From Facebook:

From when New Order first began, we have worked with some amazing talent on all our music videos. True Faith & World are just some of our favourites but now it’s somebody else's turn to create a new video just for us. Creative community Genero is teaming up with us to launch a new competition for a budding creative to make a video for our song 'People On The High Line'. If you think you have what it takes, follow the link and enter your video to be considered for this unique opportunity. Entries must be submitted by 5th June

I hope it's not going to be the next single, I'm guessing it's going to be wheeled out tonight with La Roux doing backing vocals, already planning to use the opportunity to go and get another drink while its played. Plastic would have been a far better choice for the next single.

I agree that Plastic seems an obvious choice for remixes, but I think it's unlikely to be a single as it lacks a strong chorus. In fact, there's really not much of a vocal melody at all.

Yeah, "Plastic" would be a better choice indeed, but doesn't make sense a video contest for a song with a Radio Edit mix available if it is not the project for the next single.

Not a bad song at all... I really love that funky sound. But evidently I would choose "Plastic" as a single.

This competition almost certainly makes POTHL the next single. 'Academic' is a much more worthy choice (and I doubt there will be a fifth single), but there you go.

If you set up an account at Genero you can stream and download the "unmastered" edit of POTHL. I actually really like this version as much of it retains the instrumental parts of the track without the verses and choruses dominating - unusual for a radio edit.

I do wonder if this will be a video specific edit of the track, with a different edit becoming the released single mix (as with 'World'). We shall see, but I'm liking the 'Video Edit' and hope this becomes the single mix.

Would still much prefer 'Academic' as the next/final single though.

I guess a lot of POTHL discussion has disappeared with the fourm issues.

Perhaps this will help bring things back up to date. Late Night Tough Guy (LNTG Can't get Any Higher) remix:

Did anyone here receive their 12" and/or CD today early? I got home from work this afternoon and there had been a delivery attempted to my house and a Yodel card put through my letterbox. Just says on the card the parcel wouldn't fit through the letterbox . Doesn't say what it is. Tried phoning the number but keep getting engaged tone. Wasn't expecting delivery til tomorrow the 29th or later and not expecting any other delivery at the moment.

I got confirmation of despatch yesterday (Thursday) from Piccadilly Records so I'm expecting my bundle today. Where did you order yours from? With previous releases I know people on here have received their copies a day or so early before.

quick review:

1 People On The High Line (Richard X Radio Edit) 3:35 average, but short edit

2 People On The High Line (Claptone Remix) 6:18 another version thats not much different

3 People On The High Line (Lntg Can't Get Any Higher Remix) 7:20 boring stripped down dub

4 People On The High Line (Planet Funk Remix) 5:48 good, but way too short version, sounds like it's in a different key

5 People on the High Line (Extended Mix) 7:51 standard extended version

6 People On The High Line (Hybrid Remix) 9:02 excellent, extended electro mix with breakbeats

7 People On The High Line (Hybrid Armchair Remix) 5:39 good, quiet ambient version

^ Well I look forward to hearing those Hybrid remixes. Guess I should have ordered before today.

New Order store do like to hit you with postage don't they? The CD single (i.e. what I've ordered for now) may be a good price (£4.99) on the NO store but an additional £3.49 for standard shipping is a LOT. Piccadilly Records charge 50p more for the product but £2 less for the shipping. They win my order.

My CD & 12" arrived this morning from Piccadilly Records and I was charged £3.55 delivery for both items combined. Very reasonable shipping charges and always a reliable service.

Fotzepolitic - I think the NO Store send out on a 2-3 day service in the UK, so it might very well be that's what your parcel is.

I'm off to listen....

Tried again to contact the courier that tried to deliver something yesterday, Yodel, but can't get through.

Then it occurred to me to log in and check my account in NewOrder store. My bundle is showing as not even shipped yet! Still "Packing" .So a) I've no idea what Yodel have tried to deliver to me and b) NewOrder store hasn't even shipped my stuff yet. This POTHL single isn't working out very well for me so far, is it? Oh well, worse things happen at sea.

That's really poor service, but that's one of the reasons I stopped ordering from the NO store. They're not necessarily the cheapest, releases are obviously not posted out on time, the delivery service isn't quick enough (Piccadilly Records use Royal Mail 24), and downloads invariably go wrong and are never delivered promptly.

I know I keep championing Piccadilly Records but everything I have ordered from there, always turns up on time, and unlike outlets ĺike Norman Records, they only take your money at the time of despatch, rather than at the order point.

I bet you're wondering now what your parcel is. 😁

So all the mixes are on Spotify now.

For those who thought the original POTHL was a bit light in it's loafers, Hybrid add a big pair of stomping boots to proceedings. And it works pretty well.

Hybrid's Armchair mix may be ambient, but in a slightly menacing way. They've managed to a bring a dark, almost sci-fi vibe to the track.

As for Planet Funk -well it's not quite WFTSC but it's pretty good nonetheless, especially from about 1.50 onwards. A tinkling piano motif that reminds me of FSOL's Papua New Guinea, and a sort of electro-trance vibe that you can lose yourself in on headphones. Oh and no Elly Jackson. The more I listen to it the better it gets.

I think it's safe to say that the Hybrid and Planet Funk mixes are considerably better than the original. What a pleasant surprise!

Just in case I'm the first one to notice...

There's two versions of the Claptone remix: the Claptone Remix (6:18) on the CD single and iTunes, plus the Claptone 12" Remix (6:35) on the vinyl and accompanying digital download bundle. The build-up is a bit longer on the 12" version, and features the first verse vocals (missing from the shorter CD version).

The minor difference actually made me wonder if the version on the CD-S and iTunes is in fact a mis-labelled 'Claptone Dub' or similar. Who knows?!

I agree with Less Than Zero (-1) that the Hybrid Remix is the standout.

There's nothing really poor, just mixes that subtract elements but don't take the track anywhere interesting enough with what's then left/added.

I think the Richard X edit is rather good considering the length. Would like to have had a new extended from him to see where else he could take it.

I bought the 7 track digital bundle (FLAC) off Qobuz a couple of days ago as I haven't gotten around to ordering the physical formats yet.

The Claptone remix hasn't improved much for me since I originally bought it off Beatport a few weeks ago and I'm a bit surprised it was touted as the "flagship" remix so much because in my opinion it's fairly average. Just repetitive and goes nowhere. I've read some comments saying it should had been labelled as a Dub which I'd probably agree with. The LNTG remix focuses more on that percussion bit from the original track and chops up the piano/guitar riffs which isn't too bad in my opinion. I do like the Planet Funk one; the reverb/pitch corrected vocal takes a couple of listens to get past and once the hi-hats kick in at 2:20 it's got a nice vibe about it. Both of the Hybrid mixes are really good but then I'm probably biased as I have a number of their albums already (introduced ironically via their Hooky collaborations). I've just dusted off "I Choose Noise" for a listen this afternoon and it still sounds really good a decade on.

A minor point but I notice they opted not to offer HD files this time when we got those with 'Restless' & 'Singularity'. HD files of 'Tutti Frutti' were available on certain US and Japanese digital stores so I wonder if POTHL will get a similar treatment. I take it the FLACs offered with the vinyl download card are 44/16?

I've ordered both digital (via Juno) and shaped 7" from N.O. store... but the instant digital download offered with the purchase consisted only of MP3 files. Country restrictions, perhaps? I also never got the free HD audio download of the new extended mixes of Nothing But A Fool & Superheated from Complete Music, despite the fact I've bought the original vinyl box last year.

Ha, funny! Well maybe not for you. I'm sure you don't need us to tell you how to respond to that! However...if it were me, I'd cancel the whole order, place a fresh order for the 7" only, and get the other items from Piccadilly Records. Yeah..... well, i messaged them again basically asking them if it was their idea of a joke.Made a couple of comments about them being cheapskates because of the fact they don't want to send out two different deliveries.Because that's what basically they've done albeit very craftily. They've charged me £5.99 packing and shipping but declined to tell me that will be for one, all in, delivery of the bundle.Either that or it's too difficult for them to separate my order up between the 12" & CD and the 7" which is what i've also suggested to them.

Unfortunately for me, though conveniently for them, there doesn't seem to be an order cancellation option at NewOrder store, at least not that i've managed to find. The only way to cancel an order would appear to be by sending them a message.Which of course they'll claim to have never received/ignore.

At the end of the day though there's much worse things going on in the world and i get the feeling my complaints to NewOrder store will be a waste of energy and like i said the there doesn't appear to be a cancellation of order option other than sending them a message.Guess i'll just have to wait til September to receive my 12", CD and 7" bundle.

Think I may have found where you can cancel your order at NewOrder store . In the "Contact us" section there's a cancellation option in the drop down but you can only send them a message requesting one . You don't appear able to do it yourself from your end.I may try it though, tell em where to go .

So...

Radio Edit and Extended Mix - most enjoyable tracks onthe CD, but not exactly remixes are they?

Claptone - most listenable and enjoyable mix of the bunch for me. Gives an effortless quality and flow to the song. LTNG - bores me to death. Planet Funk - a bit weird, not a fan of the auto-tuned vocals in mixes which change the original key. Hybrid - good remix, but nothing stand-out. Hybrid Armchair - again, a bit boring, but not as unnervingly repetitive as the LTNG remix.

All in all, a mediocre package, but 4 out of 7 being rated good to excellent is good enough.

Have to agree with Lee, this is easily the worst track on the album, and it's a totally uninspiring choice of remixers as well, the first New Order single in living memory that I won't be buying.

My interpretation of the single release logic:

Restless was described as the track that was the most collaborative product of all the members. They probably wanted their return to be a unified effort.

Tutti Frutti was catchy and novel. It had to be purposed as a single as it was likely to wear out it's welcome existing only as an album track (à la Fine Time).

Singularity would have been many people's choice for lead single. Reasons against were the unified effort theory at odds with Rowlands substantial part and the fact that the song had been making the rounds live so wasn't "new".

People on the High Line is a favourite of Barney's and he was talked out of it being released earlier by Daniel Miller who perceived it as more of a "Summer single".

Not surprised really. In the release date the CD edition sold out quickly on Mutebank and the 12" was out of stock in the blink of an eye. [:eek] Almost the same at Amazon: their copies were out of stock rapidly and there were sellers asking over 22 GBP for a twelve inch. I've ordered mine at Norman Records, a very cheap one but I had to wait some days until the shop receive new copies from the vinyl.

Singles from "Music Complete" are doing it right on the UK charts! As a fan, I'm very proud. [:d]

The 7" pre-sale went even quicker at most retailers. Might be a keeper.

Seems to be some conflicting info about the 12". Some sites are suggesting there's an alternate version still to come, maybe a US pressing? Can't imagine it'll have a different tracklisting.

But more importantly, thanks for the UK chart image above. Didn't know that Zomby & Burial track had dropped!

Why have b-sides died? My suspicion is that modern, established groups have confidence that they can turn any of the songs they work on into something suitable for the album, so they do an album's worth of songs and no more, so there's nothing left for b-sides. "proper" B-sides don't sell singles these days, I bet; but did they ever? I love b-sides. I've always loved seeing the side of a group that is a bit more experimental, perhaps less cohesive, a glimpse of a future that might have been. I have some wonderful b-sides collections (the Cure and banshees ones are excellent).

But the death of the proper b-side is nothing particularly new for NO, is it? They stopped post-Factory with Republic/Regret.

Maybe they're saving any b-sides for a stand alone album or for when a "deluxe" issue of the album is released years later. Anyways, there are still bands out there that put out the b-sides, one band that comes to mind is the Pet Shop Boys.

You have a point about the songwriting angle, but mixes/dubs/versions were often "b-sides" as early as Blue Monday (or even the version of Love Will Tear Us Apart sharing a side with These Days).

The dark days of the Republic era did spawn one "proper" b-side: The single Ruined in a Day sported Vicious Circle, an instrumental Monaco later developed into a single of it's own (Sweet Lips).

More b-sides emerged during the Get Ready era. I particularly like Behind Closed Doors and Such a Good Thing.

Special shout-out for Suede. Their epic '97 BSide collection amazed reviewers - cos Suede are probably the only band who don't have an A side / B side / LP mentality... They just work to make every track as good as possible. Contrast Blur! Come to think (that's my brain in reverse) the most overrated band ever i.e. one-with.biggest-discrepancy-between-hype-and-product is probably not New Order but Blur. Their singles were awesome but the albums were hit-and-miss and the B-sides were nearly always appalling. There's a story their manager went, 'We want to wring a few more singles off the album but everyone wants new Bsides now' - answer: 'Book us a studio for 3 hours tomorrow and we'll bash something out.' It may not be true but shit like Alex's Song, Gotcher and Daisy Bell show how it could circulate at all. I'd rate Suede over that whole Shitpop hype, including Oasis, Blur and Pulp... When I got sick of NO's meagre output being flogged I got into Blur and scouring the discographies I was impressed how many tracks they did - then I tracked (tee hee) 'em down and wasn't impressed at all! In those days there was no Youtube so fans would pay for 2 CD singles (often massively overpriced if they were oldies) and get 8 minutes of new, shit music.

I suppose that's not all that has changed, of course; the early singles not being album tracks at all for that matter. You're right that dub versions etc were around back then too, but it's not quite the same thing as we have now, with half a dozen "external" remixes of the a-side as a matter of course. (Come to think of it I'm not even certain that the various dub mixes from the old days were necessarily produced in-house, but I thought they were.)

I couldn't've put it better myself. Well i could, but I don't like to boast. I can't be arsed with these mixes cos (a) I got storage space and cash problems, (b) my obsessive days are well and truly behind me, and (c) they'll all turn up on this rare new database called Youtube. I'm not overstruck with the mixes I've heard so far anyway - the new LP's tough and it ain't like Revenge or Republic where they needed mixing (Spooky Stadium!). It's interesting that New Order did Bsides till BM and then stopped till Technique with 2 exceptions and then - I lost interest. At that level, anyway.

Once again please accept our apologies for this delay, thank you for your patience and continued support.

If you have any other questions about your order, please feel free to contact us here.

Many thanks, New Order HQ

...Of course it would be asking too much for them to provide the digital download of the tracks as a compensation, right?

Yep i have received that email too.Still not received the 12" and CD because i also ordered the 7" and they're too dumb to split it and send the available items first. They told me i'll have to cancel my order and re order again , ordering the 7" separately if i want to receive the 12" and CD now.But of course if i do that when i come to re-ordering they'll tell me they've sold out. They really are a bit dumb aren't they.

Does this count as trainspotting?: Between BM and Technique, Lonesome Tonight and 1963 (2 tracks regarded as among their best b-sides) emerged. Shout out for Murder, as well.

They're the 2 I meant. Murder was actually I can't be arsed to finish this sentence. If I could go back to myelf in 1990 and explain I would still be talking about NO's 1980s back catalogue in 2016, I would be very surprised. Surprised to meet a 26-years-older version of me telling me I would still be talking about NO's 1980s back catalogue in 2016.

POTHL has one of the best remix package in the NO discograpy. The whole maxi single is like a perfect summer anthem mini album for a beach party. Remix packages are usually has a bunch of different style mixes, but the POTHL remixes are so fitting together as a homogenous album.

Going in, they were tasked with regrouping to save their crumbling record company that saw fit to pump money into the Hacienda (and other acts) instead of pay them. The band members had their taste of creative freedom with their "side projects", but Bernard's was (by far) the most successful. Whatever struggles they had with the band being a creative democracy up to Technique were now amplified. One of Stephen Hague's roles was to make the production decisions that the band would otherwise have to deliberate over. That's why Republic is their most bland, generic work. There are some good tracks, but their hearts weren't really in it.

Did you see any of the 1993 shows? They only bothered to do 13 and I went to 2 of those. They were way more perfunctory and only-doing-it-for-the-money than Hooky imagines the shows without him are. I'd only seen them 3 times before, but could tell those weren't just "off nights". After the tour, the band didn't really speak to each other for 5 years.

There are plenty of dark times, but these did not (nor should they) inspire the best out of the band.

That is exactly how I feel about the period. London were desperate to plug NO as this eternally cool, vital outfit ('The beginning of a long relationship i.e. 2 LPs in I cant be arsed to work out how many years though I could have by now) and NO had to go along with it, but their heart really wasn't in it. You could tell from their most lack lustre LP since Movement and the gigs (a handful with no surprise tracks, unless you include Special). 'Republic is their most exquisitely doom-laden album to date' - nope, just thir most boring. I was a massive fan back then and wanted to be, but even I wasn't convinced In 96, Bernard said, We did 13 gigs, one for each track on Republic, and the others - bastards - never told me there were only 12 tracks on Republic... Tells you something about his involvement. I'm also convinced the fans know far more about those seemingly endless rehashes than the band members.

That goes without saying of course about dark times and inspiration… I’m sure you’re right and it certainly sounds very stressful. Even although, it’s still my fav New Order album, but this is not a recent thing and is perhaps due to my perspective being distorted by my own experiences, and of course in 1993 I had no idea of the background to making the album, which coincidentally was not a great time for me either relative to what had gone before. I was so relieved when it came out that the stars were still shining in that patch of sky, so to speak. It doesn’t sound bland or generic to me. When I finally noticed it, I actually thought it that the artwork deliberately featured advertising type language to contrast the music. Could it be that he (Saville) was taking the piss and I was the last to notice? I haven’t been to any gigs post 1988, so no inkling of the situation from that source, only found out sometime later as far as I recall.

However, shock horror, I also love Raise the Pressure and was surprised by scathing reviews so maybe all that was irrelevant and I would’ve loved it no matter what.

Didn’t Steve say that no matter how bad some gig was, there would always be someone say afterwards it was the best of their life? Same for albums it appears. [:d]

In the run up, Savile said it was echoing Thomson's holiday brochures. Holidays are NICE. Having your fucking house burnt down is NOT NICE. Savile is contrasting NICE and NOT NICE things. Smart.

[eek3] 😕 Not sure what your aim is, or Victoria Beckhams involvement and as you say, no one cares what we think anyway - nothing will change how I love the album, for whatever reason that may be, and no matter how right you may be re the artwork, which however also shows other images and appears open to interpretation especially to someone who knows nothing of the circumstances and how many people would even now? It would be interesting to know what Tony Wilson thought of the album since some of it seems to be concerned with him. But anyway I can’t unlike it now even if I said so, and it wouldn’t change anything.

All I have to go on is what is said, crystal ball out of order, actually I do have that dvd so it could well have been on there - must watch it again sometime.

I thought it was hilarious when the Geri said, The great thing about Spice is we destroyed stereotypes. As a woman, you were always compartmentalised. They see one characteristic and that's all you are. We're complex and refuse to be viewed on the basis of just one superficial aspect.' That's right, Ginger. I'm sure Sporty, Scary, Posh and Baby will bear this out. Occasionally I return to those moments in my (ex)heroes' careers that never worked and hope there's something painfully obvious I missed and it's always a case of no, so move on. Beatles for Sale, Bergman's Serpent's Egg, and yes, Repubelick... Come to think (that's my brain in reverse), in 93 select did a massive NO special - so did everyfuckingone else - and said one of the reasons they turned to Savile for Rep was as a constant they could rely on 'in a time of flux' (i.e. fucks). Struck me as making something out of nothing cos who else would they have chosen? Banksy? 'Coming up... Later... Fuck all for 3 years.' Re-Tony, you probably know this but on NOStory he said he never lstened to it cos he'd heard bad shit about it and wasn't sure how he'd feel. PS I always loved Posh for the effort and energy she put in. She must've been exhausted after this gruelling performance - well worth the salary... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5CM7RzlhgQ.

Er, well, no I don’t remember. Another one to watch again - haven’t seen it since the days of videotapes, though I have Item - A Collection + NO Story right here. Not that it would mean anything if he (Tony) did say that, and really, was he that much of a hermit? He had a song about him and never listened to it? (At least, I think Liar is about him, if not who else) It’s not my impression anyway - did he also avoid the radio, Top of the Pops - the Baywatch video, whatever else video shows were on at the time - The Chart Show maybe? and New Order Story even though he was in it, which if I recall was on tv before the album’s release, as at the time I didn’t recognise the music on it which was quite tantalizing until it came out later. So I’m not sure I would believe him anyway.

I think we all have those moments with artists occasionally I remember listening to Radiohead Kid A and thinking, what the hell is this about and I haven’t listened to anything of theirs issued since. Probably should investigate on iTunes in case I’m missing anything but I doubt it.

The original one-hour-including-ad-break NO Story was first broadcast on Channel 4 on the last Sunday of August 93, the same night as they performed their OMG-Could-This-Be-The-Last-Ever show at Reading (aka just another 93 gig), so after the album and its first three singles. The 2.5 hour version appeared on VHS in November alongside Spooky (aka WTF, the wankuz ain't even talking to each other but you still expect us to buy a single) and The Other 2 And You (aka Total Pile Of Shit). I really hated NOStory: it summed up everything I despise about journalism, i.e. pretensious wank that tells you all about how awesome I am at playing with language and Sweet Fanny Adams about the actual music: 'The coolest group of all time.' Huh? Ever heard of the Beatles, the Stones or the Spice Girls? 'After Regret, anything can happen... (London) This is the beginning of a long relationahip.' Yup, let's rerererererererererererehash the 2-singles-a-year back catalogue for three years till Bernard makes an album for another label and it's still shit. 'Even on London, they could do whatever they liked.' - Bernard: 'We've done endless promotional work for London cos they view us as an investment.' I love the way journos patted themselves on the back for deducing that Liar was about Tony... Well done! It's like 70s reviewers catching on that Lennon's How Do You Sleep was ACTUALLY about a certain ex band member: 'The only thing you done was YESTERDAY, and since you're gone you're JUST ANOTHER DAY... Those freaks was right when THEY SAID YOU WERE DEAD...' Who COULD he be talking about, fans? In '93 Bernard said the 'Chemical' bit about a payroll factory wasn't specifically about Factory, but I found it hard to imagine him penning such a line in different circumstances... He also said RIAD sounds like it's about Factory but wasn't: they all went out and got 'zonked' and then wrote this tune. The notion of '93's NO hanging out together at all, let alone getting wankud and bashing out a track together struck me as dubious too, but that's what the man said. Won't you listen to what the man said?

Ok this thread about POTHL seems to have gone into a debate about Republic so while i wait for my 12", 7" and CD of POTHL to arrive (been a month and a half now) i'll give my tuppance on Republic.

Well, it never really grabbed you (or at least me) by the neck and took your breath away like Power, Corruption & Lies or Low Life did.It never dazzled and left you speechless by its genius like much of Technique did back in January 1989.I don't know, i didn't hate Republic but i didn't love it much either.Well actually i did hate a lot of it, at first. Those first listens to World, Ruined In A Day and Spooky on Radio 1 a week before the album came out gave me a fricking headache. They were just an irritating, scrambled mess of beats and tuneless noise at first.I warmed to them a bit in time but not much. The Perfecto remix of World and the K-Klass remix of Ruined let those two songs off the hook eventually.

I interpreted the album as a little bit of a bitter dig at Factory yeah but to me it was more a melancholic sigh with resignation that a great era (80s NewOrder) was coming or had come to an end.Typified by the vibe in such tracks as Everyone Everywhere "You were once the main attraction but that's all in the past", Liar, Times Change, Special and Avalanche ( Avalanche is possibly the greatest song on the album)

Always thought one track that kind of summed up the problem with the album was Young Offender. All the elements of a great New Order track were in there, everything that normally would have made a classic NO song was there- but the track just didn't have any energy or vitality. It was less than the sum of its parts.

Special has , well, one or two special moments but ,again, never fully hits the mark like an Age Of Consent or a Leave Me Alone or an All The Way ( a criminally often overlooked New Order classic) or a Dream Attack.

Regret was good though.First time i heard it was the Fire Island mix on Radio 1 in March 93 and the DJ Jo Wiley said that's the new single from New Order and for a few weeks i thought it was the main single mix, the radio edit. Then a month or so later i heard the actual main version and i definitely recall thinking on first listen how much it reminded me of Ceremony.Strange but the song never reminded me of Ceremony ever again after that first listen.Still, it was a phenomenal comeback single (at that time) for New Order and their best bet at cracking the market of the average music fan, the average man or woman on the street, the mum taking her kids to school in the morning. No other New Order single before Regret would have garnered the interest of that sort of person.

But all in all Republic though it has its moments just didn't leave me blown away and speechless like P,C & L or Low Life or Technique.I think by that time though i wasn't as bothered as i had been in the 80s.I was much, much more distraught upon listening to Brotherhood for the first time in October 1986.Took me fuckin ages to like Brotherhood. That mid 80s era i had an unhealthy NO obsession so for them to release an album i didn't at first take to was a major fucking downer at that time.By the time Republic was released i'd moved on a bit.NO had done some incredible music (apart from Brotherhood IMHO) in the 80s , culminating with the effortless of Technique in 1989 but i think i accepted with Technique, this is it, this is as good as it gets. They will never top this.

Other little things i remember from the Republic era- i went to Reading 93 and set the video to record NewOrderStory on ITV.Except when we got home and sat down to watch the recording the video had fucked up the recording and there was was just a fuzzy screen with a ghsotly faint image of what should have been the doc.In the end i didn't see the thing til the release of the VHS later in 1993.

Also, memory tells me i bought the maxi CD single of Spooky off Amazon or something in 1994.But that's impossible.Amazon wasn't even around then was it? And i didn't even have internet access til about 1999/2000.But i distinctly remember the maxi single dropping through my letterbox in a brown jiffy bag.I must have ordered it from one of those old adverts in the back of NME or something.Sister Ray Records always used to advertise in NME back in those days.I must have sent a cheque off in the post.Whatever.

But yeah as Mr Monkhouse has said, there was all the music papers and media stuff having orgasms about New Order being a still ultra cool and relevant band around 1993 but i remember at the time i felt their coolness and relevance had peaked when they headlined Reading 89.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I feel about 93. To borrow from a RTP review, all froth and no beer... I also heard the Fire Island Regret on the radio and had the 12" and got into it before the '''''proper''''' take. You're right about Young Offender - with gutsier mixing it could've been up there with Round and Round. In retrospect I was such a megafan in those days I was desperate to find Something To Like but it was tough. The album never peaked, the gigs were formula and most of the mixes were money first and quality second. The only gems in there were World - Perfecto, Spooky - Stadium and RIAD - K-Klass. No dandy inner Groove message either. The Other Two LP was mediocre too.

Off topic but I think Victoria Beckham must have the biggest discrepancy between success and quality. She's one of the richest, most photographed women in the UK but no one seems to like her very much... In the same vein, the Spice Girls must be party to the biggest distance between commercial and critical success. I like Mel C. In my opinion (this is English for I'm right) they peaked in the late 80s. I first got the singles (then Substance) and Technique and Electronic excepted, it was nearly all downhill after that. PCL was cool, but LowLife is one of the most overrated albums ever. Brotherhood has BLT and not much else and Movement is etc. As I said, I think I just needed a hobby alongside beer and porn - the actual music never really matched my enthusiasm.

I got into NO when I was 13 and was putting all the pieces together by listening to 'Substance' (oh, so *that's* who does this song) in 1991. I actually bought the Electronic CD singles before that, just on the strength of the sleeves. I later figured out it was the same singer. They didn't tell you all this stuff in America. Back in that time, where I came up, you had to figure it all out on your own. 'Getting Away With It' supposedly charted pretty good in the States, but I never heard it on the radio. I also loved 'Technique', of course. Had the 12"s, CD singles, etc.

But when 'Republic' came out, I reckon it was that coming of age time that, I don't know, I still love that record. I love the singles from it. I remember getting the 'Regret' CD single just on sight, getting it home, putting it into the player, and being blown away. 'The New Order Mix' is by far my favorite. 'The Perfecto Mix' of 'World' was just omg. And just when I was all about some K-klass, O&O just blew them out of the water with their version. I remember getting the 2-part 'Spooky' CD single and blasting that 'Out Of Order Mix'. I love 'The Other Two & You' as well. 'Innocence'. Sums it up, perfectly.

Even though I played the 'Out Of Order Mix' on an old-school edition of my radio show recently, those mixes of POTHL are great. I just wish Barney's voice wasn't lowered on the 'Planet Funk Remix'. PF should have figured a way to make that work. But I'll have a dub version of it, if ya got one! For the record, the 'Claptone Remix' seems to be working best. Didn't think I'd say it, but it's true. I play NO out every chance I get, so I'm hammering this single.

Basically, I live for the singles. But I really love this album. Screw it if Hooky's not there. Even the regular old 'Extended Mix' of POTHL is uplifting. Killer track.

There's no hope for people like me who express an different opinion to the majority on an entirely subjective subject matter, is there?

Thanks for the recollection, it was good to read. :) I'm a fan of New Order since WFTSC, but I started to collect the Republic and Technique singles this year, so the Republic mixes are fresh to me, and I know what you talking about, they are very good, especially the Spooky mixes, and the Ruined mixes. Oh and I LOVE the NO mix of Regret, it's far better then the album version.

I don't mind Jizzstream that much. As Hooky said (and we've seen what a reliable source the fellow is), it was a track that needed remixing - think World Perfecto, Spooky Stadium, even Pineapple Feces Ron Germaine... I get the feeling people like to have their heroes and villains and they always go for this one as Worst NO Track. Try Fuckercane. Or don't. It's like when everyone was going on about Scarlett Johanson as the sexiest woman in the world. Personally I haven't met every woman in the world and if I had I wouldn't have the energy to make an objective appraisal.

Aha. I thought you 7" orderers might be about to get this when that video appeared yesterday, as it goes with the Claptone 7" mix as far as I understand. I wonder if they re-made the 7" after the initial pressing (hence delays). Your picture looks like a more shaped 7" than the pic below that NO tweeted a while back. Anyway, both "exclusive" mixes are included in the digital bundle in FLAC/MP3 along with 5 of the other remixes (LNTG, Planet Funk, Richard X Extended & both Hybrid).

So that makes 3 variants of the Claptone Remix... CD single mix, 12" mix and 7" edit.

Will they bother with a fifth single? (Academic please...)

Finally received my picture disk 7" yesterday - #1428. Pity that you have to unpeel the sticker to get to the download card. They should have put the code on one of the four pieces of paper they stuck inside the mailer.

got my copy #1203 from ebay, decent price, and fast shipping from the UK.

i like having a nice picture disc from them. i don't think there are any other real ones from new order, they are mostly bootlegs.

Mine arrived today finally...but I can't bring myself to peel or cut the sticker on the 7". If anyone could quietly point me towards a digital Richard X Video Mix I'd be very appreciative. No Richard X mixes at all with the 12" download bundle I got today :(
