What are the best New Order bootlegs, by year?
Here are mine.
1981 - New York 1982 - Blackpool 1983 - Tolworth 1984 - Barcelona/Berlin/Hull (for the EGG/586/Temptation medley)/BBC Rock Around the Clock (brilliant Sooner Than You Think) 1985 - Leuven/Slough 1986 - Oxford/Manchester 1987 - Glastonbury/Sydney 1989 - Cuyahoga Falls (my favourite of the 1989 'stash tapes')/Irvine Meadows (for the setlist variations) 1993 - Reading
I’ll have a better go at this when I have a moment, but two that spring to mind are Tolworth 1983 (as you mentioned) and Royal Festival Hall 1984 (I’ve Got A Cock Like The M1, Decades, interesting version of Face Up etc.).
Glasto 1981 is pretty great too IMHO (despite / because of Sumner’s alcohol consumption).
Oh, and that recent Peppermint Lounge video was frankly magnificent.
Oh and I agree that the Rock Around The Clock ‘84 performance is great and not just in a ‘car-crash’ kind of way.
I’m really hoping that this appearance makes it onto the DVDs of the forthcoming PC&L boxset.

Think someone said a while back the original BBC recording has been lost? Or cannot be found? Same thing i guess.Though what i mean is it may not be entirely lost but cannot be at present found?

Random faves of mine over the years
Rolling Stone, Milan 82
Kilkenny 83 because it was the first time I’d ever heard them live. Taped it off Radio 1 in December 83 and played it for months afterwards. Always loved Confusion, EGG and Temptation from this gig.
Vienna 84. Just always liked this FM recording. Cracking version of Temptation and early version of Sooner Than You Think.
85? Oooh... Slough maybe
Birmingham Tower Ballroom 86. One of their best ever gigs. I was there, well for the first half of the gig. Had to leave halfway through to catch train home, much to my eternal regret. The gig of course got mental later on with all the “Hey we might be a pop group but you’re a fuckin wanker!” stuff.
Sheffield Roxy 87. Was at this one. Great gig and a great boot.
88? Erm.... not sure!
89 Have always liked some of the USA summer 89 bootlegs. Great soundboard recordings. Can’t recall off the top of my head which though.

Bristol 81 is a good audience recording of a typical Movement set, before they started playing Temptation. Slough is pretty good, although we're a bit spoilt for choice with 1985 soundboards.
I haven't heard Vienna '84, Birmingham '86 or Sheffield '87. Will track 'em down. I love those gigs where Mr Sumner slags off the audience. We should have a sub-category for best "Barneyisms".

Milan for When You're With Me. Tolworth for the banter. London 6.12.85 cassette for starting with Atmosphere, the closest ever to a definitive TPK, and the full soundcheck to boot.

I’ve been re-listening to a tonne of New Order bootlegs recently.
My God, their 80s stuff is just immense.
Between those 5-8-6 / Everything’s Gone Green / Temptation segues, the ‘stream of consciousness’ lyrics and the Barneyisms, everything about the band was magnificent.
Even when they were bad (Canterbury Court ‘85, for instance), they were still bloody brilliant.
Studio and Live. Keyboards and Guitars. No other band ever comes anywhere near close.

Fucking Hell, someone agrees with me about something. When I went to university, I couldn't drag tonnes of vinyl up there so I made cassettes of my favourite take (no remixes unless hey had the full vocal and totally different music). The BBC Glastonbury recording has the synth too low in the mix, and it always annoyed me that on the official 12", Hooky's bass in the final coda is replaced by Bernard's sb-standard guitar playing. I dug out the second Glasgow DVD the other day and fuck me, what a racket. I know it was part of the funpunk ethic, but honestly...

Barneyism!
I moved house about 6 years ago and whittled my bootleg collection down from 250 to about 25 shows. I kept many of those listed above for their significance of early/different renditions of songs or for their superior sound quality (not necessarily soundboard only).
I also kept boots from shows I attended. I hadn't known of Barney's penchant for rude lyrics when I saw them in Berkeley in 1987 and he changed the line in The Perfect Kiss to "Tonight I should have stayed at home, playing with my big fat cock." Delightful!

Gosh, I haven't any bootlegs by New Order, but i have a 50 year old Danny Kirwan 's Fleetwood Mac bootleg lp and two by PF .0
I also haven't any guitar magazine articles about Bernard's guitar prowess , even though he has always been more interesting than many others that I won't name that get written about way too many times.
I have Ceremony by Galaxy 500, but not Luna . I like a lot of Luna . Dean Wareham's book is also good .
Freebass songs are getting better, although the singer is not so wonderful.
If New Order would do covers of some Moody Blues songs, Syd Barrett and early PF songs ,Panda Bear songs and other pretty songs I would not mind .
New Order should have the first created , privately owned anti grav airship ,so as to have easy , relaxing ,quiet , ,spacious, and comfortable touring conditions for their next 10 tours for their next 3 full length albums.

My current personal Favs:
1981 Glastonbury, love the In a Lonely Place and also Everything's Gone Green, I was there, they played just before Hawkwind.
1982 Paris, MAGIC GIG, chosen Time, Hurt and A lyric change in In a Lonely Place to 'A Light that Shines down from above, a light that is guided by love'
1983 Tower Ballroom, Brum, I was also there. Started with LWTUA, and a great version of Temptation, 'and Iv'e never seen such cunts quite like you before'
1984 RFH another I was lucky to be at, Great version of Face Up, Cock like the M1, and of course Decades.
1985 Hammersmith, great memories, meeting two people whom I have been friends with ever since.
1986 Tower Ballroom - missed this one - Great Boot
1987 Woolwich Coronet - Lovely theatre and was lucky to see em play 'Do the Ostrich'
1989 SECC, lost my shoe when they opened with Mr Disco - got it back after the gig.

1993 was pure formula. I used to have a cassette of Reading 89 and I was surprised how professional it was. The notoriously shoddy but fun mentality was over.
