Big moment for me to announce my new single ‘Riptide’ featuring original vocals from non other than Bernard Sumner, the lead vocalist from one of my favourite bands New Order and member of Joy Division. It’s a huge pleasure to have Bernard on a record with me; having listened to him on so much incredible music throughout my life. It’s a slice of euphoria mixed with the melancholy of Bernard’s vocal and it’s out next week 10.03.23

Linus! Good to see you here! Been a while? Great spot. Mella Dee is a north of England bloke I think. And judging by that tweet, he's a Technique fan. I'm familiar with Mella Dee from Pete Tong's show - I think he did a little 3 track cameo on Tong's show in 2021. And this track got played by Tong quite a bit too.

It's always nice to hear Bernard singing something new. The synth track is fairly rudimentary but sounds decent enough. And Bernard has lost none of his lyrical flair: "Geopolitics, they're killing for kicks..."

Very poopy but I like it (admittedly without Bernard’s vocal I probably wouldn’t have paid much attention) Bernard’s vocal on it sounds excellent, music as already said sounds a very standard dance track.

So it seems Bernard wrote or co-wrote the track. Shouldn't he be keeping new songs for New Order? [skeptic]

It does feel like it's from the same Bernard song writing era as Unlearn This Hatred, Superheated and Be A Rebel (but a better song than the latter two, IMHO). I would like a gritty, darker remix of this. Maybe we'll get one (?).

So the lyrics are:

We're worlds apart like a crashing car like a dying star across a great divide

its like a riptide (x3)

wild scenes on the wide screen power dynamics on a crazy crazy planet geopoilitics; they're killing for kicks what can we learn as the screw turns?

its like a riptide (x3)

doo doo doo doo (x4)

riptide, riptide... its like a riptide...

Amazon and iTunes had this version but I was able to get a WAV of the long version from Beatport.

Is it worth getting the extended mix the long version from Beatport, I already downloaded the regular one from apple

You know the answer to that, Linus. The Extended version is far superior and builds up nicely. It's actually unlikely that I'll bother listening to the single mix much.

I also purchased the extended version..... is the edit available somewhere?

I'm a streamer these days. In the US on Apple Music, there's a longer, 5:30 long, mix on a dance compliation, Kompakt DJ Mix by Nicky Elisabeth

The Beatport version discuseed above is longer than 5:30. The version on Judge Jules' show is kinda weird because it's long but it doesn't have some of the vocals later on in the track. Maybe Judge Jules did his own edit?

I notice NO tweeted about the track today.

I wonder what happened to this collabration, in May 16 2021, Mauri Syrjala posted this picture of him and Bernard in the studio, I wonder what it was for, I asked Mauri through Instagram and facebook but never responded.

The Chemical Brothers story is one he's told before. In fact I referred to it in my 11th question in the Ask New Order thread (my post #3) and it got an answer further down the thread in post #19. It's about Out Of Control. The first time I heard Bernard telling that story was on this DVD (track 35) from 2003. So he's been telling that story for 20 years now. I don't think he's referring to a new collab. It's also not an entirely true story; there are still some Bernard guitar parts on Out Of Control, as we know. Having said that, the Chems have just completed a new album - due out in the autumn, and in a recent interview they said there would be some "returning heroes" on the collaboration front, but they haven't said who.

As for Arcade Fire: The remix has been around for a year as per this Rolling Stone Magazine article. Rumour has it, it was about to be released in 2022 when it got put on hold. Possibly because of the bad publicity around Arcade Fire's lead singer, Win Butler as detailed in this Pitchfork acticle. Weirdly it wasn't his wife (and fellow bandmate) Regine who was complaining, but other people with whom he had extramarital relationships.

Anyway, here's the original track that Bernard has remixed. Maybe we'll get to hear his remix one day.
