normally, i'd support anything barney does...but i vote for revenge cuz i know it's gonna get a lot of slack. and i acutally think one true passion is a great record...and whatever is bad about it, i just take it in good humour in its overall dated-ness.

actually, back in 1990, i was "rooting" for Hooky's project to do well... i felt Electronic was an ego trip.

its funny how Revenge is usually described as "wretched" and "industrial"(??? i guess in sorta in a lite Front 242 way, but c'mon "industrial"?) by a lot of reviewers, I think they were just put off by the silly song titles and silly soft porn sleazy cover girls, prolly did not even listen. and it seems like a lot of reviewers are just plagurizing other reviewers, because they never really heard the record.

that said, in retrospect, One true passion is pretty unlistenable, very dated. 7 Reasons is nice. most of the lyrics on the record are very amateur. and what, could he only get one simple synth keyboard?, you think he coulda used a little more diverse equipment? a weak record from a pro who shoulda took it more serious, and he admits later that he played away from his strengths.

The Other Two and You seems like about three songs to start and then a bunch of filler to me, not exactly inspired songwriting to me. And Stephen Hague can sure be bland when less inspired.

I really wanted to like Twisted Tenderness, and while it has some of Barney's most personally lyrics, the songs mostly fall very flat on initial listens, and i gave up trying.

I voted for Revenge, 'cos One True Passion is fucking great, sounds entirely New Order-like, but all of them have their own brilliant moments, as "Disappointed" and "Tighten Up" from Electronic, "Sweet Lips" and "What Do You Want..." from Monaco and "Tasty Fish" from TO2.

I never liked Revenge. Peter Hook seemed like a cartoon character of himself. Sorry, Gillian, but it has to be Electronic. Johnny plays a mean harmonica.

gonna go for monaco, i really enjoy the two albums. i think they stand the test of time better than any of the others.

It was my fantasy of a PSB-NO collaboration (more or less) come to life. Disappointed is still one of my fave songs of all time and Johnny Marr is hands down one of the best guitarists ever. And Barney and Neil do a DAMN FINE duet on POAS.

I think they each had excellent moments.

Electronic - Their first album was classic. The second, Raise The Pressure, musically it was pretty good, some of the lyrics were a bit weird though. The third album, Twisted Tenderness I couldn't get into at all.

Other Two - They came up with two really great pop albums and I do believe their 2nd was just as good as the first so they were consistent.

Monaco - Music For Pleasure was excellent! It was probably the most NO sounding out of all the side projects but that's not a bad thing. I listened to that album for months after I got it. The second one I couldn't really get into though, felt like it lost something.

Revenge - Haven't heard anything but them so I can't comment.

I'm a big fan of Electronic, so it was an easy pick. Their first album ranks equal to the best things New Order has put out. One of the best records of the 90's without a doubt. Initially, 'What do you want from me' lured me into buying Monaco, only to find out the rest of the album very mediocre indeed. And Pottsy's voice is just a meagre copy of Bernard's. The Other Two and Revenge? Listened once, when they were released, in the record store, but in both cases there were many, many better albums to buy, which I did.

It was some time ago that I voted for Monaco but I think I can now explain.

Firstly, the Electronic albums are technically the best. No problems there. I have them all & I still listen to them.

But Monaco, especially M4P, just appeal to me more personally.

Perhaps its just cos they sound most like Neworder of the sides projects. Perhaps I still hold Barney largely responsible for the split(s) they went through. (Although I know I shouldn't.) Perhaps its cos I am gutted that some seriously class Electronic stuff would have been so much better with a sprinkling of Hookybass and that all that effort could have been directed towards a better Neworder effort than Republic. Perhaps its that I've met Hooky but not any of the others.

Whatever. Long may they all continue to make the music that thrills me so.
