Is that what's referred to as "freeform" drumming on Nothing But A Fool?

I'm not a drummer or know much about drumming but it struck me that Steve's drumming on Nothing But A Fool kind of reminds me in a way of his fantastic drumming on Lonesome Tonight which i remember reading somewhere eons ago is what is described amongst drummers as freeform drumming.In places it kind of goes off somewhere from the beat but still keeps in time, still brilliantly drives the song.I mean, the guy's a fucking genius.Really loving the drum sound they achieved on this track.

I am sharing the love of this song with you. I think it's one of their best and agree on the drumming.

What I am finding slightly distracting (and I can't decide yet whether it is spoiling it for me a bit) is that on the chorus, chunks of Bernard's vocal have been spliced together. It is most noticeable on the first word, 'sometimes' as there is the slightest of pauses then the vocal goes into a different register.

Anyway, a minor quibble and perhaps the only way they could get the vocal sounding right.

Can't imagine it will be one that they will attempt live.

This is such a superb record. No idea where it is on the album because I hit shuffle by mistake, but it was the first one that came out the speakers and blew me away with its agony and beauty.

Very common practice for most singers and instrumentalists when recording stuff, especially these days when it's all done digitally, far easier than physically spicing bits of tape together. A few different takes of the vocal or whatever are recorded and on some of the takes, lines [or even single words] are preferred to other ones, or there's a mistake on one take or something. The bits are all then 'comped' together to make the whole chorus/verse/whatever. Hope this one is being rehearsed for the upcoming gigs, it would make for a brilliant set closer, on the Q&A on the web earlier not one member of the band picked it out as being a favourite track off the album though, so perhaps not.

The drum fill near the start after the instrumental intro bit where it kicks into the main verse has been bugging me since the first day I heard it. It just sounds like a flub, but if you listen close enough you can tell it’s not actually a mistake, just a weird fill.

Then once I got the extended version in the boxset – all became clear, it’s just a bad edit.
