive. The AOC spot mentioned above was within the last year, as the film came out in 2013. I couldn't be more positive.

Anyone seen the current Denzel Washington flick The Equalizer?
I was quite surprised to hear New Dawn Fades blasting out in one of the final scenes of the movie. Alas it's the Moby version not JD.
The film takes itself very seriously but it kicks ass if you like that vigilante stuff (and funnily enough also stars Chloe Grace Moretz from Kick Ass - another vigilante film, albeit tonally very different).
In Simon Reynolds' Energy Flash book i'm reading at the moment ( it's a history of dance culture) a section about the Goa beach party scene of around late 90s early 2000s Reynolds says how some DJs would often play the dub non vocal versions of New Order singles.Interesting to learn.Didn't name which ones though.

The weekend before last Black Rivers (a new offshoot of Sub Sub/Doves) were doing a live session for Dermot O'Leary's Radio 2 show and he asked them how they solved the issue of who ended up singing in the bands they've been in. Jez Williams answered that they went with the "Rob Gretton school of thought" where they just did it themselves "like New Order". Rob of course was a champion of Sub Sub and Doves so it makes a lot of sense. Jez even attempted a grizzled impression of Rob while he explained. Wasn't expecting it during the session but a nice little nod to their past...

Ok then, lets try a new approach just for you. I don't give a crap where I heard this track. But it deserves to be heard anyway. It's a remix of Your Silent Face, and unlike most unofficial efforts it actually isn't crap. It's good enough to be played out by a well known DJ. If you haven't heard this remix, you probably should do. Oh there's a download option there too.
Not 'exactly' New Order - but is that Arthur Baker DJing with who I'm assuming is George Clinton at Glastonbury on BBC2 right now - haven't seen Arthur since he DJ'd at the Brixton Academy shows about 14 years or so ago but I can't think there's that many people rocking that look.

Watched Music for Misfits: The Story of Indie with my girlfriend. Right after, she was eager to watch American Horror Story: Hotel (she's a Lady Gaga fan). The episode began with two Swedish women checking in to a hotel to the soundtrack of Joy Division's The Eternal. They played at least a minute of the track but stopped short of Ian's vocal. Watched the whole episode with her just to see what else was played (Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus and, er, She Wants Revenge).

Episode 2 of American Horror Story: Hotel. Incidental/soundtrack music featured more heavily. However, a good portion of In a Lonely Place was set to a series of scenes towards the beginning of the show.
There was also some Bryan Ferry played during a fashion show, Chic played during a '70's flashback and Siouxsie played during a sex/murder scene.

'Komakino' featured in documentary film I just watched 'B-Movie: Lust & Sound in Berlin', starring Mark Reeder, Factory Records' German representative. Great film by the way, also featured some footage of NO I haven't seen before. Highly recommend!
The Game instrumental featured on SkySportsF1 coverage of the Austin, Texas race. It was used on the Race show during a recap of the Qualifying sessions.
They used Restless during a montage a couple of races back. A no-brainer considering the car and pretty girlfriend lyrics.
Too bad about tonight's result, MUFC. There's always some good music on the Old Trafford playlist though. Track 9 on the list looks familiar.

I have a trio of Lou Reed albums done in 3D binaural sound: Street Hassle, Take No Prisoners (Live) and The Bells. The live album sounds the most interesting with headphones on. It sort of makes you feels like you're sitting in the back table of a murky dive bar with a bunch people drinking around you.

Of all the JD/NO related shirts I've owned over the years, I've always tried to avoid this one due to how popular it's become. Not that I dislike the fact that more people are sporting JD's legacy out in public, but the fact that it's gotten to where other bands and marketing companies have been created parodies of it bothers me a bit. Plus the image on the original LP wasn't nearly as huge. The smaller size in relation to the rest of the LP cover made for very stark and minimal piece of art. 99% of the shirts I see people wearing have it totally super-sized.

Mark Reeders' B Movie: Lust & Sound In Berlin has had a couple of brief mentions on the forum previously. However it seems the film has only just had it's UK premiere. A bit weird considering you can already buy it on Amazon. And there's an expensive book too. I may have to spring £13 for the DVD.

Instrumental piece from "Restless" being played under continuity links on BBC1 recently. I guess the New Order fan in the BBC (whoever he or she is) is still very much an influence on the selection of these little musical interludes.
In kind of a reverse spotting - I was playing Music Complete at my cafe and a new employee asked me if this was New Order. He knew it was Bernard but didn't recognize the song. I told him about the album, etc. Turns out he is from Manchester and has been in the States for 6 years. Now we chat about music any time he comes in to work.

This past Saturday I was in WALMART in New Jersey a very similar store like TESCO in UK and they were playing LWTUA in the background, so shocked I heard it in a place like that and it made me happy.
This programme The Secret History Of My Family on BBC2 now has had JD 'Walked In Line' and 'Disorder' and New Order 'Murder' and 'Ceremony' (first version) and also some of that old recording of talking used by Grant Gee at the beginning of his JD doc. Used to similar effect in this programme as footage of old Salford is used. The programme is about families in Salford talking about their ancestors

CNN has a doc series called "The Eighties" that included the NO clip from Veronica's Countdown from 1983. That's the one where Barney is asked if he is a computer programmer or musician and he replies neither,they're bank robbers. Funny clip if you haven't seen it. Especially when Stephen gets really technical when demonstrating their synths.
Just really excited to see ANY coverage of them in U.S. Of course the episode is mostly about Madonna, Prince, etc. it was nice to see that bit and especially using such obscure footage.

Reminds me of the days before the internet. I used to have to purchase VHS tapes from record fairs and ads in Record Collector to obtain live/TV footage.

Not had a chance to listen to that soundcloud yet but i have watched the series of 8 episodes of Stranger Things on Netflix over the last 3 or 4 days.Atmosphere is in episode 4 in a scene after the lad whose disappearance kicks off the series is found dead ( well he's not actually dead as it turns out but won't spoil too much) and Elegia is in scenes in episode 5 where the kid who has "died" is his funeral and people are preparing for it.
It's a pretty watchable series.Well i ended up watching all of it so it must be good.It rips off pretty much every horror movie/tv series and Stephen King/John Carpenter et al ever made and there's lots of that old cliche American teenagers on bikes racing around trying to defeat a monster from another dimension type stuff but the kid actors and most of the adult ones are really good except for Winona Ryder who is shit in this.The series is set in 1983 and some of the scenes look like they could even have been filmed back then they're that authentic.Elegia fits in with a lot of the music in the series thouigh reallly it was released til 2 years after the series is set.

I've listened to the mix a few times now.Yep i really like it, been great on the headphones when out and about and journey to work.This week i've been having to walk for half an hour each morning to my work colleague's house to cadge a lift with him to work and we start pretty early so i'm walking to his house at 5am when it's still a bit dark so the Stranger Things tunes on DJ Yoda's mix have been kind of the perfect soundtrack for those early dark/twilight hours walking the streets! Cool how the mix starts with the clip from series with the line "I've made you a mixtape"

I bought an 80's 12" extended mixes compilation album on Friday. It features mixes from various artists including NO with The Perfect Kiss. One of the other artists featured is Swing Out, Sister with Surrender. Perhaps ironically, here is SOS with their version of "The Perfect Kiss". Swing Out, Sister are still going strong and seem to have been quite prolific over the years. Having formerly played in a brass band, I have a soft spot for any good group with a brass section.

Speaking of such things, and indeed speaking of Elegia above, I was surprised to spot the full 17 minute version of Elegia on this compilation. As no one seems to know about the other version of Elegia in the Stranger Things mixtape, I'm going to assume it's a cover by the incidental music creators, Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein. There is a volume 1 and 2 compilation of original music from Stranger Things by them but Elegia isn't on there (I guess 'cause it's not their original music).

The episode invited members of the public to share their memories, memorabilia and experiences of being fans of bands and music from 1986-1996.A guy from Manchester was showing his Hacienda pass and photos & talking about memories of the Hac and all the famous autographs he had on his Hacienda pass.Start of that section had Thieves Like Us intro.
The programme also featured a few Depeche Mode fans and confirmed my long held suspicion that fans of that band are disturbingly weird and unhinged.

FILM1 Anyone here seen The Perks Of being A Wallflower? Not the sort of film I'd go to see at the cinema. But after hearing some people rave about it, I recorded it off the TV. Correction time. Just as season two has been announced, I've finally got round to actually watching season one. It was a bit spookier than ET! Why were there massive flakes of dandruff floating in the "upside down"? I now realise that quite a lot of the music in that DJ Yoda mix is "inspired by" the show rather than in it. The second version of Elegia isn't on the Stranger Things soundtrack. It seems to be something that DJ Yoda found on youtube. Perhaps its old school 1980's video game vibe appealed. Anyway here it is. Seems to be by a guy who does a lot of "chip tunes" on youtube (converted by Sir Bukkake!).

I didn't realise the whole film was set in Berlin in 1989, just before the fall of the Berlin Wall. NO's Blue Monday is indeed in there along with the cover version, but alas it's the '88 version, perhaps to tie it in with 1989 a little better. Loads of other 80's tunes in there too. Some of which I haven't listened to for ages from the likes of: Echo & The Bunnymen, the Cure, A Flock of Seagulls, Ministry, Siouxsie & The Banshees (Cities in Dust is such a good tune!), Eurythmics, Falco, Bowie, and Re-Flex's The Poitics Of Dancing which I don't think I've heard since about 1987.
And that's enough 80's for now.
The only decent 'alternative' music in series 2 of Stranger Things, IMHO, was 'Whip It' by Devo and 'Back To Nature' by Fad Gadget (wow - who would've expected that on a mainstream American TV series - a very nice surprise! RIP Frank Tovey). Most of the other proper songs used were a trifle too 'rock' for my tastes. Although I have a bit of a thing about Benatar's 'Love Is A Battlefield' (sshhh - don't tell the cool kids!).
The second series is still wonderful. Especially if you were a teenage boy in '84-85. Which I was.
To bring this back around, just seen a trailer on E4 for the latest Terminator movie. Blue Monday was used to accompany it (proper version, not a cover this time).

I can fully sympathise with him. I have watched all of series 2 and was massively disappointed with the music chosen for it, or lack of.Starts off well in episode 1 with Whip It by Devo but that's about it.Only song i really enjoyed and fitted a scene well was Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper! I won't spoil by saying which episode or scene.
I do find it hard to argue with those honest trailers.The bastards.

The idea is to provide a correct answer, but with the fewest number of correct answers provided by the public.
Anyway, the round was on song titles that contain two or more words that are the same. These words were blanked out. For instance, one question was ‘_____ _______ Me (The Beatles)’. The answer to this one was ‘Please Please Me’.
Sitting on top of the board was ‘_______ And ________ (New Order)’. Round And Round would’ve scored you a ‘Pointless’ answer i.e. a correct answer that none of the public had previously got right.
Obviously there were no fans of decent music in the people surveyed.

Soulwax did not one mix for 6 Music this Christmas but two. Both on Friday. Kinda. One was on around Midday and the other at Midnight that night (might be technically Saturday but who's counting?). Reminds me of the Chemical Brothers mix for Lauren from 2015. Can't believe that's two years ago!!

Yes it was Dick or "Richard McCourt" as he was called on the night. I believe he was spotted at the Troxy gig back in 2011. And this explains why Hooky had a tweet from Dick N Dom a while ago asking for a follow-back and a DM.
I get the feeling that the celebrity version of Mastermind is a bit easier than the regular one. Those with access to BBC iplayer can watch the New Order bit at 6mins 15secs HERE. Ok, I've edited the Stephen Morris "Synth Heroes" post above with links to the show. Funnily enough his taste in synth tune-age is pretty good!
I always thought that Barney was the driving force for electronics in the band, but listening to Disc 2 of the 'New Order presents Be Music' comp, it's fairly evident that it was Stephen and Gillian were equally as influential.

Blue Monday over the closing credits of Dress To Impress yesterday (don't normally watch such highbrow programmes at 7 in the morning but I wasn't in a rush to go to work so thought I'd take some time to watch this gem that has been stashed in the early morning schedules by ITV) - but it might be on the end titles for every episode for all I know.
Not sure if this was posted before, but was looking through Hooky's IMDB page today and noticed that he's featured in a documentary called '1599: A True Story of the Elizabethan Court '. Thought it was probably an error, but then found a trailer for it:

Oh a good one for the New Order spotters. In Ready Player One, the (excellent) new Spielberg film, the bulk of Blue Monday is played in an early scene where the two main characters go to a dance club in the Oasis. Then later, in the real life scenes, the female lead wears an Unknown Pleasures t shirt for a good bit of her screen time. In the final scene, a woman in a Technique tour T-shirt (the very type I got way back when) walks up to one of the main bad guys and mouths off to him.
Just been to see 'Ready Player One'. Pretty good film. Quite entertaining.
That Technique t-shirt is a 'blink and you'd miss it' appearance, but the JD one is very prominent. Not quite as prominent as that episode of the Limitless TV series, but still pretty good.
Blue Monday really sounded great booming out in the club. Couldn't believe how much of it they played. Was kind of expecting that they would fade it out before the vocals kicked in. Was pleasantly surprised that they didn't though.
Interesting thing about Ready Player One. It actually takes place in the city I grew up in, Columbus Ohio. The author of the book lived in Columbus in the 80's and 90's and his books are filled with Columbus references, street intersections, ect. The writer is also apparently a big New Order/Joy Division fan, so I'd imagine all of the references in the film are quite intentional on the directors part as well. I've not seen the film yet.

Blue Monday really sounded great booming out in the club. Couldn't believe how much of it they played. Was kind of expecting that they would fade it out before the vocals kicked in. Was pleasantly surprised that they didn't though.

As for BM, perhaps unusually for films & TV, they skipped the opening minute of the track. So it fades in around the start of Hook's bass circa 1.16 (original 12") and it gets cut off around 4.28 with "tell me how does it feel when your heart [grows cold]" They couldn't leave it til Bernard sang the last two words? Tsh.
If I were to put my fashion police hat on, I might suggest the UP Tee was technically a vest: player one pleasures

^Yep I saw that latest David Squires one today. Quite funny but not as funny as some of his previous efforts which have had me in stitches. Squires is the king of satirical football cartoons. His story of World In Motion was great to see today though and some of the comments with JD/NO song lyrics adapted to a football theme were possibly even funnier than the cartoon.
Saw a BT fibre optic broadband advert and it had blue Monday 88 playing throughout with a girl walking the streets and people singing the lines from the song.
It even had a brief shot of a dog similar to the one from the bands video.
I thought it was pretty good.

Yesterday me and my wife were walking in Bay ridge Brooklyn and it was a really hot day in the 90's and as we were walking there was a white lady layed on in lawn chair in the hot sun on the sidewalk blasting Age of Consent by New order and I told her that I Love New Order and that song and she got so happy.

Also as I'm typing, the words New Order are currently in the top 10 trends on twitter. I think trends can vary depending on where you are in the world (London in my case) and who you follow. I'm seeing lots of people putting WIM in tweets and I imagine this may increase if you Englsih people enjoy more results like today's. Especially as you don't have an official anthem this time around.

I've just heard a bit of Transmission being used in a "playout" to an an ad break at half time during Serbia v Brazil on ITV. And my feeling is that Atmosphere (above) was on ITV as well. So both BBC and ITV have used bits of Joy Division for this World Cup. Cheerful stuff!

Yep, we watched England v Panama in the pub, a fun afternoon; seemed like we were cheering an England goal every five minutes. Though I was very drunk. Day Of The Lords before the game caught my attention! Though I was trying to make a connection what the song had to do with the upcoming match and the England team, only thing I could connect was the “Where will it end?” lyric. Where will it indeed end for England? Probably in a penalty shootout in the Colombia game on Tuesday.
If I listen at all to World In Motion it’s the b -side, kind of prefer that version now, never was completely clear on who is doing the “ You can hold and give” and “ you must defend and attack” parts etc on that version . It’s obviously on the “ My name is John Barnes, what’s yours?” and “ get round the back “ it’s Keith Allen but I never had Allen down as good voice impersonator to do those Steve McMahon, Des Walker (?)parts.
I’ve always assumed it was Keith Allen.
He can certainly do accents and seemed to be in the mood to do impressions at the time:

Yeah. That clip is quite good. The New Order bit seems to be a collection of 2-3 other clips taken from other Granada news articles during the year. I have a copy of the original programme where Steve makes various football puns, which was broadcast in February 1990. This also includes a short Sumner interview that was not included in the Christmas show. However, I hadn’t seen the Hooky or Keith Allen interview bits before so I’m not sure whether these had ever been broadcast previously.

Yep that sounds more like what happened though Hooky does have habit of making up stories.I don't have the digital version of Hooky's book and can't recall if that is in the hardback but upon flicking through Bernard's book there on page 229 is the same version of events as Hooky remembers.Bernard, like Hooky, says it's this Richard "Dickie" Chappell character; "a born again Christian" states Barney ,doing those bizzarre footballers voices for the rap on the b side. To quote Barney " So that's Dickie the Christian rapping on the b side in his lilting, fey Bath accent"
This appears to confirm my long held belief that it's not Keith Allen doing those footballer impersonations ( though it's obviously him on the "My name's John Barnes, what's yours?" and i assume him again on "Get round the back!" ?

A genius episode from Pemberton and Sheersmith. I fell for the “ live “ episode’s “ transmission fault “ hook, line and sinker at first and was about to turn it off and go to bed until I began to realise something was afoot when during the “ replacement “ clip of an older episode of the programme, A Quiet Night In, a ghostly figure appeared outside the window in a scene . I didn’t recall that being in the original airing of that episode. Confused? You’d have to watch last night’s Inside No.9 to work it out.

In new Charlie Brooker film Bandersnatch on Netflix, the computer game creator Rickman has a large Power, Corruption & Lies poster in his flat.The film is interactive though so it was entirely by chance and choice of path to take that i ended up at that scene. If I’d chosen one of the multiple other paths I might not have reached that scene. Confused? Yeah me too.
Ooh, later in the scene the main character Stefan, after taking LSD,starts manipulating the flowers on the P,C & L poster and they start swirling and changing. Whoah.

I’m never really sure about Black Mirror. Every episode I’ve tried (about 5 of them) has left me feeling underwhelmed. Some really great ideas, but, somehow, the payoff never really seems worth it to me.

Yeah not all the stories are great.The early episodes like 15 Million Merits or The Entire History Of You when it used to be on Channel 4 some years back were on the whole better than what's been on it since it went to Netflix (all or most of the series including the early Channel 4 ones are now on that).The stories since it's been on there haven't quite hit the highs of the Channel 4 ones.

Bought mine at one of the Berkeley Greek Theatre gigs in 1987. Hers probably doesn't have the tour dates listed on the back.

I think you watched this last Friday, I caught a repeat on Saturday. The thing that struck me as they performed the "original" version was: Why don't they just play this version now? It no longer sounds "so last decade" because it isn't . Forget all the remix hybrid versions, just play it 1987 style.

I couldn’t agree more. The ‘87 version was superb. Especially live, without Hague’s production, the bass and drums just sound absolutely thunderous.
