So who is/was the driving force of New Order?

After hearing Get Ready, i would have to say Gillian. But then again if Steven wasn't really a part of Get Ready if would probably used his name instead.

I think there is something you only get when the four of them work together. What was missing from Get Ready was some of the "Pop" feeling that other New Order songs have had. Maybe that's what she brings to the table. She may well the the best pure musician in the band. I think it would be hard to argue that technically she is a much better guitar player than Barney is. This is in no way saying that Barney can't play guitar.

I think they all bring something, and we hear that in their solo projects. I don't know how many Electronic songs i thought would so much better with some Hooky Bass, or how great Monaco/Revenge would be with Barney singing, or what The Other Two would sound like with some more grit.

That's just what i think.

I've been listening to a lot of the side projects, and what I notice that stands out is the drumming (or lack of quality of it)...the day that Steve steps out of the picture will be the end of New Order for me

I think you'd have to be in the band to really know the answer. From where I'm sitting it looks like they all need to be into it at the same time and working hard for them to do their best stuff, but that gets harder to arrange as they get older.

all of them...i've always thought it was a collaborative effort...when it wasn't, NO fell apart.

my wild guess... it is a very collaborative effort... but i think that i lot of the guitar stuff, both melodic guitar and the melodic bass played like a guitar stuff comes from Hooky. Steve plays a strong part in the drums (obviously) and rhythm section, and the sequencing. Bernard is the lyrics and the melodic synths, and the guitar bursts. Steve and Hooky are very important to the band (both New Order and especially Joy Division), and they were downplayed in Republic.

Gillian is ??? ??? its hard to tell. maybe those chime synths in Technique and World in Motion, they are sort of the feminine touch... its hard to tell, maybe a lot, maybe very little...

i think a lot of the humour and the more aggressive stuff (which still manages to be melodic or humourful anyway) come from Hooky.

Greater than the sum of their parts...which are all pretty mediocre taken in isolation. Let's face it Barney sings like a diseased corncrake and plays guitar like a spastic...Hooky slightly better, not-bad bassist but there should definitely be a law against his (ahem) singing. Steven...well alright he CAN play drums but is disturbingly nerdile. Gillian ...who she? Put em together though....GESTALT
