Regret is an absolutely perfect pop-single, but i tend to vote for "Special", touches me more.

Yes, Special is... special.
Problem here.. Regret, just like Crystal, was release 1 month before the album.
So in our hearts, it's not "an album track" since we've heard it way before.
I would pick Special too, but Regret is a very good song, and it is part of Republic.. like Barney said himself "Pure New Order Classic"

I picked "Spooky" for the same reason you did "Special"
Tough choice, I love the lyrics and music to both Regret and RIAD. But since Regret is more upbeat and hey, I am a more upbeat kinda guy, I'll say Regret. ![]()
I knew all along that Regret would be the popular choice -- so obvious!
I picked Everyone Everywhere, which I never got tired of and I am very surprised to see it got 4 other votes at this point.

I voted for Everyone Everywhere as well, just listened to a copy from 93(Reading?), sounds incredibly good, especially Barney's guitar solo-intro. The next tour, they should ditch the Get Ready tracks and do some oldies but goodies :D
"Regret" is my pick. "Special" would be a close 2nd and "Everyone Everywhere" would be 3rd. There's just something about "Regret" that gets me excited when I hear it. :D
You are right.I listened to regret a month before republic. But this song is fantastic really.
Why the hell do people hate Liar so much its great! ok my judgement is somewhat clouded as i am a true FAN ;) but its really not that bad! If you dont like it you are dismissing a carefully crafted piece of music from a band you allegedly like...
It wouldnt have made it onto the album if it was crap! you know how Barneys fussy over these things!
I even like Times Change, it has a haunting feel to it.

See my list above. I agree on both.
Liar is horse sh!t, pure and simple. Horrible lyrics, horrible, lazy drum work, horrible musical arrangement, tired and weak melody, anemic vocal performance, and putrid performance in general. I don't think being a true fan has anything to do with appreciating it. Even the Beatles released the occasional dud, New Order thus cannot be expected to be exempt from the occasional cr@ppy release either.
Special, by a nose over Regret.
Regret-immense, but Special has such a gorgeous finale so it wins out, though they stand miles higher than anything else on the album.
Everyone Everywhere-exceptional track, should have been a single. Horrible sounding live though.
Times Change-the pseudo rapping is weak, but otherwise its beautiful.
Avalanche-boy Gillian has a beautiful voice. Gorgeous.
After that the whole rest of the album is garbage more or less (with Young Offender being mildly tolerable).
I'm gonna go fer Special an all, Regret was a single, and I tend to go fer non single songs on polls like this as well. As fer Liar, I like it an all....seriously......Chemical on the other hand![]()

I voted for Special and many on this board know full well its my fave NO track :D
However your comments on Liar need serious editing ;)
What a superb comeback single Regret was. Expectation levels for Republic were huge after hearing it. Turned out to be a massive disappointment for me though. Regret,Everyone Everywhere & Special the only standouts.
Regret. it's just about as good as pop gets. only LWTUA is popping into my head as a superior pice of pop perfection. LWTUA is, in my opinion, the best song of all-time (and thus the best pop song ever, as well).

Well, listen to it again, would be my advise. In contrary to all that has been said before (producer, songs, bass-thin, blah blah blah) I think 'Republic' is a hell of an album, which gratified every expectation and hope I had for a comeback album. An truly underrated gem, with 'Regret' as its crown jewel.
Regret all the way. Republic just seems too scatter-shot for my listening tastes. Then again, 'The Top' album by The Cure is pretty scatter-shot too, but I dig it. Something just didn't sit right with me with Republic.
I see I'm the only one so far voting for Times Change. Why everyone loves Regret is beyond me, I can name 9 tracks better than that, only World is worse ... Special would be my second choice, and I like Chemical as well. The lyrics may be crap but I love the tune.
I went with Liar. I have no idea why I just happen to like and enjoy that song the most. I'm one of the few people who really likes this whole album but for some reason I just like Liar best.
Also, if you don't like it, then just say you don't like it. These "purists" who give technical specs on songs "the weak drumline" and "lazy lyrics" are the type of people who probably wear organic sunglasses, write poetry with their feet, and refer to song genres as "flavours".

Like David Church said, this could be New Order's 'The Top'. But both albums seem to show their strengths long after their first release.I have even got into 'World'live since Retro came out. My favourite is 'Special'
Psyched people are voting for Special--it's so under-rated!!! I just dumped a relationship when this came out, and was drunk on the stairs often! What times!
- Everyone Everywhere
- Chemical
- Times Change
- Young Offender
- World (The Price of Love)
- Liar
- Ruined in a Day
- Avalanche
- Spooky
- Special
- Regret
Of the non-single songs off Republic, Special comes a very close second to my main choice, Regret.
I don't know why, but World was always the most appealing song to me from Republic, then Regret, then a couple of other songs, and then the album tanks
tristan, i thought i told you to stop smoking that sh*t!! it can do serious damage!! ![]()
my list goes like this:
RIAD Times Change (i think there is some neil tennant influence on this one) Special Avalanche Everyone Everywhere Young Offender Spooky Liar Chemical Regret World
and i would also like to say that this album does have a special nostalgia. i can't really find anything 'wrong' with it, but i can only listen to it when i am in the right mood.
"Regret" for me. I remember buying "Republic" and how dissapointed i was when listening to it after the excitement of hearing "regret". The album was a let-down for me, it's not a bad album, it just didn't do anything for me.
I'm going for Regret on this one. There's a few gems on there, though; Special comes to mind.
