Got the catalogue today.
As suspected, it's a nice item, full of some real cool memorabilia and, admittedly, some tat (some Get Ready, WFSTC etc. promo items, for instance).
The choice article for me is the Blue Monday anvil. Think Tony had about 8 made, each with their names individually cast onto them. This one says 'Peter'. Starting price is £1k but it’ll fetch a lot more, I’d think. I would LOVE this!
There’s also his Brit Award for the True Faith video, plus an Ivor Novello and the NME Godlike Genius award.
Apart from those, there are a LOT of very interesting tapes (demos, live sets etc.) that I'd love too. They start at around £100 for a set of them.
There's quite a few guitars for sale too. Some of which would be bloody nice to own (one of his Shergolds and a couple of his BB1200Ss, including his original one). There's also his HOT and HOT2 Eccleshall guitars, which look fab!
However, I'm not really sure who would want to own a bass guitar that was obviously gifted to Hooky and he never played (or, at least, not in any meaningful way). He's pretty much known for only ever using the BB1200S and Marathon, but there's quite a few 'other' makes (including some standard guitars). It would be weird to own a Hooky bass that isn't a Yamaha or Shergold.
Anyway, I won't be bidding. Too rich for my blood, sadly. :-( I also find auctions really annoying. I like to know that the price stated is the price I'm going to pay. It's frustrating when things escalate quickly.
But, still, I'd definitely recommend the catalogue (as I would the first auction's one). It's a lovely item and very nice to see all that memorabilia together in one place.

Only the BM Anvil was of real interest to me when skimming the web page linked above.

Sounds like what could be the previously rumoured Gazza attempt at the rap and then what is apparently Peter Beardsley, according to the Guardian's England v Denmark blog today .Was Beardsley pissed out of his head?

I wondered if these alternative "raps" would see the light of day as outtake excerpts on the 'Technique' definitive edition (they'd need to be clips of just the raps, not the entire song several times over).
Do you think Hooky selling off his tapes now will prevent this occurring - and from other, more significant, alternate takes and outtakes appearing on future boxed sets? Hope he doesn't have the only copies of such masters - or that the tapes have already been digitised ready for mastering and inclusion on the boxed sets.
Be a shame to flog off the only copies of stuff now and exclude them from future boxed sets in the process!

Loads and loads of interesting tapes. Basically from 1980 to 1990 there are assorted tapes of live recordings and demos and rehearsals. Each lot is roughly 7-17 tapes split on years. E.g. 17 live cassettes from 1981 December 1980 to Jan 1981. 7 cassettes from 1980 studio and demo. Some seem very interesting. All start at £100

'Thr B-Side' was basically the demo version. I read somewhere about who did the rap but forget - it wasn't the players. Perhaps Keith Allen?

So sounds like second generation copies - i.e. test pressings, CD-Rs and cassettes, as opposed to the actual master tapes. That's a relief.

Im pretty sure I remember John Barnes saying in the middle of NewOrderStory the decision on who did the rap came down to him, Paul Gascoigne, Des Walker and Peter Beardsley ( ![[:|]](/emoticons/ohwell.gif){kind=small}

To be fair, it was a very soft penalty. But these things even themselves out. Kane should’ve had a penalty earlier, IMO Their free kick that they scored from shouldn’t’ve stood etc.
Balance of play, we deserved the win, I feel (even if the penalty was soft). We created the best chances and were denied goals thanks to the brilliance of Schmeichel. Also, for much of the second half and ET, Denmark didn’t seem to want to win the game, maybe (realistically) believing that Schmikes would get them through a penalty shoot-out. England on the other hand, were pretty much camped in the Danish half for much of the latter parts of the game.
Roll on Sunday. I will say that I’m not very hopeful, regrettably. Italy look great and, sadly, a better side than us.
But you never know. It could happen. I’m just happy we’ve got a chance. A major final, eh? Who’d have thunk it? 😀

Yep, all that you said above, Perspexorange. England been well overdue some luck for a long long time..Mexico 86, Italia 90, Euro 96, South Africa 2010. Though there’s the argument that if they’d been good enough in all those tournaments they wouldn’t have needed luck. I guess you could say we were lucky to get the penalty against Argentina in the 2002 WC though.
I think we would have eventually got a second goal against Denmark even if Sterling hadn’t got the penalty , we were tiring them out towards the end of 90 minutes and in extra time. Just a shame we won with a dodgy penalty, well the rebound strike from Kane but you know what o mean- the original decision.And as for the own goal, well Sterling would have knocked it in if the Danish guy hadn’t.
I was just happy we got to the final and was concluding it would be an Italy victory but it would be such an occasion, a once in a lifetime thing . Never thought I’d see England in a final in my lifetime. But I’m actually starting to think England could have a chance. They’ve found a way to get through games in this tournament, they really dug deep against Denmark, and can wear teams down eventually. Southgate totally knows what he’s doing , a very clever guy. The team has momentum and so many of the players are really hitting their form. I’ve never been so confident of England’s defence as in this tournament. They’re gelling as a team, unlike the likes of Beckham and co in the 90s and 2000s.

This too! This is the best England squad I've seen at a tournament since the first one I saw back in 1982. We've had some pretty good teams (1986, 1990 and 1996 spring to mind), but never had the same wealth of players to pick from.
Even if we ultimately fail on Sunday (such is the England way), it's still a great time to be an England supporter. Semis in the World Cup and Nations League, plus the Final (and maybe beyond!) in the Euros. Exciting times!

Well , congratulations to Italy. They were simply the better team. In fact the much better team. Was disappointed with England and Southgate, thought he got it all wrong on Sunday night which was a massive shame after the team and he had done so brilliantly in the previous games. Had to smile at Chiellini yelling “ It’s coming to Rome!!” into the camera. A formidable character, without a doubt.
Left the pub as soon as Saka had his penalty saved. It really stung Sunday night. Thankfully I had a day off work on Monday and woke up puzzled , for a moment I had forgotten what had happened the night before . Then it hit me - oh yeah England lost in their first final since 1966. Still, my spirits soon recovered after a great breakfast and a few beers in the pub Monday afternoon with my brother and a mate as we went through the post mortem dissection. Strangely, this defeat didn’t hurt nearly as much as any of the semi final defeats of tournaments gone by. I guess I was just happy to have seen England in a final for the first time in my life, a thing I never thought would happen. Gonna take a long while though to pick up and think about the World Cup next year, of which of course England still have to qualify. Without doubt England have made a lot of progress under Southgate but really think we could have done a lot more against Italy on Sunday night.
As for the thugs and horrific scenes on Sunday afternoon and early evening leading up to kick off with gangs trying to break into Wembley without tickets and the utter carnage they wrought around Wembley Way and London....moronic, thick shit, fucktards that don’t give a fuck about terrorising genuine fans and their young kids. The examples you posted are (presumably) issues that occur in most countries in the developed world.
Also, maybe it's just me, but I probably wouldn't compare the possible 'escalation of violence following lockdown' to the very real dangers faced by many people who are living in a literal war zone, dodging bullets, bombs and landmines every day.
I get the point you are illustrating, but my point is there are far worse places we could be living.

Hooky's done little blurbs for most of these items. It really looks like a retirement acution, he's even getting rid of records by other people. Albums by Iggy, Bowie, Throbbing Gristle, Talking Heads. 7"s by Kraftwerk, Blondie, Stranglers, Malcolm McLaren... Lots of NO records of course.- including acetates, test pressings and metal stamper plates.
Some of the equipment is surprisng. Not only lots of bass's/guitars (can he play a normal guitar?), but cabinets/racks full of equiment and his "The End" setup. There's a New Order Apple Computer. Hooky: When Steve Morris gave me these after the split I said, "What am I supposed to do with this lot?" he said, "This is what happens in a divorce." In fact there's more than one computer and back up hard drives too (for playing live presumably?)
New Order studio tape reels! With comments from Hooky like "1987 was a good year, just knocking ‘Technique’ into shape." I wonder if "the others" have had a look at this lot...
And for another tape reel, the comment: "Found hidden behind a false wall in the Doves rehearsal room in our old Cheetham Hill rehearsal room and kindly gifted to me by them. Our first gig and the backing tape made to replace Ian Curtis. I had never been so frightened, since the first gig as ‘Warsaw’, supporting the Buzzcocks. There is a photo of the Beach Club at Oozits in the photograph collection. Funny how we went from being the ‘No-Names’ to the ‘Fighting over The Name’. Martin Hannett JD reels too!
Hooky's comments on the BIg Day Out Package (he covers this in his book, but sightly different here): We won the Bowling Competition hooray! I say we... meaning me and the road crew. Ken West and Viv Lees gave us a wonderful time here at the so called ‘Big Day Off’. We nearly didn’t make it... Steve decided three weeks away, it was just too much. I was devastated... what a thing to miss out on... I said to Barney, "What a shame it would have been great." He said, “It still will be. I’ll get the guy who did Electronic to do it." Wow! I thought... this bastard will be getting rid of me next! Steve relented thankfully, which was great because I’ve never heard a drummer on Electronic.

I'm not quite sure they've quite got the reasons right about why Hooky left, but...meh, whatever.

I assure you if I'm able to purchase that lot I'll be sharing with whoever's interested...you're not the only one that's been looking for the Republic demos. Although the tape says keyboard only...no vox. Might not be that great in the end...
I can only presume the Republic demos will be a copy of the 4 tracks mentioned in the past that were circulating as Factory demos.
Will be interesting to know what turns up on these!

That being said, I can't see myself putting in a bid. I think they'll probably go for a lot more than I would be able to pay and I hate being disappointed in things like this.
The Republic demos would be interesting. I always got the impression it started as classic New Order with Regret, Everyone Everywhere and Special, but then Bernard and Steve took over. He is a fucking deluded little Fucking fucker though, innee.

Pascal Gabriel is credited with "Pre-Production" on Regret and Young Offender (which I think would have been a better single choice than either Ruined in a Day or Spooky), so presumably those two were the only ones started before Hague was brought in.
I think Everyone Everywhere is actually one of the worst tracks, by the way. Plodding, cloying and lumpy.
Nothing like Liar, then. It's a theory I had cos in 92 Hooky told MM the next album would showcase a harder sound to the band and he namechecked EE. Regret, Special and EE are the closest to the blueprint and the only ones they played live (except the mandatory singles) and the ones Stephen mentioned to Select as 'meaning the most to me'. Young Offender is a frustrating track. It has all the elements of a strong NO track, but just doesn't come off somehow.
There’s a handful of fairly decent tracks on Republic. Young Offender and World, for instance.
But Regret and Special are where the real magic is. Wonderful tracks and amongst the band’s very best.

Just watching it makes me feel a little sad. I've said it before, but I'm not sure why he wants to part with some of this stuff.
I know he's probably discussed this with his family at length, but I know if he was my dad, I'd be wanting some of that stuff to stay in the family. For me, for my kids, and their kids. He made history. I guess nothing will ever change that, but it would be nice to have some tangible reminder of Mr Hook's immense legacy.
Just keep the BB1200S and the Blue Monday anvil, Hooky! (Or better still, donate them to me and I'll look after them on semi-permanent loan. ;-) )
I would definitely keep the original Yamaha bass, not sure why he's selling it. There's a lot of tat though, awards and such like.
Also, he never met U2 when they were 15. His book is littered with these inconsistencies which makes me question the authenticity of what he says/sells.
Some of the JD auction were re-purchased items from Ebay such as the green melodicas which he's still flogging, and the 'Atmosphere chimes' which Jeremy Vine bought for £7000 only for Steve to reveal it was a tambourine he used.
Nice Gucci loafers though. Salford Rules!

To double the £332,700 total cash made, each of the 53 withdrawn items would've had to sell for £6,277 each.
I doubt most of those items would've gone for much more than £750 a piece. To put it in perspective, even the True Faith Brit Award only made £6,000 and only six items in the auction exceeded that. Even a conservative average of £1,000 per item would've only netted £53k.
I'm not nit-picking here, but just pointing out that, financially, he probably wouldn't have gained that much more if he had sold them.
It probably hurt his pride more than his wallet, having to withdraw those items at the 11th hour.
That being said, I'm sure he thought that selling those items might have provoked the reaction it got from the band. So, it probably didn't come as any big shock.
Does anyone know who buys this stuff? I can almost understand buying musical instruments but £16,000 for an anvil paperweight, phew. Just seen the melodicas for £3000+ each which you can get on Ebay for £30. Maybe it was Jeremy Vine adding to his collection.
Is it just a few exceedingly rich super fans or has anyone here bought anything? The only things that might have tempted me were the tapes but still a bit risky.

I strongly suspect that a number of items went to the super-rich. I can think of one such fan who would almost certainly have bid on a number of the 'choice' items.

Yep. They were always going to be a risk regarding contents. I'm not sure even Hooky knew what was categorically on each tape. For instance, I can't see him sitting through each disc / tape saying "Yep - that's definitely New York 1986 - I can tell by the way Barney belched his way through 'In A Lonely Place'". To be fair, Hooky did qualify some of the auctions as 'buyer beware' or similar.
This is partly the reason why I don't think each of these Lots would've raked in big money. It's one thing to pay £6,000 on something which is quite obviously a Chris Eccleshall custom bass. It's another thing entirely to commit the same sort of lolly on some fairly crudely labelled tapes, with only a hint at the contents.
I know the winner of Lot 403, which was withdrawn at first, until verified these were recordings of non-New Order/Joy Division gigs in Hook's possession. With fees all totaled he paid £512.

I would add that there were clothing items that went for silly money. 2020's Uniqlo x Saville T-shirts for example. I think they're just listed as "Joy Division Clothing" in -1's list on the previous page here (lot 252). Six T-shirts sold for £400. These were in the packet unworn by Hooky. Probably sent to him as freebies last year. He could have even bought them off ebay a month ago... At full price they were about £12 each. At sale price (when I got the 'Special' one) they were about £6. Why pay £400 for them when you could have paid somewhere between £36 and £72 for the lot from Uniqlo last year? Madness!
And the 28% on top of everything too.
I'd mulled over the atari hard drive. Sold my st years ago but know folk who are still into all of that who could have extracted anything interesting off of it. A mute point though as it got pulled.

Is it just a few exceedingly rich super fans or has anyone here bought anything?
I ended up grabbing a piece of music kit. Don’t consider myself rich per se, just in a position where I can indulge on occasion. Yes it cost a lot and even more with fees and shipping. But it'll be a nice piece of history to own. I don’t consider it an investment.
When you’re talking about the historic grail items – Eccleshall and Yamaha basses, the anvil, etc – these are often going outside the NO collecting fraternity. You’re often competing with famous musicians, high end music collectors, museum buyers, etc.

I’d put these in the curio category only, but that’s just me. I can’t imagine there’d have been much interest at all.
I got the distinct impression that this was included as a bit of fun and a dig at the band. Not something that would make a whole heap of cash Most of the stuff contained within would be incredibly dull and of very little interest to most and it’s not like you can really put those boxes on display.
If a guitar that wrote most of the band’s hits only reached £12k, I doubt a box of boring legal documents would exceed that.

Inclined to agree, I think he was shit-stirring with the legal papers. But the red thing went for £15k not £12k. (Red one was studio, black one was live?) Also I reckon that "played the basslines" does not = "wrote most of the bands hits". If you look at Hooky's side projects, I think it's unlikely he was the chief songwriter in JD/NO, regardless of how he phrases things like "when i wrote LWTUA"...

Legal firms have the clout to demand what they want when they really really want. They aren't gonna be dicking about one some has-been's auction and digging out a grand just on the off chance.

The situation with the tapes last time was a bit weird, if I remember rightly. Some of them were withdrawn, whilst others not.
Certainly some of the Hannett reels were withdrawn (Lots 145-150, 155-157) and some weren't (Lots 153-154). Similarly, some tapes and CDs were withdrawn (Lots 204-205), whilst some weren't (Lots 210-229, for instance).
I can't remember when these were withdrawn, but certainly the Ian/Annick letters and guitar books were 11th hour. Possibly the tapes too.
But, yeah, it does feel a little anti-climatic for 53/409 lots in the current auction to be withdrawn the evening before the event takes place.
To be honest, I don't think it was totally surprising that these were withdrawn.
Maybe, Hook was chancing it - to see if some would've made it past 'the cut'. Maybe he was trolling the band, knowing full well they'd protest.
The only thing that did surprise me was the late withdrawal, but there may be a legitimate reason for this. I don't know how these things work. Maybe a protest was put in early, but the auction house only withdrew this at the last possible moment. Perhaps negaotiations were happening up until the last moment, but they fell through. Or maybe the band just wanted to disrupt things as best they could by leaving it to the last minute before they registered their complaint.
Anyway, I'm tempted to contact Omega and ask for a partial rebate on my catalogue. ![[;)]](/emoticons/wink.gif){kind=small}
Joking aside, I just hope that all of the 'studio' stuff on the tapes has already been 'backed up' (or other copies exist) and the best of it makes it out onto the box-sets. Similarly, with any live soundboards. I suspect that most of the live stuff on the tapes, CDs etc. are bootleg audios (rather than from the mixing desks) and are mostly nothing different from tapes circulating amongst fans.
But who knows, eh?

i saved an image of all the items. i cant remember if i did for the descriptions too.
i'm pretty sure there are plenty of unreleased tracks, versions on the tapes.
we know there was more power corruption and lies material out there too,
i dont have any information on the prior items auction.

Something curious: Lots 56, 75, 196, 197, 198, 199, 202, 207, 222 & 223 are all classed as 'unsold'. However, unlike the other unsold items (113, 267 & 296) which presumably didn't meet their 'reserve' price, there doesn't appear to have been any bids against them.
I find it hard to believe that these items wouldn't have been bid on (especially Lots 196-199).
It seems more likely that at least some of these were 'withdrawn' rather than 'unsold', like the Hannett tapes.
