Okay, I know what they're saying about most tracks being more guitar based on recent albums, but even on those there are synth based tracks. It's not as if synths have stopped being used on most New Order tracks. e.g. Get Ready is the biggest New Order rock album and synths can be heard on nearly every track. I'd describe Someone Like You as a synth based dance orientated pop song...

it seems they know when to add a great guitar part for the synth songs and vice versa. They rarely disappoint whichever way predominates. "Someone like you"is a classic among many
I always interpreted "taking a break from synths" as "Gillian's not here." Without her, they were just basic Dad Rock and Mom Pop with some synth pads in the background.
They never stopped using synths but they weren't at the core of the writing process since 1993.
In recent interviews, they clarified it by saying how song writing on GR & Sirens predominantly started with guitar jamming & adding synth lines later. MC was breaking out the computers first, then bringing bits together later, guitars included.
