Bernard's voice

Bernard has a wonderful voice, though I believe Danny Kirwan possesses a natural voice more perfect. From Ceremony and Movement and Procession and EGG and Temptation to PCL, he gets a little rowdy and he speaks words , and gets bitchy. By low life he is finding more catchiness, gusto, and wildness. But he does not need to scream or emote ever . His highest register , I think , is during Special, when he sings "over". Not very high , not whiney, just fine. High voices creep me out. He sings 3 songs by other writers very well plus makes heater and ghetto more interesting Turn the Heater On Can't Find My Way Home In the Ghetto

So, therefore , Bernard is the best singer of all time

Bernard is a country mile off being the best singer of all time but he is by the same distance my all time favourite singer.

Like many, say Ian Curtis or Lou Reed etc, he is not technically gifted, but whatever he does makes every song better.

So he must be pretty good.

He can sometimes sound the shittiest singer of all time (ie live) but sometimes the best (BLT, Lonesome Tonight, True Faith,1963, Run, Shellshock).

Something happened after Raise The Pressure (not sure what) and since then he seemed to sing with a lisp and couldn't pronounce "r"'s properly.

Turn is probably my favorite Bernie vocal.

Live? I like his out of tune singing. But when he reels off lines with an extended "R", it is horrible.

Thanks for sorting that out. QED. Bernard became a more professional singer towards the end of the 80s when NO became a more professional live act. Paradoxically, it was the haphazard nature of the gigs that made them less perfect but more enjoyable.
