This special series of intimate shows took over Stage 1 of Manchester’s iconic Old Granada Studios for five nights in June 2017. Created in collaboration with visual artist Liam Gillick, who has previously presented solo exhibitions at venues such as Tate Britain and MoMA in New York; and orchestrated by composer-arranger Joe Duddell, a fellow son of Manchester and a frequent collaborator with the band, the live show was performed by the band with a 12-strong synthesiser ensemble from the Royal Northern College of Music.

Yes, one full concert, with 3 additional songs from other shows added at the end. Every song is represented.

I haven’t checked the setlists but it looks like tracks 1-15 are the gig from the 13th, with tracks 16-18 being the additional tracks they occasionally ‘swapped in’.

The gig I went to didn’t have Times Change or In A Lonely Place, but played Elegia and Heart & Soul instead. Behind Closed Doors was swapped in on at least one of the other gigs (but not the one I was at).

So, yeah, gigs started with either Times Change or Elegia and ended with Decades. And the three tracks at the end of the CD look to be the ‘extra tracks’.

I don't like Live Albums, they're mostly shit and if they're any good it's down to the studio overdubs added after the fact. That said, I'm looking forward to buying this bastard and playing the fuck out of it.

Also, £12 for the double CD pack? That's a pretty reasonable price, to be fair. £12 for Times Change live, what a time to be alive....

Well they’ve played songs like Vanishing Point and Sub Culture frequently at shows over the past year. But no more outings for Shellshock , Behind Closed Doors etc.

I’ve not heard In A Lonely Place and one or two others from the MIF shows so looking forward to hearing them on the live album

Like stated before, they've incorporated Vanishing Point, Subculture, Ultraviolence into their set. Although everyone here likes the deeper cuts, I don't think the band should cut Blue Monday, True Faith, or Love Will Tear Us Apart. And when you've been a band for 30+ years, you've gotta play your hits.

The only songs I'd wish they cut for deeper tracks would be Crystal (I think once the lyrics are finished the song just drags on), Atmosphere (I think they do a better job with Decades and they HAVE TO play LWTUA), and MAYBE the Perfect Kiss (I really don't get the energy from the bass like when Hooky's done it.)

Funny enough, New Order is one of the very few bands that plays their older material - or their very first song which they still play live today.

I was making a cd of the worst song of each album and chose Times Change from Republic , although maybe it is exciting live. The vivid images of Port Royal suffering and yellow hay , and now understanding why Madonna started singing songs like this the same way Bernard does. He must have influenced everybody back then . And hey , Peter and the Light play long sets , so please New Order, please try playing a 1 1/2 hours set, then it is ok for some resting up for 30 minutes and then come back out and play another hour at least and maybe more, try an acoustic set if that would be easier, or even audience selections for another hour , we know you can do it. Remember when you were young and could party all night , well we oldsters can stay up way past midnight and your young fans are champing at the bit for you guys to play all night, have seances and cool ceremonial type stuff , chill , and still be grooving at sunrise .C'mon Bernard ,make it happen

Interesting choice to bring back and a welcome change from the NO by numbers of 93. Was there a clause in the London contract that every album had to have at least one stinker? Liar, Crock of Shat, Wanking Overtime, Shake it up... I actually remember a Republic review in one of the glossier papers claiming it 'their most consistent work in years' and namechecking 'the chugging Chemical' as a highlight. And you say I'M weird.

Absolutely blew me away how improved it was as a live instrumental to intro the show.

Yeah some of it was broadcast live on the culture section or something of BBC website. Something like that. Memory a bit vague on it now but it was definitely BBC and was online only. Or maybe red button also? Really can’t remember the details but I have the recording of it.

Then I hope they fix the awful synth mistake during the segue from Bizarre Love Triangle to Vanishing Point. A member of the synth orchestra is playing a sound patch from BLT with the modulation wheel all the way up, and it's really loud during the whole intro of Vanishing Point, until either he/she catches the mistake and switches over to the correct sound, or someone at the mixing desk simply turns their volume down.

Got my download first thing and it sounds great, hearing them play the rarer stuff live is a real treat. I must admit, though, that if I didn't know the structure of the gig with all those youths stood in them boxes at the back I'm not sure it would stand out as anything other than a really great live album. I wasn't there but I expected something a little more electronically orchestral, perhaps.

They've put the whole thing on Spotify already. I don't know why they don't wait a couple of months and try to shift some units... Doesn't sound like they've done too much vocal fixing.

My copy was delivered today. Nice item. Sturdy outer sleeve/box. Great pics in the book, well it’s more like a big 12 x 12 pamphlet really.

Amazon said they didn’t receive the CD yet. So nothing for me.

But I do have Spotify and the concert sounds amazing. Great mixing, and even brought some sounds to life that were to low on the you tube version. And fixed the vocals on Shellshock. And fixed the BLT and vanishing point blending part. I even made a playlist that puts the last 3 songs back into the show instead of the end of the show we’re they sound like they don’t belong.

Finally soundboard recordings of Disorder & Decades. I’m very satisfied with this concert. Good job.

Ordered both the vinyl and CD through Music Glue in the U.S. Due to ship today, but no confirmation email yet.

Amazon let me down but my Recordstore copy was waiting for me when I got in.

Just had my first run through and it's fucking brilliant - so many highlights - I felt like I was back in Granada.

What a fucking band. Nothing to touch them.

Overall a good listen, one minor gripe, i'm a little disappointed by the snare sound! I still think this should have been a video rather than audio only release but still very pleased to have it. Glad these gigs have been documented, definitely one of my NO highlights.

Here is a review of the tracks played at a few different shows to encompass all the songs during the shows.

01 Times Change (Live at MIF)

a rather slow instrumental breakbeat track, rather boring and not very inspiring.

02 Who's Joe (Live at MIF)

there's a reason why new order doesn't play these types of tracks very often. because no one really wants to hear this type of midtempo rocker from the latter albums. very standard fare.

03 Dream Attack (Live at MIF)

another slow track, that continues in the same nameless, faceless genre. trying to remember where its from, but since its not memorable, it doesn't really strike any chords. bernards voice is really off on it also.

04 Disorder (Live at MIF)

the first of the joy division tracks. oddly enough, i don't care for them, but its the first sign of energy from the band, so its decent.

05 Ultraviolence (Live at MIF)

now we move onto an actual classic, and interesting song. a rather cool rendition of it, full of rocky guitars, offkilter drums, and some presence finally from bernards voice.

06 In A Lonely Place (Live at MIF)

another nice and moody track, sounds great, but again, not the liveliest track.

07 All Day Long (Live at MIF)

an actual upbeat track, but not one that anybody really remembers. decent guitars, and keyboards on this one.

08 Shellshock (Live at MIF)

an excellent version of this song. great vocals, and recreating the sound of the original. could have been longer though.

09 Guilt Is A Useless Emotion (Live at MIF)

another late era dance tune. this one actually works decent enough. however, bernard needs to work on his delivery. it sounds a little lacking in matching the energy of the tune.

10 Subculture (Live at MIF)

another stand out track, this is definitely one of the highlights of the show. very well done considering the trickiness of getting the sounds to match. different enough to make it interesting.

11 Bizarre Love Triangle (Live at MIF)

the well worn class, and gladly its the richard x remix version, as the other ones have been played to death. so although its decent, its got its place here as the standard track. since they're NOT playing blue monday or true faith.

12 Vanishing Point (Live at MIF)

another lackluster technique era track, which is surprising that that dragged it back out to play. it didn't get much attention back then, and its kind of a so-so track now, with its pseudo-house sound, doesn't work out to well.

13 Plastic (Live at MIF)

from the last album, this is one of the more upbeat tracks that makes it into the concerts lately. a dance track for sure, that works, and represents they can still do them from time to time.

14 Your Silent Face (Live at MIF)

another golden era song, nice additions to it, and its good to see it coming back to the setlist. good tempo and tone. very good.

15 Decades (Live at MIF)

another joy division song, and a rather long one at that. they do a good job at recreating it.

16 Elegia (Live at MIF)

another all time classic, this is what the show should have started out with. hypnotic, grand, and epic. just the short version though.

17 Heart & Soul (Live at MIF)

joy division track, but one that has some frantic tones to it, as always, its good to hear some of the early historical tracks.

18 Behind Closed Doors (Live at MIF)

this bside from crystal, is definitely a lost song. which, although interesting, is a rather odd song to attempt. its rather wordy, and although its about loss, and redemption, you have to wonder why they included it. it's passable, but not very memorable. guess they liked it for the instrumentation.

as a project, this seems to be a pretty cool idea on paper.

visually, it looked cool too. lots of lights, synthesizers, etc.

however, the execution is lacking, the songs don't mesh well together. there's to many slow tracks bringing down the energy.

there's also a lot of inconsistent vocals and singing from bernard.

there's a few standouts : subculture, guilt is a useless emotion, ultraviolence, and shellshock.

bottom line : a well produced, well mixed concert, but lacking in content

they tried to vary the song listing, but too many subpar songs made the cut, when they probably shouldn't have. its nice trying to play deep cuts, and lesser known album tracks, but maybe they should have actually picked ones that were more upbeat, or ones that might get better recognition. but thats the trick isn't it, trying to balance fan favorites, with songs that never get played. doesn't always work though.

not really worth getting the deluxe, but worth streaming or downloading for a taste of some of them.

it would be a C grade or 2.5 / 5 star rating.

I disagree completely -1. It's a great live album, with some tracks we've not heard live for many years in interesting arrangements, aimed very much at us long term fans. Makes a great change to their festival sets, which are aimed at a different audience. It doesn't always have to be lively!

I thought the MiF gigs were a triumph. Brilliant both aurally and visually.

At the first one i must admit that i was seriously underwhelmed with the set list.....i had in my head songs i hoped they'd play and felt like it was a missed opportunity

Absofuckinglutely. It baffles me that, even after all this time, people still want live albums full of the same old shit they've been getting for decades (no pun intented). I reckon if New Order put out one more live album with Blue Bastard Monday on it I may well physically assault members of the band. Probably the little one on the bass.

It’s interesting to get a different view from someone living up to their name -1 and to balance out opinion on A NO site which by its very nature to be biased but to my ears the album is superb. I was Lucky enough to attend One of the MiF events and IMO one of the very best NO events I have attended. I loved it they played all day long shocked me by playing behind closed doors (didn’t play this track on the event I attended but sounds great on my vinyl version) sounds like mr -1 does not rate Technique but I’m sure the majority of new order fans loved the fact VP and Dream attack was played.

A wonderful record to own to document one of the best live events of any band I have attended.

I’m sure -1 received a different record to the rest of us. It’s bloody fantastic!

its one thing to have a special performance, such as the orchestral one in Australia, which i would have preferred.

and another one, which is much more of a visual experiment along with the audio.

i'm well aware, it would have been a lot more interesting in person, if you went to the first show, and didn't know they were going to play an eclectic mix of tracks.

it's totally another thing, to listen to all the tracks, in a different context. especially when we know exactly what tracks they are, and why they've picked them more for visual impact, than the actual song.

i still don't think anyone was actually asking to hear who's joe, dream attack, all day long, or behind closed doors.

the fact remains that if band has barely bothered to play these songs ever before, why should we care.

especially, when they have a huge catalog of songs that haven't been played in ages, and would have been a lot better choices.

Bernard's vocals sound surprisingly good for a live show. Has he spent the last two years overdubbing them in the studio?

Apart from that (which I guess is not really a complaint) - I really enjoyed it. The new arrangement of YSF is beautiful, and Elegia...well let's just say I suspect Hooky won't be happy that they did such a fantastic job of what used to effectively be his big solo

It really is a tremendous achievement. Even songs I don't normally care for (Who's Joe?, Behind Closed Doors) shine. The standouts for me are Times Change, Disorder, Subculture, Vanishing Point (especially how it segues out of Bizarre Love Triangle), and Your Silent Face, but I love the whole thing from top to bottom.

If I could pick any one song from their entire discography I wish they'd included, it would be Special. I think it's a beautiful, underrated song, and would sound immense with the keyboard orchestra. They attempted to play it once on the Republic tour, but Barney botched the lyrics. :(

You know, I’ve been listening to some early gigs over the last few days. Ones where they run the likes of Everything’s Gone Green into 586 into Temptation, for one long medley, or the one where they did a 20 minute plus version of Ultraviolence. Incredible stuff.

I have to agree; the most ridiculously brilliant band to ever exist.

The MiF gigs are recent examples of their sublime talent.

Totally agree! Was thinking exactly this yesterday when I was listening to Hooky's Technique / Republic show on Spotify. He did a pretty good job of Special (and did the best he could with the rest of the Republic material) - much better than the unintentionally comical NO attempt you mentioned.

Really enjoying the album. Live Hey Joe nags at me even more than usual, the feeling there is a truly great NO tune in there to be found – mainly in the refrain and the quick bass and synths – and they didn't quite find it.

Fellow ADL fan checking in. Dead-set understated album track classic.

There's a moment where the twanging country guitar bridge builds into the synth climax all over that pulsing electro beat that's pure majesty. Quintessential New Order 'indie meets dance' moment.

seriously... All Day Long and Dream Attack are a few of my favorite new order tracks, fucking CLASSICS

So I've been listening to this album for the past couple of weeks and I definitely think it's New Order's best produced live albums. The drums sound really strong (really don't know why Steve's drums sounded so flat on NOMC15), Barney actually sounds very good, and you can actually make out Tom's bass very well.

There's a couple of things that gripe me with this album.

1. New Order is a band with now 3 guitarists - sometimes playing at the same time. I'm pretty sure Barney, Phil, and Gillian are all playing guitar on Dream Attack so why the do guitars sound so weak?

2. I think someone said it earlier about how you can't tell that there's a synth orchestra behind them because this was just an audio release. Maybe it would have been more effective if we could see the orchestra for in a video format? Since you know this was pretty much a multi-talented musical art installation. Because we could all be hearing backing tracks.

I really think this was a great effort and this is the bands' best live album to date. Most of these songs show that New Order can still kick it and reinvent themselves. Maybe they should do the same with their current setlist.

I feel I need to chime back in in light of my negative comment above. I love this album, this is a fantastic show I wish I was at. I’ve bought the other recent live albums (bestival, there’s another one, yes?) and listened to those once or twice. This is on heavy rotation in the LostSiren household.Shellshock, Ultraviolence, subculture, disorder and behind closed doors are huge standouts for me. Best band on the planet.

I don't agree with -1's assessment of the album, but to be fair, 'Sub-culture' is a revelation and by far the best track on this album. Such a surprise to see it in the setlist and a dynamic and playful arrangement.

I wasn't really trying to be negative. I do think it's a wonderful live album. The synths and instrumentation sound very full and we'll mixed. I personally listen to a lot of bands that heavily use guitars and I understand New Order isn't that band, but still I know they can do it. Every single song on here was executed great, especially SubCulture, Shellshock, BLT, Vanishing, and the real bohemeth of the album, Decades.

Live at Bestival was a great live effort too, but something about NOMC15's production just felt off.

Also, after finally seeing New Order for the first time ever this year in Miami, they are a band that sound sonically great.

Created in collaboration with visual artist Liam Gillick, who has previously presented solo exhibitions at venues such as Tate Britain and MoMA in New York; and orchestrated by composer-arranger Joe Duddell, a fellow son of Manchester and a frequent collaborator with the band, the live show was performed by the band with a 12-strong synthesiser ensemble from the Royal Northern College of Music.

so a concert that is mostly based on multiple synths, with a song like sub-culture is out of place? or bad? really.

I'm seeing Hi-Res digital versions of the album on sale sporting 44kHz/24-bit but I know Music Complete was redeemable in 96kHz/24-bit via code with the vinyl.

Late follow-up but fuck me, that CD is, in the words of Sylvia Plath, fucking awesome. How cool to hear them FINALLY dig out gems like Ultraviolence, Times Change and Vanishing Point, and not a single Blue Bumday, True Faith Perfuckedo or Temptazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzion in sight. Even oldie BLT gets a reworking. With Music Complete and these gigs, they were finally ON again. Bet you never thought I'd say anything positive eh?
