Not much of an opener to be honest. When is this available for those who pre-ordered the album?
I've just had a listen. On first impressions it doesn't blow me away, it's kind of average, but hopefully that will change after a few plays. Nice to get to hear it at last. I note that it's available digitally from tomorrow so I take it this won't be the gratis track that comes with the deluxe album set, unless the date was moved forward slightly?
1st listen = meh. *shrugs*

I was much the same after first listening to Technique - I can remember clearly saying 'mmm.... it's ok, but not as good as Low Life.'
Turned out to be a bit of a grower!

According to The Guardian "The release of Restless comes with a full remix package, available on vinyl, CD and digitally on 9 October 2015, ahead of the full album’s release on 25 September," which does not make sense.
The Quietus meanwhile report that Restless remixes will indeed be released physically on October 9th after the album?
NO official site states "Instant grat download of first single available in August." as accompanying the purchase of the box set.
I wonder then if the instant grat download will appear tomorrow as it will be available digitally from this date? It's all a bit inconclusive with regards to release dates.
Had about 5 listens and what stands out is....well....that's just it.
It doesn't stand out. It sounds like an album track to me. Not a lead single from a new album.
Vocals are pretty flat and I'm getting a bit tired of the car and getting (yet) another girlfriend lyrics. Sounds like it could do with a vocal in a higher register from Saint Bernard in the chorus and maybe a bridge added too.
Reminds me of WFTSC (which isn't a good thing for me).
I know I should be excited and shouldn't expect another True Faith or Regret or anything but it just seems a bit average to me.
I really loved the new song. But it sounds like a good album track. Perhaps weren't the better choice for a single because doesn't look that "Restless" has much potential for remixes. Anyway, to me we had a bit of a promising work.
I don't like it.The band are happy for this to be the first single???? And the album opener? Baffling. Thought my ears were clogged up the first couple of minutes as i couldn't understand or hear what Barney was singing apart from "Restless/ i've no interest/i couldn't care less"
I found the lyrics quite negative which was surprising as i thought Barney was/is quite happy with his life these days.I always seem to put myself in the shoes of someone who isn't a New Order fan when i hear a new song of theirs for the first time and imagine what they'd think of it and i just found this to be something that a lot of people would zone out of after a minute or two i'm afraid to say.Having a lyric that goes "i've got no interest" is just a turn off.
The music itself did nothing for me, it was just lame, generic....it didn't go anywhere.Nothing remarkable or catchy at all.

WTF?? It's not single material. Not bad for being somewhere towards the end of side 1 or 2 but a single? What's even there to remix? Speechless. [eek3] [eek2]
Whereas Republic & Get Ready came crashing in with a big & obviously Neworder anthems with Regret & Crystal, featuring classic Hook basslines - and you could argue something similar for Sirens & Krafty - only to then falter somewhat in the longer listen (Liar, Slow Jam, Working Overtime being but 3 citations) - they seem to have come in low here, underplaying what has been built up thus far to be a more dance / synth than guitar led album.
Thus, Restless is not a crashing Neworder anthem but it is catching the ear of those of us who like a certain something about Technique's album tracks.
Or maybe after 10 years, I'm just happy I don't find it as 'meh' as Lost Sirens.

To throw in an opinion - I love it. I was secretly hoping for more of an 80s-twinged New Order, whether it be Low-life or Technique. So far, this song, I've gotten it. And it's not that I hate WFTSC or Get Ready (in fact, I like Get Ready more than, let's say, Republic), but this sounds more like the band I fell in love with. (Dracula's Castle: Never Forget)
Do y'all think NO released Lost Sirens to fulfill a contract? I do. A new New Order album on Mute of all places? I'm pretty sure 16 year old me is shrieking hysterically somewhere.
I just listened to "Dream Attack" and continue feeling great for their return until I'm confronted with the rest of the album, hoping the rest is just as lovely.
Sounds a bit like a demo hopefully once we have it on download format through better audio systems it may improve

Ahh, cool, thanks for pointing that out. The snippet sounds like one of the lesser Spooky mixes, or of that era.
It is understated and surprising for a new order single but to be honest I fuckin love it. Gets better with every listen. One more for the fans than the casual listener.
Much like HeySquirrelPub, I'm a regular lurker on these here forums, making visits almost daily.
Upon waking up this morning, I googled New Order under the news tab and was elated to find Restless available for listen.
Instantly, I adored the song. Mr. Sumner is singing in a lower register, which I absolutely adore. The vocals are deep in the mix, allowing the pensive melancholy of the lush instrumentation to take center stage. By the second listen, I was grinning like the Joker and singing along with glee.
So - upon checking the forums - I was surprised to see the majority of opinions expressing a sense of mild (or greater) disappointment.
And that's great! I'm happy to see New Order crafting such a polarizing song. That's not a thing they often do.
This is a tough crowd! I think it is a beautiful beginning to what should be a fantastic album. I may be biased, as Technique is my favorite album, and Dream Attack is one of my favorite songs on that album, but I think this single is simply sublime, and well worth the wait.
It's a strong return. I suppose it doesn't necessarily sound like a single but singles don't mean what they used to these days. This is more of a taster for the album. It's not exactly crying out for a remix, is it? I certainly look forward to the extended version as the music sounds superb. I'm very pleased with the production as well.
I don't mind the lyrics either, as the theme is fitting for the times. I suppose this is another reason why it might not be considered "single material". While my favourite New Order lyrics tend to be about relationships as opposed to social commentary, I don't think these should be dismissed. Are people suddenly expecting Bob Dylan and William Wordsworth? Or perhaps they'd rather Barney sing about dropping an E and having a motorway penis.

Not impressed, if this is what they've chosen to release with a slew of remixes to introduce a new album I'm dreading to think what the rest of the album sounds like, it sounds like something that wouldn't stand out on the second Electronic album or a Bad Lieutenant offcut.
Actually, the more I listen to it, the more it reminds me of Lost Sirens (which is a good thing as it is their best "album" since Technique, IMHO). But that numbing lack of direction also brings to mind Bad Lieutenant (Poisonous Intent come to mind)...
It's kinda sad, NO were really a perfect album band up to 1989, after that it was hit and miss and mostly miss. Something got broken and never fixed (I still cannot overcome the title Dracula's Castle). So, yes, I'm looking forward the new album.

Despite not really being that impressed with the YouTube release I downloaded the tune from iTunes and my impression has slightly changed.
The proper version flows a lot better as it has a better song structure.
I can detect the dream attack comparison I. The bridge "how's much do you need" ("I don't belong to no one) but can't hear any loveless in it.
I think it's a pretty standard new order track. Guitars, high end bass, lush synth strings, random lyrics etc.
Definately a slow burner. At this point is say better than WFTSC, Krafty and Hellbent but not as good as Here to Stay, Crystal or Turn.
An anyone decipher the lyrics about "took a tour ********, the frisco climate wasn't good"?

Heard it a few times now, couple of beers and with headphones. It sounds great but tune wise trying to compare apples with apples (i.e. post Republic) to me it's not up there with Crystal or Krafty as a lead single. But maybe that's the point, singles now are meaningless. It's a taster of the album nothing more. I remember when Twisted Tenderness came out and they put a taster song on an NME free disc (Haze maybe?) and I was not that impressed. Album after a few listens was very good. That others really like Restless is a good sign :)

True. And even before that, when Fine Time came out I thought the LP was going to be a bit wacky. It didn't exactly portend the strength of the songwriting on Technique. If the band's work ethic had been better that summer, perhaps Fine Time would have continued the non-LP single tradition.
As it stands, New Order may just be following the Rob Gretton philosophy of not releasing the best track as the first single, "...because where do you go from there?".

But if you take that line of thinking, if you think what you've heard so far is shite, why would you want to buy an album of the same? I'm hoping the rest of the album is going to be a lot better, I'm going to the Brixton show and I know N.O.can be contrary when it comes to live shows so if they're going to do an evening of mostly new stuff, I hope its going to be semi-decent.
Hi, I used to post here around 2005-2007, but lost my login after the forum updates. Still check the topics from time to time, and I'm glad there's new music to discuss.
I think Restless is really good, and it does remind me a lot of Technique, especially the synth tones and blend of acoustic and electric guitars. There's an effortless quality to it, whereas WFTSC on the whole felt quite labored, even in its highlights. For late Barney lyrics they aren't half bad either. I see it as told from the perspective of disgruntled youths growing up under Cameron / Osborne austerity. The chords and driving rhythm recall both Dream Attack and Tighten Up. I really like the mix; there are many instrumental flourishes without the song ever feeling claustrophobic. (In particular I'm relishing the active hi hat work on Steve's acoustic kit.) Noting here that the bass is more modern and American sounding -- all of Hooky's chorus effects have been deliberately dropped, even if the verse register gives the bass a 'lead' section. Favorite instrumental moment in the Youtube mix is those synth strings at 3:02-3:04. And finally, Barney sounds much more comfortable in his wizened older man voice -- things had been getting a bit honky here and there since 2001.
I know when hearing new music by Bernard and co. there's an air among New Order fans of, "Are we just being charitable about any half decent effort, when we're all pining for some exclamatory, seismic hit?" but I don't feel like I'm trying to like Restless. I think it's rather immediate, direct yet thoughtful, and very pretty all around. It's not a classic, but it sounds close enough to optimal New Order that it's refreshing, instead of mimicking contrivances like "Jet Stream" and the like.

I haven't said I don't like it (I do, and have purchased the track), nor have said I won't buy the album.
So I soaked it in today, 20 plus listens on the drive from my house to Philadelphia for work. After many listens, I can truthfully say I like it. The lyrics could be stronger, in fact, during one listen, I tried re-writing a few couplets to see if I could improve them. Musically, it is an established act playing to its strengths - Steve's drum work, as someone else noted, is really good especially the hi-hat work; Bernard and Phil's mix of acoustic and electric guitars does recall elements of Bad Loo, but also hearken back to Technique in some ways; the strings are a nice polished addition to the mix; and finally Gillian's keyboard work and programming meshes well into the final mix. It has a lot going on in it for sure, but would echo earlier comments that it does not feel claustrophobic at all. As for me, the outro is brilliant -- it really soars and has an energy to it that portends well for the album as a whole in my opinion.
As for the "Is it a single?" debate, I for one no longer believe in the myth of a big lead single in the current music model, especially with established bands like New Order. They have an established market and new listens come in different ways, i.e. not from music videos or traditional radio play. You seek out music you like and check things that seem interesting to you whether its via Spotify, Apple Music or some other music streaming service. A new track from New Order will get spun on various 'stations' or recommended new mixes for consumers. The band chose a song and put it into the world -- call it a single or an InstantGrat track to appease the hardcore fan's interest. I look at other established artists such as The Cure, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, etc. Can anyone really name their last singles? Probably not, because the single simply does not matter anymore.
To the casual fan, this song has the hallmarks of a New Order track....and it's new, so that alone may pique their interest. All of us already pre-ordered the album, the band need not worry about us. Of course, they want us to like it, to share it, to tweet about it. I have and will. As for the album, we will all find that favorite track -- even the people who hated WFTSC found that one track. I'll take a new album with solid music from my favorite band any day over something else.

I really like it after a few listens. Easily better than anything off WFTSC. The car/girlfriend line does annoy me slightly but there has been much worse. The production is pretty good too, classic NO sounds meshing really well and another round of applause for Steve, bloody great drum work!
I must admit i'm a bit concerned about the 'dance' production on some of the rest of the album, it may be fine in context but some of those snippets sounded a bit too plastic. If you know what i mean?! Wish they'd break out the old analog synths. That shit low synth hum, used on this track at the start and liberally on WFTSC is crap!!
Apart from that though, all good! Sure it'll be fine!
No ones really mentioned Hooky much, would it be much better with him on it? I don't really think it would sound massively different, maybe just a slightly louder chorusier bass! I'd love to know what he makes of it.

I doubt it's Gillian. The funny thing about NO songs is they normally sound 'meh' first time around but you get into 'em gradually. I'll put this on heavy rotation and get back to you after the wankend... I thought Singularity was stronger but maybe it was too epic for a single. I remember 'Make It Happen' was mooted as a trailer single but it was too long and the edit lost the ooomph, so they settled for the comparative safety of 'Vivid'. Let's think positive. After listening to the song for the past 2 days so many times it is a very good song and it grows on you after a couple of listens, i like the single shorter version that the longer one. I would give the song 3.75 out of 5 stars.
I bought the single from the US Amazon store but I like the UK shorter single version more and it is not avaiable in the US , does any one know how I can get the restless single version, if the US Amazon store had it I would definately get it I don't mind paying money for anything by NO but it is not available no where besides the UK store, can someone help me out with it, Thanks
Got my head around the song a bit more now.Downloaded the longer version.It's ok but still trying to get my head round why they would choose this as first single/trailer whatever you want to call it.I mean if it's more of a trailer for the album as opposed to a " first single from the album" you still think they'd of chosen something that grabs the attention more on first listen but maybe their intentions will become more apparent in time. Why they chose Chris Evans' Radio 2 breakfast show for the exclusive first play is something that i'll never understand.It's a foregone conclusion that Evans would talk his inane crap over the intro and then cut it off after a couple of minutes to talk more shite.And that's exactly what he did - I looked up the show Restless was premiered on iplayer radio catch up.Can't imagine his listeners would be remotely interested in a new New Order song .Truly baffling choice to give first dibs to Evans.

I'm 99% sure it is Gillian singing having vocal on bridge and chorus. Who else would it be?
Decent song 4/5. It's didn't grab me to start with but has slowly worked its way into my subconscious.

I listened to this several times during in the last couple of days. The music is great, and reminds me of WFTSC. I like the drumming and orchestration and guitars...it all sounds very very good!
What I can't however get past is the vocals. Bernard's lower register does not work on this track (although it has worked before on "Behind Closed Doors"). In certain parts of the songs, it sounds like he's about to lose his voice. Lyrically not that great either. Let's hope for better album tracks.

I bought the single from the US Amazon store but I like the UK shorter single version more and it is not avaiable in the US , does any one know how I can get the restless single version, if the US Amazon store had it I would definately get it I don't mind paying money for anything by NO but it is not available no where besides the UK store, can someone help me out with it, Thanks

Well it has certainly polarized opinion. The comments on New Order's Facebook alternate equally between people loving it and others hating, one person even claiming to have cancelled their pre order of the album on the basis of his or her dislike for Restless.

iTunes only has the full length version here (UK) Linus, looks like I'll need to buy the edited version from Amazon although I have to say I prefer the longer version. Somehow it just feels more complete, musically!

As for the tune, it's definitely grown on me. I really like it.

I have to say that I love it. Liked it from the first time I listened to it. The same feeling I had after listening to so many other great New Order tracks. The intro, the keyboards on the background, Steve's tight drumming and also the heavy Joy Division-esque bassline (I can see that playing all these amazing Hooky basslines really inspired Tom Chapman on this song, but who can blame him for that?). I also love the way Bernard has laid the vocals, I really can't remember another song where he sang like this and I just can't get enough of it. Realy looking forward to the new album!
Interesting - at least that sleeve confirms that this is one of the tracks with live strings on it.

Restless is magnificent, classic New Order. It took a few listens for me to realise it's brilliance, which is usually the way with New Order - majestically off the cuff and understated. A band who last put out a single proper 10 years ago has the balls to have in the lyrics "I couldn't care less/Can't be a success". Fucking genius. And the subject matter is about the restlessness of the human condition, how we are never satisfied and feel at the bottom of our soul that there's something missing even if we've got everything. But they'd probably say something like "er, it's just a punk song", which is just as profound. I've been a fan since I first saw them 07/02/1981 so I know what to expect, always confounding expectations but somehow always the same too. It's a great tune too.
At first listen to this I was really disappointed, thought it was typical late period New Order solid track but nothing special. However after a few plays I've done a complete U-turn and think it's absolutely brilliant. It's a subtle track and it takes a few listens to pick up on its genius. Definitely the strongest thing they have put out since Crystal, if not Regret. Synths + bass + barney's vocals on the chorus are magic- can definitely see the comparisons to Dream Attack! Somehow Tom Chapman's managed to play a better Hooky-esque bassline than anything Hooky's come up with himself in the last 15 years or so as well.
Hyped for the album now!

I could have written that, even down to the year 1981 (though didn't see them live until '84).
The covetous will be the first to lose everything when true economic woe hits EVERYBODY and will realise that they had nothing of any substance in the first place. And yes, any explanation of the song's lyrics will be met with an understated response.
Barney disguises some very heavy subject matters with some very simplistic, childlike, nursery style lyrics.
The intellectually snobbish - who denounce his lyrics as puerile - always miss the point as the true meaning flies UNDER their heads.
I feel increasingly positive about the lyrics. They are catchy and are at times both nonchalant and wistful, showing that Barney's penchant for contradictory sentiments can still be put to thoughtful and effective use. I've played this song at the cafe I work at in Brooklyn, and my co-workers agree it's the best New Order track since Crystal. A small pool to build consensus from, but it's nice to know the more casual fan can get behind the new track.
I'm also really digging Chapman's driving bass style. The relatively clean, warm amp sound helps make the rhythm track feel airtight. Funnily, I hadn't thought of New Order featuring a classic rhythm combo since Technique. Aside from a few tracks on Get Ready, Hooky and Stephen stopped sounding like musicians in real sync with one another. I know some fans are begrudgingly suggesting the track would be much improved by some of Hooky's high melodic lines, but I was starting to find those as bland and predictable as Barney's "Hey, what's happening here" opening lyrics. The most important thing about Restless -- aside from being a *good* song and a convincing New Order one at that -- is that it sounds like the band are no longer on autopilot. The style of the track itself may not be full of surprises, but it's enlivened and smart arrangement is vastly better than the largely belabored stuff on WFTSC / Lost Sirens.

New Order is currently on track to release their first album in a decade, Music Complete. While the band has debuted several tracks off the album at live shows, yesterday marked the official release of the album’s first single, “Restless,” a rather appropriate title for a song New Order fans have been craving for the better part of ten years.
The song went live on New Order’s YouTube Channel earlier this week, with the video boasting nothing more than modern, minimalist, album art – which we can now assume will be a staple of the new album. Despite their ten year hiatus, “Restless” proves that New Order is ready to come back onto the stage.
The song opens with a melodic elegance, which is sweetly melancholic, and transitions into an almost symphonic lull, which remains a constant throughout all four minutes and thirty seconds of the song. While “Restless” offers something far mellower than New Order’s older work, it’s still undeniably a New Order piece.
“Restless” boasts more guitar the usual, and the melding of the acoustic with the electronic provides a rhythmic harmony which details the trials of greed and what may be a critique of capitalist society. It’s vocalist Bernard Sumner’s quiet voice, which is entirely classic New Order, that gives the lyrics their haunting, alternative tone. “I want a nice car / A girlfriend / Who’s as pretty as a star … But how much do you need.”
With over 100,000 views, the debut of the single might not be ground breaking, but the response has been nothing if not positive. Music Complete is set to feature collaborations with artists Iggy Pop and The Killers’ Brandon Flowers. While the band’s original bassist, Peter Hook, is no longer featured on the roster, Gillian Gilbert will be joining on as pianist.
The song touches on the perils of stagnancy and apathy through both its sound and lyrics: “I feel so restless / Ain’t got no interest / I couldn’t care less / Can’t be a success.” And while one could argue the easy rhythms and simplistic phrasing that make up the overall song might not be as visually strong as some of New Order’s older works, the simplicity and redundancy is perhaps the overall point of the song. “Restless” maintains the moving introspection and conceptual delivery that categorized New Order in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. At the heart of it, the song is about finding a way out of a monotony; it is about how taking a step back is all it really takes to regain a sense of passion.
I've lived with this track a couple of weeks now, and I've decided the more I hear it, the more I love it, in both its current versions. Perfect understated summer anthem. Text book definition of a "grower". Can't stop the darn thing looping in my head, and can't wait to hear the deluxe extended version.
Classic New Order, and an equally strong first album single to Regret and Crystal. Fantastic stuff.

I am quite happy with Restless. It's a really beautiful song, elegant, full of melody. Steve's drumming is really propulsive and tight, and his Jazz influences really come to the fore here. Gillian's synth melodies are full, bright, and gorgeous, such a welcome return to have her back on keyboards. Tom's baselines establishes a strong, low end melodic groove that is tight on the rhythm end. Tom has a great sense of melody (as you can hear on the BL and Rubberbear stiff he has played on) and he hold down the rhythm well, his contribution is nice.
Bernard and Phil both contribute some understated by tasty guitar work. Bernard's leads are classic. \
I think Bernard's lower vocal register sounds good, and the lyrics are actually quite interesting. Bernard seems to be discussing the rampant materialism and instant gratification that permeates culture today, and as this is something that makes me quite sad (and sometimes angry), it's cool to see a song from NO about it.
The song is low key, I would have preferred they picked something more driving and dance oriented as the first single, but of course, I am also the guy who loves Fine Time, Jetstream, Guilt is a Useless Emotion, and Sugarcane.
But I see why they went with Restless. It's got the classic NO Technique sound, and it's radio friendly and I could see it playing on a lot of modern rock/indie radio stations and shows as well as catching the ears of casual fans on iTunes and Spotify.
I also think that choosing Restless as the first single shows that New Order have tremendous confidence in this new album. Sure, they could have released a more storming, dance oriented single first (as I am sure the album has these tracks), but instead they are going for a slow burn/build promo tactic that is clearly working very well.
I'm truly excited for this album and the ensuing tour!
