Sony to release orchestral covers of Haçienda anthems

Sony Classical will release Haçienda Classiçal, which re-imagines iconic tunes from the storied nightclub, in October.

The Haçienda was a Manchester club and live music venue that remains associated with Factory Records, New Order and the rise of acid house in the UK. It closed its doors in 1997, and has since been commemorated with a number of international tours, mix CDs and compilations. Haçienda Classiçal is based on an event series of the same name, which saw the venue's former DJs Graeme Park and Mike Pickering playing club classics accompanied by the Manchester Camerata orchestra. It collects orchestral covers of foundational Haçienda tunes like "Blue Monday" by New Order, "Voodoo Ray" by A Guy Called Gerald, "Good Life" by Inner City and "Strings Of Life" by Derrick May. The compilation is executive produced by former New Order bassist Peter Hook together with producer Phil Murphy.

And Armand Van Helden's "U Don’t Know Me" wasn't released until 1998 - a year after the club closed. It's more likely that JohNick's "The Captain" (the instrumental foundation of "You Don't Know Me"), released in 1996, was on the turntables.

I don't think New Order are particularly superstitious.

They performed Blue Monday at the Hacienda several times, the first time being a couple of months before the single had been released.

The source I'm referencing (wish I could remember what it is) refers to the 12" single. However, it seems highly unlikely that some DJ wouldn't have spun "Blue Monday" - either the original or a remix. Probably just some crap rumor.

The Hacienda Classical came up on the 6 Music interview with Mark Radliffe. The CD is listed on Amazon now. Release date 21st October. The night before on Channel 4 there will be a documentary about it.

The FAC 51 Hacienda club has announced another run of its ‘Hacienda Classical’ concerts featuring classical reworkings of rave anthems.

DJs who played at the famous Manchester club, including Mike Pickering and Graeme Park, will play with local orchestra Manchester Camerata for three shows from April to July next year.

The ‘Hacienda Classical’ concerts are overseen by Peter Hook, the former New Order bassist who ran the Hacienda with his ex-bandmates and now owns the rights to the Hacienda name.

The news coincides with the release of a ‘Hacienda Classical’ album tomorrow and Channel 4 screening a documentary about the first run of concerts. Hacienda House Orchestra is on at 12.05am tonight (October 20).

Songs covered at the concerts have included Armand Van Helden’s ‘You Don’t Know Me’, Rhythim Is Rhythim’s ‘Strings Of Life’ and A Guy Called Gerald’s ‘Voodoo Ray’.

Hook told NME of the concerts: “When we did the first show at Castlefield Bowl, the promoter told me afterwards: ‘You’ve just managed to hold an outdoor rave.’ I hadn’t thought of it like that, but that’s a perfect description. The idea is mad as a box of frogs, but it works.”

the blue monday version is horrible and ridiculous sounding

1. hardly any orchestral parts
2. no bernard on vocals
3. too short

avoid, and spend your money elsewhere.

i'm not even sure i consider this an official release, it sounds like a bad cover version, when there are better ones out there (and i will post some).

the 808 song - pacific state is good, but hardly sounds any different from the original.

Cheers, wasn't tempted to buy this - I saw the TV advert earlier tonight and it looked/sounded awful - who the hell wants to hear an orchestral version of Kid N Play?

most of the songs are NOT orchestral. they only have small portions.

there are plenty of keyboards, drums and guitars still.

if you really want to hear songs like that, listen to the string quartet versions of the songs.

I can remember Kid N Play from when their records came out 'back in the day'(I'll even admit to enjoying watching House Party, possibly the only film that Martin Lawrence can honestly say he earnt his wage from being in),and like most of the hip hop acts from around that time, I don't think anyone wanted to see/hear them 25 years later with an orchestra rather than a DJ.
