Fingers crossed that someone gets it recorded so that non-UK viewers can see it.

Almost forty years to the day of Joy Division's TV debut, "New Order: Decades" which will air on Saturday 22nd September at 9pm on Sky Arts is a unique and timely feature-length film about one of the UK’s most original and truly iconic bands.
Part concert, part documentary, this film follows the band’s preparations in the re-staging of their acclaimed collaboration So It Goes.. with the artist Liam Gillick and the 12-piece synthesiser orchestra that spectacularly captured the headlines during Manchester International Festival 2017. The complexities extend beyond the technical and logistical: this is a band that rarely looks backwards, yet for this project they had to reflect on - and de-construct – the band’s history, in order to create something very new.
With full access to New Order and their collaborators, this film is an unprecedented and intimate celebration of their story and their music. Through personal interviews with the band members and close collaborators including Gillick and art director Peter Saville, 'New Order: Decades' offers a rare chance to enter the band's private world, understand the visual philosophy of their aesthetic and design, and witness their collaborative, creative processes first hand. The full-length New Order and Joy Division song performances featured in the film - captured from the spectacular concert, designed by Gillick and augmented by the synth orchestra - look and sound simply incredible. They also serve as a perfect cross section of the musical journey the band have undertaken in their incredible career over the last four decades, and the perfect soundtrack to this very special film.

Looking at a couple of bits quoted above (namely "Part concert, part documentary" and "The full-length New Order and Joy Division song performances featured in the film...") seem to point to it being only a few songs. I can't imagine that the programme would be long enough to include both a documentary and a 1h30m (or so) gig.
If we assume that the programme is 1:30 - 2:00 long, there might be a chance of 6-8 songs, with documentary bits intertwined.
I guess there's always a chance that, once shown on TV, it might get a DVD/BD release in an expanded format (like the NewOrderStory was). It would be a shame to have this footage completely filmed but only partly released.

Well, I can kind of see your point in that journalists often do go over the same ground.
But, I'll ask you this question. How weird would it be if they didn't mention Joy Division? You know, something along the lines of 'New Order were formed by three guys and a girl from the North West of England in 1980' and leave it at that. Absolutely no mention of JD whatsoever. Like they never happened.
You'd be a bit surprised, wouldn't you? You'd also think there was a case of sloppy research having been done.
Additionally, it would hardly be a documentary about the band without some mention of JD. It would be like having a documentary about Lynyrd Skynyrd and never mentioning the plane crash.
I'm guessing that the documentary will be mainly about the MiF gigs, but you still need a point of reference for the band; some idea of their history. After all, it's not just us 'fans' who may be watching. And, even if everyone watching it is aware of JD / Ian, it's still an interesting and important part of the band's history. Something to make the viewer more invested in the documentary. Spice it up a bit, if you like...

This. Exactly. Me too.
I was discussing this recently with someone. I would say that a fair proportion of my love for the band comes from their history. Not as much as their music obviously, but it adds that additional depth.
If you compare them to any of my other favourite bands (Depeche Mode, The Chameleons, The Comsat Angels, The Smiths etc.), New Order are just 'more'.
The bands I've listed, much as I love their music, they don't really have anything else to offer. Their history is pretty much summed up along the lines of 'school friends get together, form a band, make some music, split up / founder member leaves'. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But it doesn't really make for very interesting reading / watching etc.
New Order have the whole Joy Division / Ian episode, Factory Records (and it's impact on British music and Manchester), The Haçienda (ditto), Saville's sleeves, non-promotion of themselves and their records (during the glory days) etc.
There's so much more to this band. Hence why I never get bored of reading books about them, watching interviews and documentaries on them etc.
I love Depeche (circa 1984-1993 to be specific) but, really, I can't imagine wanting to read too many books about them. They've made great music but apart from Clarke and Wilder leaving and Dave's near-death drug overdose, they're a fairly ordinary band that haven't really set the world alight in their other endeavours (i.e. outside of the actual songs recorded). Mute were great but they weren't Factory and they didn't seem to have the same sort of 'anything goes' attitude of Factory. Mute also promoted the Hell out of DM (Chegger's Plays Pop and Wogan appearances anyone?). However great Mute were, in comparison with the cavalier attitude of Factory and their crazy and wonderful ideas, they were very much like a normal record label.
I now feel kind of dirty having slagged off DM, as I'm a big fan. I do love them. They just didn't bring as much to the party as JD/NO. To use a cliched rock metaphor, New Order's amps really did go to 11.
So, I say embrace that history. It's part of what makes the band so special.
That's what winds me up! So much talk, not enough music. I am a glass half-empty kinda guy.

Read something about the doc will be shown this weekend at Festival no 6. 1pm til 2.10 pm on one of the days. So the doc is not much more than an hour long? Thought it’d be 1.1/2 to 2 hours but probably it’ll be 1.1/2 hours air time but 20 minutes of that will be frickin ad breaks so 70 minutes of the actual doc.
Well that's a bit disappointing. Was kind of hoping for at least 1:30 of material, maybe 2 hours.
I suppose there's a possibility that an expanded version may get released on DVD / BD, a la NewOrderStory. It would be nice to get a disc with a longer documentary + a complete MiF gig.
I am attending Festival No.6 right now. The timetable on the official app is wrong, the program should be 1:00-2:40pm. I couldn’t catch the first 50mins though, it was the first day of the fest and the logistics didn’t allow me to get there in time alas. I saw the second half of the doc, that contained the Vienna and Turin scenes — I assume the first half contained the MIF scenes. The performed numbers in the part I saw are Subculture, Your Silent Face and Decades. Lots of interviews with band members, Joe Daddell, Liam Gillick and the RNCM students who played synths, as well as some key persons surrounding the band, Peter Seville, Dave Haslam, John Savage et al. Some really interesting rehearsal and behind-the-scenes footage there. A great doc (even if judging from the part I managed) never to be missed. After the screening, Stephen and Gillian (re)appeared on stage — they had also done before the screening, apparently. To the question about the collaboration with the synth ensemble , “Will you do it again?”, Gillian replied, “It’s unlikely...” The audience gave a collective sigh of disappointment, “Oh...” Gillian hastily added, “But you never know.”

This is very heartening. Can't wait to see this now.
Incidentally, I was in Portmeirion on Friday for different reasons. I'm a massive fan of The Prisoner, with it being my favourite TV show of all time (easily). I've been watching a lot of it recently and thought to myself that I'd take a trip to Portmeirion, as I hadn't been there for years. Stupidly, I completely forgot that 'Festival No. 6' was on and, when I got there, it was (obviously) closed to the general public.
A four hour drive (round trip) for nothing. The one weekend of the year when the village is closed and I happened to pick that very weekend to drive all the way there.
It's my own fault. Can't believe that after talking about it on this thread, the festival completely slipped my mind. Even more annoying was that I was even going to ring up beforehand to book a table in one of the restaurants, but decided against it. If I had of done, I'd have saved myself the wasted journey.
I'm either too old or too foolish. Probably both.

When it was broadcasted in Japan for the first time in the Spring of 1969 (one and a half year after its original airing in Britain — things took a long time in those days), The Prisoner gave a huge impact on me as a young boy, one that has lasted to this day. I had since dreamt of visiting Portmeirion, “The Village”, for a long long time. The news that New Order would play as the Sunday grand headliner of the first FN6 in 2012 was therefore an icing on the cake for me. They took the stage with The Prisoner’s theme, instead of the usual one, played for the introduction on the background. The male members wore the iconic Patrick MaGoohan/No.6 black blazer with white lines along the lapel except Gillian who was in green cape and a hat, the Villager women’s costume in the drama. And all of them pinned a badge with a number on it on their chest! For the encore, a number of “the rovers” were unleashed to the crowd, bouncing over their heads during LWTUA — a tradition that have since continued for the festival’s Sunday closing headliner every year. Definitely one of the most bizarre, quirky performances in their entire career. Sadly this year’s FN6 is announced to be the last one, the organizers find it unsustainable to run. Last night headliner Franz Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos turned up in No.6 blazer on stage. On one occasion he uttered the word, “l need INFORMATION.” When their set was over, The Prisoner’s theme was played through the PA speakers in full blast, sending off the festival attendees back home. All of this gave me a sense of full circle completed. Hopefully “Be seeing you” again.

I'm a little too young to remember it first time around (I wasn't born for another few years) but picked up it when it was re-shown later on Channel 4. I actually own the show 6 times on DVD / BD, which is a little worrying. It's one of the only TV shows / movies where I watch special features on the DVDs, such is the depth to the programme. So, if there are different features on different discs, I tend to get them. The latest '50th Anniversary' edition is rather wonderful with some cool features included.
The fact that I missed that New Order performance at Portmeirion is one of my life's major regrets. It was at a time when I wasn't frequenting any boards etc., so didn't hear about the gig until the day after. Therefore, I missed what would've been one of the seminal cultural moments of my life. The whole idea of having both my favourite band and TV show combined is incredible and I'm still very annoyed I missed it. Sounds like it was awesome too. Curse my bad luck. :-(
A similar thing happened with the Jodrell Bank gig; I found out about that after the event. New Order under a giant radio telescope - that sounds pretty great too.
Never properly watched The Prisoner in full, only a few episodes here n there when it was repeated on tv sometime in the 80s.Have never been to Portmeirion but it's something i really want to do sometime.That's a bummer Festival no 6 is no longer after this year's because it's unsustainable![[:(]](/emoticons/frown.gif){kind=small}
I listened live to New Order's set there in 2012, 6Music had it on live on the Sunday night and New Order sounded on fire that night.Still have the recording, got it from somewhere soon after, possibly it was NotAmod who provided a link and download for it.I remember reading the report that Gillian was wearing a cape and hat for the gig and googled obsessively for images of that but only ever really found a distant , slightly blurred pic.
I did manage to get to the Jodrell Bank gig in July 2013, a memorable evening.All the visuals projected on to the telescope and, i think, Steve had created some new music that was played while some more great visuals were projected on to the telescope before New Order came back on for an encore.Still have the video from my phone of that bit where Steve's new composition was played with the stuff on the telescope.

Yep that's it.Can no longer find the clip i recorded on my laptop but i did upload it to YouTube back in 2013.It's a minute longer than that clip you linked to.

You should definitely try and pay a visit. It's a very special place with a unique atmosphere.
My only reservation about visiting is that it kind of kills the mystique of The Prisoner as a TV series, once you've been there - Seeing McGoohan struggling to escape from The Village, when you know that 100 yards behind him is a bus stop to Porthmadog. ![[:d]](/emoticons/biggrin.gif){kind=small}
But, seriously, if you're anywhere near, go and see it. You won't be disappointed. It's even worth a lengthy drive - just make sure it's open beforehand. ![[;)]](/emoticons/wink.gif){kind=small}

That footage of Transmission above includes shots of 'Rover' (The Village's guardian) menacingly on the beach, along with a sound clip of 'Dem Bones', which was famously used in the highly controversial last episode of the series, 'Fall Out'.
In the clip, you can see Bernard, Tom etc. were wearing the blazers, as previously mentioned. Incidentally, I've always wanted one of those blazers. You can buy them from The Prisoner shop at Portmeirion, which is actually in No. 6's fictional house in The Village (i.e. McGoohan's character's house).
You can also clearly see Gillian wearing the cape and hat favoured by the female villagers at around the 4:08 mark. Again, incidentally, McGoohan himself does get to wear a cape once during the series - during the famous 'human chess' scene in the episode 'Checkmate' (I'm geeking out a bit here, sorry!).

Yep think i saw that clip back then, the shots of Rover are followed by 2 guys bringing a Rover on to stage.The idea i recall reading was that they would throw the Rover into and over the crowd but the smoke machines that went off just before they did were so excessive nobody could see anything and the energetic dry ice blowers possibly prevented it from getting off the stage and it blew back to the rear of the stage lol.
Still, i got a screen grab just now of Gillian and have added it to my folder where i have the recording of the gig

Yeah, for instance, when I visited “the dome” on top of the hill that was used as the residence of No.2, the headquarter office of the village in the drama, I found it actually a tiny chamber, not a huge, cavernous hall seen on TV. Quite an anticlimactic experience that was lol.

This jogged my memory, and yes, your recollection/quote is correct. The Rovers actually didn’t bounce up and down over the crowd’s heads. And probably there weren’t a number of them, just one.![[rolling]](/emoticons/rolling.gif){kind=small}
And it was barely seen by us audience because of the smoke. I mixed it up with the later years at FN6 perhaps.
Some of their peculiar live presentations of recent years, e.g. Portmeirion, Jodrell Bank, Warehouse Project, Castlefield Bowl, Granada Studios — I was there at all of them.

It has a two hour time slot scheduled: 9pm- 11pm, as per Sky's listing Here or Here. I guess you can't expect much longer than that (well, unless it was two hours without adverts on the BBC). You may notice that it's followed by NO live in Glasgow, 11pm to 1.15am.
I just need to figure out if any of the Kodi channel packages have Sky Arts as one of their channels. Cause I sure as hell don't have Sky Arts. Anyone here know which Kodi package may have it? I know Kodi isn't great (buffering being the subject of many a Youtube video), but sometimes the less popular channels don't buffer. If anyone has an android device (eg Samsung tablet) you can legally put Kodi (or it's "fork": SPMC) on there, courtesy of their totally legit website. It's just the free channel packages that aren't quite legal!

I've vaguely heard of this Kodi thing but have't the foggiest exactly what it is, where i would get it or how to set it up.Is it some pirate box that enables you to watch any channel you want or something? It allows you to watch more television? I need to watch less television not more.
I haven't got Sky Arts on my tv package with Virgin Media so i'll just have to obtain the doc somehow at a later date after it's aired.

I have Sky Arts via Now TV's Entertainment package. If you are in the UK and don't want the commitment of Sky, this is the way to go. You can cancel and re-subscribe at any time. I think it's about £7-£8 per month.
I believe you can also get a 14-day free trial if you aren't already a member. This may be a good way for fans to watch the programme for free; subscribe for free, watch the programme, cancel the subscription. It only works if you've never had a Now TV sub before though, I think. Also, as far as I know, NowTV is UK only (isn't it?).
Failing that, I'm sure someone will be clever enough to transfer their recording to a video file that can be shared (it's beyond my technical capabilities, sadly).
Yeah i was looking at the Now tv option today.They are advertising a 14 day free trial but when i click on it it keeps going to a pay £7.99 a month option.I did have a free trial last year when i wanted to watch Twin Peaks:The Return though the later episodes of the series i had to obtain from elsewhere as my free trial had expired.If i can work out how to get the page to stay on sign up for free trial i'll go with that but as i've had a subscription for a free trial before i guess that rules me out , unless i try a different email address.But i'd have to watch it on my laptop and on which i don't know how to capture video.I know how to copy video from my tv box but to watch Now TV on my tv i think i have to have a Now TV gadget.Oh it's all too complicated, i'll just wait til it's ahem, available, on peer to peer sites.
Well things are looking up.I've chatted to Virgin Media today and negotiated a package upgrade for a 12 month price that is cheaper than i was paying.It goes up after 12 months but i can simply cancel at that point and go back to my old package.So, i now have extra channels including Sky Arts and faster broadband speed (well, we'll see if it actually is faster but i'm not too fussed about that) and a better deal on my line rental.So, i now have Sky Arts and will record the doc tomorrow night and copy to my laptop.That's a relief. All set now.

Discovering New Order.Yeah it was originally shown in July 2015.Watched and recorded it at the time.Basically the story we all know and talking heads giving their twopenny's worth on the band and history though most of them weren't that familiar , to me at least.One was the guy i think who hosted the Sky Arts live acoustic thing Bad Lieutenant did back in 2009, one was a 6Music presenter (or former presenter) i didn't recognise and one was an Absolute Radio DJ (though don't let that put you off) and maybe one or two others.It's alright, nowt special.Think it was just knocked together pre Music Complete and the start of the build up to the release of that album.
Hmm... just checked to see if Virgin Media have activated my new tv package including Sky Arts.They have and Sky Arts is on there but not Sky Arts HD. To get it in HD it seems requires a more expensive package. Bit disappointed at that but I’ll just have to settle for the non HD version, better than nothing.

Mods - Is there any way to fix this SPAM thing? I've fallen foul of it a few times. It's just annoying that, after such a good, high-profile documentary, it's not been easy to discuss it. There was nothing in the text I was trying to post (no embedded links etc.). It was just plain text. I tried to change the formatting a few times, but to no avail.
Initially, I had given up locating a way to watch as I refuse to pay for Sky however my missus has 'Now TV' included with her phone contract and so in the end I was able to log in and stream it on my PC. I cannot believe for a paid subscription service that Sky still rams adverts down your throat. Mind you, without the football nobody would go near them.
Anyway, it was worth the effort.
The documentary - as others have noted - is fantastic and a must-see for fans. I hope they release it properly in some form or if not at least put out a live album celebrating the project with a composite of the best tracks from each of the nights. I assume it was all recorded. The 'new' intro to Your Silent Face sounds incredible and I remember it distinctly from the two shows I attended in Manc & Vienna. Not to mention the 'finished' outro on Vanishing Point. It would be really nice to be able to listen to all that again. Perhaps it could be a crowd-funded Pledge Music exercise as they did with NOMC15 a while ago? I'm sure lots of people would dip their hands in their pocket and cough up.
The students performing a ukulele version of 'Decades' towards the end was an unexpected highlight. Talented people.
Even Hook's historical bass contributions received a compliment by Bernard. He didn't name him but was mentioned as the 'previous bass' ![[:p]](/emoticons/tongue.gif){kind=small}
The split was not covered at all (probably wise).

Just as an aside, if anyone is watching the documentary through NowTV on catch-up, the ads are thankfully removed from it (although you can see where they should fit, as there are 'New Order: Decades' graphics that appear every 15 mins or so).
I can only echo what others have said a brilliant documentary. Let’s hope that the band now force themselves back in the studio next year for at least an ep of tracks for late in 2019? Nice to hear Barney praise Hooky.

Brilliant how it starts with tentative beginning with the intro to Elegia.You just know from there it's going to be an amazing film.Some great humour from Steve and Bernard, mind boggling explanations of how the shows were all put together that even stretched technological wizard Steve to the point of almost "biting off more than he can chew", the songs shown were captured fantastically with a real catchy energy coming from the students playing behind the slats, great shots of Bernard exploring Vienna.... i could go on.I just can't get my head round how complicated and difficult it must have been to put the shows together. The film really gathers momentum in the final stretch, culminating at the end with the performance of Decades in Vienna.Just wow.
Just watched on catchup. Really good insight into how it was all put together with some nice dry humour from Bernard & Steve.
I'm sure one person may be sitting silently fuming although they did get some screen time and a mention.

Nice to see so many of the RNCM students getting a bit of time in front of the camera too - can you just imagine signing up for this with an 'unspecified major band' and walking into the room and seeing the human drum machine sat there like that? (And nice to put a face to the lively silhouette that was No.12.)
Finishing on Decades and the outro to Vanishing Point over the end credits - jebus that was good.
The gigs' recordings must be put together and released. Take my money.

Wonderful to see Disorder played in the studio, however short this clip was.
I wonder why the archive footage (Granada Reports, The Perfect Kiss video, Blue Monday 1988 video etc.) was so poor. Surely they could've sourced higher quality clips? The Shadowplay footage was in a terrible state, quality-wise. It looked like it had been taken off the 'Substance 1977-1988' promo video that's been bootlegged numerous times.
Nice to see Bernard with a Gibson Les Paul Special 'Double-Cut' in the studio, as well as his usual SG. I don't think I've seen him play one since about 1982.
The interviews / footage with the students were great. Really interesting to see the process for the project and also to see how this band are still affecting young people today.
Steve being Steve. What a joy the guy is. Charming, witty and wonderful to hear him talk about the project. I seriously can't wait to read his book. Hopefully it doesn't get delayed any further.
Bernard being thoughtful enough to mention other people's significant contribution to the band - Tom coming into his own on Music Complete, most of the hard-work of the project being done by Steve etc. Hooky has portrayed Barney as a bit of a prima donna / glory-hunter in his books. To me, he never comes across as such in interviews; always willing to give credit to the other members of the band. Which brings me nicely onto -
Hooky's presence, or lack there of. As the documentary was on the 'So It Goes' gigs, it was relatively easy to side-step the Viking elephant in the room. However, it was very nice to hear Sumner's (genuine) praise for the 'previous Bass'. 'Great', according to Sumner. Yes, it was. Truly.
Although the choice of tracks played was great, I'd have loved to hear some of the more guitary ones (Dream Attack etc.). Also, Barney needs a guitar hung around his neck. If only to stop him doing that 'Jamiroquai dance thing' he seems to have introduced into his performances.
Barney's vocals sounded pretty great throughout.
'Decades' (the song) was awesome. A truly memorable way to end both the gigs and the documentary.
Anyway, those were some of my thoughts. I may post others once I've had time to digest.
A magnificent documentary and one that I'm hoping gets an official Blu-Ray release. It needs to be properly preserved. With any luck, if they do release it, they'll include either an extended cut and/or the full gig as an extra. Fingers crossed.

It seems it didn't like me abbreviating The Perfect Kiss or Blue Monday 1988. Once I got rid of the abbreviations, the post went through fine. Maybe the board looks for words that aren't English and rejects the whole post as Spam.

And since I don't like to post pure begging posts, I'd better write something else:
I'm really really pleased that both the band and Sky Arts (and everyone else involved) felt this whole project was worth doing in the first place, but also worth revisiting and documenting as they have done. It's been a bit quiet since Music Complete (which was really solid IMHO) in other respects, and with ShadowParty appearing I started to wonder again if NO was sliding into hiatus.
Edit: kindly supplied with an SD copy, thanks anonymous benefactor! :) I'm still on the hunt for an HD copy. Going to ask my 'rents to record the HD repeat tonight, and if they do, I will see if I can extract a copy from them.
Really hope the set gets an audio release. I was not really all that impressed hearing a few tracks on YouTube etc after the shows but after watching and hearing this, wow...KW1 and Decades just glisten don't they?

The only person I ever recall complaining about the amount of synths used was Hook himself. I don't remember any fans EVER saying that in the 30+ years that I've been following the band.
If we New Order fans didn't want synths, we'd be listening to The Smiths or The Stones Roses or something. Not sitting around complaining about how a band famed for their innovative use of synths were using too many of them.
I also don't know how he can judge it's fiction without seeing it (if you can believe that he didn't sneak a peek at the documentary, that is!).
If he had've watched it, he would've seen that it was an honest documentary that didn't focus too much on the past (as that wasn't what the doc was about).
He would've also seen that, on one of the rare occasions when it did revisit the past, his oldest friend say that the 'previous bass' was 'great!'. A comment that he really didn't have to say and, given the amount of horrible comments made towards him and Gillian, was surprising (but pleasant) to hear Barney come out with. I'm guessing that Hooky wouldn't class that comment as 'fiction'. If he'd heard it, I mean.
He does come across as a rather bitter man at times. I was thinking recently that, since the court case, he seems to have mellowed a bit, but this article shows that he still has a grudge.
I'm not sure why he can't just focus on his tour. I guess it's partly the fault of the NME asking him such a loaded question (looking for soundbites etc.). However, the gentlemanly thing to do would be to say something along the lines of:
'I haven't seen it. Was it any good?' if he wanted to be a bit obtuse and non-committal; or even 'I wish the rest of the band the best of luck for the future' if he wanted to come across as the bigger man and someone who had moved on.
I guess he's happy for us all to know just how much it pisses him off that New Order are doing very well without him and also trying to do new things (a 'return to form' LP and the magnificent 'So It Goes' gigs). Personally, if it was me, I wouldn't want the others to know how much it still hurts.
Reading the above back to me, I sound like I have a downer on Hooky. I really don't. I love his work with JD/NO and fully appreciate his ample contribution to both bands. I hope his tour is a success. I won't be going myself, but will be checking out the tour by buying on PledgeMusic. Also, if he decides to write some new songs, I will certainly buy them and give them a good listen.

^ Ok, the quality of this upload/download is very good. But be careful on this DL link folks; it's one of the trickier ones I've encountered. If your internet browser says the DL may be suspicious, you've hit the wrong DL "button" - abort!. You may have to close multiple popups. Make sure your virus protect/security is on, though you may have to switch ad-blocker off.

Had an idea today to download my YouTube upload of Decades using 4K VideoDownloader with the hope that i would end up with the file in a much smaller and manageable size.And it was a success.I now have the doc in a 1GB file.My original MPEG2 capture to my laptop from my tv box ended up with the file being a massive 5GB.Don't know why it ended up like that.So anyway, i have now uploaded the much smaller 1GB version to MediaFire.If you haven't already seen the doc or downloaded the original 5GB file try this.Or if you've already downloaded the 5GB version but would like it in just 1GB try the link.As i've said in the PMs to people i've shared the 5GB to, the picture quality isn't the best as i was unable to record it in HD.It's in standard definition but it's pretty good.

I also captured the audios of the 5 songs aired in Decades.Created a kind of mini album.One or two i didn't quite get how i wanted, for example at the end of Plastic there's audible bit of Bernard talking in the doc after the song finishes and a microsecond is missing from the start of Your Silent Face.But they're good to transfer to your phone or whatever and listen on the go.I uploaded the zip to MediaFire
I was glad to hear the history over again. Saville looks like he wants to create another cover and some singles covers,so they need to get crackin' on the next releases. The show is good , but I prefer the current shows with more magnificent ,or superlative visuals. A cd of all the songs is needed, 5 is not enough. Bernard is not yet hefty, but he is occssionally chubby enough to try yoga, stretching, and switching from desserts to fruit .He could do cartwheels and breakdancing if he had a trainer Bernard's voice would be a great replacement for Attenborough in future BBC documentaries explaining about animals ,making funny quips. New order are so adult like, what if they had put out heavy metal music for teens and 40 years later still putting out heavy metal for teens,it would be sad , unless they kept the TBTHOG look Thank God NO was not a band with makeup and silly costumes

The Granada footage was blown up and cropped to 16:9, it was originally 4:3. That will reduce the quality somewhat.
found a better source but still SD. Shame the thing is shot in hipstervision aka horrible low contrast because dats cool wiv da kids now. Buy a great lens and wreck the picture in post for internet points.
peter saville is excellent value as always. he should do an autobiography and read it for audible.

An odd thing to release, IMHO.
I don't really understand this vinyl revival* thing. You would think that people collecting vinyl these days are generally buying classic 'studio' LPs and wouldn't really be interested in getting a 'best of' compilation. Especially when this particular one was basically just a shameless 'cash-in', when there had been other (better) compilations released by the band. If they were releasing 'Substance 1987', I could totally see people wanting to buy it on vinyl (if they collect vinyl*). But 'Total'? Seems very odd.
* My theory (such as it is) of why vinyl is popular comes down to record labels trying desperately to think of ways to get people of my age-bracket (35-60 year olds), who have the most disposable income, to buy the same album over and over again. They know that people like me have probably:
- bought the original LP on vinyl and / or tape;
- upgraded it to CD when it came out;
- bought the remastered version when it was released; then finally
- bought the 'super-deluxe 16 disc, holographic cover, extra tracks (and a tacky badge)' version.
They therefore have to think of further clever ways (see above examples) to get us to keep buying the same old stuff, from now until the day we die.
So, hey presto, they start telling the world (rightly or wrongly) that vinyl (with all it's pops and crackles and hissing through the stylus) sounds 'warmer' and 'better' and just how John, Paul, George and Ringo would've heard it in Abbey Road, or whatever. So we all go 'mmm - vinyl! Must. Buy. 'Technique'. For. 5th. Time!'.
Now, I'm not saying that 'vinyl' is a con. It is what it is; a viable format for releasing music on. If you think it sounds better than digital media, no amount of persuasion is going to convince you otherwise (and vice versa). No - I like vinyl. Not enough to buy another turntable to replace the one that died on me in the mid-90s, but still.
However, the whole 'getting punters to buy vinyl again' smacks of a gimmick just to sell us the same LPs once again.
Rant over. You'd think I'd feel better about it now. I don't.
I don't collect vinyl because I think it sounds better. After years as a DJ, playing in bands, and working around jet engines, my hearing is sh*t.
I buy vinyl because I like having a tactile, physical object. I like having large-scale artwork and liner notes. I like interacting with the music when I have to flip the side. It keeps me connected to the music where so many people view it as a disposable commodity. I have to make a conscious choice of what I want to listen to from start to finish, instead of streaming whatever playlist and never giving it a second thought. It helps me to be more selective. It helps me pay attention.
And yes, there's a degree of nostalgia cash-in, but I don't mind. I will never get tired of buying a "new" New Order album.
Yeah - that makes total sense. I too love having a physical product to look at when listening to the music. Which is kind of why I kind of dislike (but still subscribe to) Apple Music / Spotify. I buy a tonne of deluxe edition CD sets (much to my wife’s annoyance), just so I can hold the items in my hands. I don’t need to buy them as I can listen to them via streaming services, but I want to ‘own’ these products.
I can also appreciate looking at large scale artwork, especially with New Order’s Saville sleeves. I still love browsing my old vinyl collection (despite not buying any new vinyl). If the much rumoured NO LP box sets come out and include vinyl, I will probably make an exception and buy them, vinyl and all. In fact, if there was a choice between CD only and a CD / Vinyl combo, I’d probably choose the latter just to have the lovely sleeves.
What I’m complaining about, I guess, is really just the marketing gimmick that I see companies selling us. Where you have people telling us that the music is better on vinyl and it’s how the artists meant you to hear it etc.

I like vinyl though and bought a great new Pro-Ject turntable a while back to replace an old 80s Technics one which had become incapable of playing 45s at the correct speed. Some music sounds better on vinyl and some sounds better on CD or FLAC files, kind of tired of that old debate. It is indeed nice to have the big 12” sleeve and putting the needle on the record.
Total came across as “What can we come up with that hasn’t been done before with a New Order greatest hits? I know, let’s put Joy Division and New Order on the same album!”
I guess a hits compilation with Electronic and New Order on the same album would be the next logical step. That’s never been done before. Or a Other Two and Monaco on the same album.
I jest. But the release of Total on vinyl comes across also a bit as just a thing to keep interest in New Order bubbling under. Or that the mooted box set has been delayed/abandoned and something else is needed to fill a gap in releases.
Yep - it does smack a little of trying to keep the embers of interest alive.
Just release those box sets already...

Having attended the original MIF show at Granada Studios, was fortunate to travel to Vienna for the 2nd-night of this & it was just as special.
The Sky Arts airing of the 'Decades' film was a great record of the gig, reconfirmed to me by it being screened at the British Music Experience in Liverpool this week - with brief introductory amble by Dave Haslam, who was as witty as ever.
It would make for a great DVD release - any forum members have insight as to whether anything is on the cards?
As a side-note, Haslam alluded to doing something with Steve for the publishing his upcoming book - maybe along the lines of the Royal Exchange chat he did with Bernard for Chapter & Verse?

I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that an official release was planned at some point (may have just been us fans speculating though). I may be misremembering this but I think the director was also involved in the filming of the Alexandra Palace gig (Mike Christie?), so there was some speculation that both Decades and the gig may get a release.

Decades is getting a screening at the Ace Hotel in Shoreditch next month, followed by a Q&A with the director, Mike ChristeDice
I've booked to go because it looks like I'm never going to get to see it otherwise, and while its not going to be an Imax sized screen in a hotel, it will still probably be bigger than any screen I've got at home to watch it on if it ever gets a DVD/Blu-ray release.

Cheers but I'm going to wait for the screening now, but at least I can go back to that afterwards for repeat viewings.
So I finally got round to seeing this on Saturday at the Ace Hotel in Shoreditch: I'm glad I waited to see it on a reasonably sized screen at a decent volume rather than seeing it on YouTube (it wasn't exactly a THX setup but it was better than seeing it on a PC monitor or TV screen).
I enjoyed it but I wouldn't be in a rush to see it again: nice to see the interviews with the band, Peter Savile, Jon Savage & Co. but it seemed an awfully long time until we got to see a full song. I stuck round for the Q&A with Mike Christie afterwards, during which he mentioned that this won't get a download/dvd release until its been screened in the U.S., they didn't have enough money to film the whole concert in Vienna (there were only two other songs filmed, Shellshock and Vanishing Point that didn't make it into the final film) and also that they are still 'messing about' with the Alexandra Palace footage.
He also mentioned some other projects that he is working on with New Order, but wouldn't say any more than that, so I'm guessing its possible that either some of this years shows are being filmed,or he is/has been working on films to be back projected during these shows.

Thanks for this Ken, it's good to get the info regarding potential DVD release (or lack of) direct from Mike Christie I was fortunate to attend one of the MIF MCR shows & also the 2nd Vienna MIF gig - with 35-yrs of attending NO gigs, the MIF shows are absolutely right up there for me (still pushing artistic boundaries after all these years!) & for selfish reasons, I would love them to get a DVD release. The statement about not having enough money to film the whole of the Vienna concert is interesting as the cameras where certainly there/active throughout …….. to the detriment of audience view at times. I wonder if next years' Miami residency gives the band some scope for again devising something special with Christie?
