pick the songs you think will be singles after restless:

tutti frutti - seems certain people on the highline plastic unlearn this hatred singularity

*TECHNICALLY

what i should have said, by 'singles', are separate releases, either physical or digital or both, that have extra mixes, or versions of the song (and not just the album version or edit).

so something like 'restless', as a cd-single, 12 inch, and digital release would qualify.

Good question! To be honest I'm not sure what a single release means these days but if it's to do with radio playlists Superheated and Academic maybe :)

1 1 like

I think you left out some important songs.

My first choice is academic, but I don't think it will happen.

But also unlearn this hatred should be a single, as the chorus is very catchy. But at least it should be a club single like guilt is a useless emotion, and someone like you were.

And superheated is very catchy and radio friendly. It might help the Killers out as well.

Plastic Tutti Frutti Singularity

1 1 like

They should release a single near christmas.Which one though? Tutti Frutti would make the works party or any christmas/new year party go with a lot of fun whereas Superheated would have that schmaltzy, sentimental and warm christmas thing lol

No , seriously, Superheated is a sure fire radio friendly hit waiting to happen and would give both New Order and The Killers a rise in exposure.

Superheated for Xmas. And then Singularity.

Unlearn This Hatred or Academic

but most likely it will be Singularity or Plastic...

I put on the cd in the car with my 16 year old daughter, and the first song I played was unlearn. And she said it was too clubby. She only likes top 20 pop music. The second song I played was academic. She said it was not her kind of music. The third song I played was tutti. She said she hates the singers voice. The next song was superheated, and she loved it, even said it was their best song. Granted she only likes Temptation '98, hates everything else. But still I found a winner. So if you want a bunch of teen girls at your concert, release Superheated. I still have more songs to go threw with her, next time. And I played a little of Stray dog and she said it was creepy, but that was a given.

Nothing but a Fool - for the sake of feeding a wider variety of tastes.

Academic - for me. With a big fat B side that is another new track.

1 1 like

Superheated, although it'll need an edit. More than ever "singles" are meant to make the general public aware there is a parent album they may like to buy and being as this has Him From Out Of The Killers on it and they're quite a popular beat-combo it should mean lots of interest and coverage.

1 1 like

Does it matter? They're all singles these days.

Superheated feels like the obvious choice to me but I'd love to hear radio edits of Singularity and Nothing But A Fool.

Just to show how wrong the world is I've been reading Wikipedia and according to that New Order released Plastic as the second single from Music Complete on the 16th September. Of course, there is no actual physical single to buy, no b-sides, extra tracks or remixes. Tracks just appear.

See? There's no such thing as singles now or, as someone else put it, they're all singles now.

Wank (the system, not the music or the band)

1 1 like

Plastic was a promo single with no physical release

I would like a proper second single with a physical vinyl release and some remixes maybe,

Singularity and Unlearn This Hatred would be good candidates for this in my opinion [:)]

Just to shake things up a little, the band should release "Stray Dog". It would be a typical New Order "two-fingers-to-the-world" gesture. If, by some miracle, mainstream radio stations would play it, the song would scare and confuse all those by-the-numbers DJs who couldn't put a radio show together without the same sanitised playlist of folk-based shite that passes as pop today!

As Coop says, singles don't matter any more since we can't actually purchase a CD with B-sides or remixes. A real shame.

Tutti Frutti People on the Highline Superheated The Game

Restless did a great job of saying “New Order are back… nothing has changed”, and I reckon the next few singles should offer all of the following…

  • make everyone like the song from bar one, without even knowing it's New Order
  • make old people say “I can't believe New Order now sound like this”
  • make people say… “everything has changed… and I might even prefer the New New Order”
  • be ripe for huge brilliant proper remixes
  • be worth remixing, rather than being remixed for the sake of it

Yes, Singularity is probably a better song than those above… but then, it grabs the heart of every New Order fan. Would probably be ignored by everyone else.

Unlearn this Hatred? Brilliant, but not sure up it would have wider appeal, and it doesn't need a remix… except perhaps to be the same but longer.

i added a description as to what would qualify as a 'single'.

basically, the old definition of a digital/physical or both with new tracks, and mixes is what i was thinking of.

just putting out an album track wouldn't qualify.

looks like some of the other tracks i didn't mention are getting a lot of votes also...

Stupid rules.

You can have a 40min cd single if it's all remixes, but not if it includes a bside.

So, we probably have cd singles with nothing but remixes to look forward to.

I'm not a big fan off remixes. I mean, one or two at a push but sometimes I find there's a limit to how many 9 minute mixes done by people I've never heard of I can take. There's been some great remixes of New Order, a personal fave would be the K-Klass Ruined In A Day, but also tonnes of crap.

Am i the only one who hears Nothing But A Fool as the big killer chorus quintessential New Order single??

It doesn't seem to get mentioned too much in the reviews either, but for me it's the best song on there

But back to the question - it's pretty awesome that almost every song could be a hit single (in the old-fashioned sense)

Apart from Stray Dog - which if it didn't have Iggy on it, would have been a Player In The League style throwaway instrumental b-side

Compared to Republic which starts with one killer single, and then feels like they sequenced the rest of the album in order of how bad the songs got

I always quite liked Player In The League. One or two dodgy lyrics in it yeah but i like the song. The final minute or so outro is superb. In fact i've just had to play it as i hadn't listened to it for years. So thanks for reminding me of it[:)] Could have just about made it onto Get Ready .As for Republic's songs declining in quality as the album goes on i think Get Ready declines even more so.Was never a massive fan of Someone Like You though i know a lot of people rate it highly.Rock The Shack, Close Range and Run Wild were all a bit meh.

As for keepitcoming's opinion that Tutti Frutti would be bigger than Blue Monday...well, yeah, in an ideal world but i don't have much faith in the British record buying public. They're too into vacuous EDM shite or dreary Sam Smith/Ed Sheeran type cack.

I have to say I like Republic but maybe my view of the album is slightly skewed as it was my first New Order album before I went back and bought all the previous albums. Regret, World and Spooky were good songs and good singles. I only like the K-Klass mix of Ruined in a Day for some reason.

As for the rest, Everyone Everywhere is one of my all-time favourite New Order songs! Young Offender and Special are another two decent songs. Hooky's subtle bass on many of the songs is pretty good too. Overall, I reckon Republic is pretty good.[:)]

So how is Restless doing in the charts? I will admit I was surprised when they did release a single. The video was most likely a waist of money. Maybe in the Uk you will hear Restless on none top 40 radio stations. But the rest of the world you might hear it once, if at all. I think they have become a fan based band. They built up a big enough fan base and that's who they cater too. New fans will be a rare thing to come by.

As for tutti frutti, it will do as well as Restless. They may promote it on some uk shows, but it won't crack the top 40.

  2. Tutti Frutti--for big fat remixes.
  3. People on the High Line--I want to hear edits/remixes of this song, as it's there's so much that is buried in the mix that needs to be relieved... That guitar bit starting at 4:38 -- it's classic New Order, why didn't they use it throughout the song more prominently??

Bernard talked in the Radio X interview about a lot of the extended versions being stripped back to reveal some of the layers of the tracks that you can't hear so clearly. So even if this isn't a single, maybe you'll be in luck...

Good point - in fact that applied to WFTSC to some extent too. That last track Working Overtime is probably the worst thing they ever did IMO (maybe tied with Rock The Shack!)

Music Complete is a different proposition completely, the standard of songs is consistent throughout.

I have a recurring dream where Melanie C feeds me beer and kebabs in a pink dress. Don't know why I wear that. My fave off the album is Academic but as a more acoustic track it'd be difficult to mix. There was a remix of 'Run 2' as the second track off the 12" and it was cringe-worthy. What's the point? A safer bet would be Tutti Frutti - danceable, radio-friendly and mixable like Silk's Fine Time Mixes. We'll see. Ultimately it makes no difference cos the fans'll dig everything off the Net anyway.

I'm hoping Academic will round off an even four singles from Music Complete. Wonderful track. We've had a guitar track with Restless, two dance tunes in the shape of Tutti Frutti /Singularity so a return to guitars (with an electronic edge) would be perfect to balance things out. Academic was released as remix stems along with Tutti Frutti and they've just introduced it into the live set which is hopefully further evidence it might get it's own release.

I know Mute's approach has been remix heavy but a b-side, no matter how low-key would be great... even just a Stray Dog-esque instrumental for the fans perhaps.

I never got around to downloading the digital pre-release of Plastic when it came out, but was the ending of it any different than the album version? On the final release, Plastic blends into Tutti Frutti, so I'm wondering if the earlier version just abruptly ended or actually faded out.

On a side note, I was just getting ready to compile a new personal NO compilation once I get my Singularity CD... so what is everyone's verdict on Procession being a single? I've always assumed it was the b-side of Everything's Gone Green for many years since Substance listed it as such. There's even a handful of vinyl copies which list the 7" version of EGG as the a-side. Did the Singles compilation perhaps get this wrong? Or is it considered a double a-side single, sort of like DM's Blasphemous Rumours + Somebody? I got rid of my Singles CD years ago, so I don't remember what was said about it in the liner notes, but it certainly sounded out of place on the album.

It was the album version - no difference. It shouldn't be considered a single, it was merely a taste of the album.

In the UK, Procession was released as the A-side of a 7", with Everything's Gone Green on the B-side. EGG was then re-recorded and released as the A-side on a 12" in Belgium by Factory Benelux, which was Factory's Belgian imprint. That 12" was only available as an import in the UK, so technically EGG was never an A-side on Factory proper.

The liner notes in Substance incorrectly attribute Procession as the B-side to FBN, when it doesn't appear on that 12" at all. Of course, Substance also famously swaps the titles of Mesh and Cries And Whispers.

So EGG is one of two instances in New Order's catalog where a B-side was so good, it was deemed worthy of being an A-side in it's own right (the other being 1963).

Is this actually noted on the original 7" vinyl anywhere? What makes this a little confusing is that on this Discogs website, there's a few different regions which mix it up a bit:

France and Spain had matrix numbers on each label showing that EGG is side-A and Procession is side-b:

France Side AFrance Side B

Spain Side ASpain Side B

Then there's one from Italy which clearly labels Procession as Side 1 and EGG as Side 2:

Italy Side 1Italy Side 2

Unless I'm missing something, all the other regions don't seem have anything on the label indicating which side is which.

When Bruce, Drew, and myself were putting Recycle together we did a lot of digging. There are quotes from both Tony Wilson and Stephen (who wrote it) alluding to Procession being the A-side. Stephen's quote might even be in the Retro box, but I don't have it handy to check.

There's something here about people are invited to make a music video for People On The High Line.So i guess that's the next single? Didn't Bad Lieutenant do something like that? A competition for a fan made music video.

Good spot FP. I guess that's one way to keep costs down. Not really the song I wanted as the next single, but if it gets a physical release I'll probably buy it out of some silly desire to complete the MC collection.

People On The High Line???

Hope it's à typo. It must be Academic or Plastic.

There's room for one more Single in the slipcase.

My vote goes to Superheated.

Pretty much the worst possible pick out of the remaining candidates.

A favourite of Bernard's. He thought it should be one of the first tracks released but Daniel Miller suggested it was more of a "Summer single".

Bernard thinks everyone will be dancing round the barbecue this summer to People On The High Line. Not sure about that. It's a passable song but not my favourite. The other two candidates would have been Academic or Superheated.Maybe they think one more will fit in the slipcase making 5 in total but that remains to be seen, it'd be a tightly packed slipcase that would surely impinge on the integrity of the spine/cardboard.

I'd suggest it's more of a Sumner single.

There's a vibe there that reminds me of some of the back half of Republic.

It would be stupid to limit the number of singles beczuse of a slipcase size.

Maybe they don't give a stuff about the integrity of the cardboard [:eek] . I have a hunch that keeping the album and tour boyant might be more of a priority for NO. Perhaps if everyone tweets NO and says: Hey, remember how many CD singles will fit in the slipcase, it might prompt them to cancel POTHL and jump straight to releasing Mark Reeders Academic remix. Or not.

This would work better if they had just omitted the word...just.
