Here is the explanation of why the songs above were kept for this survey.

First of all, I took all the tracks that got the most votes for each previous poll we've had for each album. When a song came second but very close to the first, I kept it for this list as well.

I also listed what was voted as the best New Order b-side ever, "Lonesome Tonight".

Since we didn't have a "What's your favorite track on Substance" poll, I also kept the common favorite tracks of everyone, meaning Temptation, Blue Monday, Thieves Like Us, Perfect Kiss and True Faith. Oh yeah, I also kept Ceremony because of Allen :happytongue: .

That makes 19 tracks.

The last one, the 20th, is New Order's only #1 single ever, World in Motion.

SO, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN -- AMONG THE 20 TRACKS LISTED ABOVE, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE NEW ORDER TRACK ?

This poll will be opened until next sunday December 1st where, for NewOrderOnline's 2nd anniversary, we will be revealing what are the TOP 5 favorite songs of NewOrderOnline's members.

The same day, I will be opening the FINAL POLL, named THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE, in which we will all be determining what is the overall favorite New Order song.

Thanks, and vote in great number!

Two more things:

1- Once the votes are read, the decision is final and you'll have to leave the tribal council immediatly.

Woops! Wrong line! (I get my jokes from Taboo #7 !!!)

1- Once we know the results, they will be transmitted "officially" to Jonathan Scott who, if he feels like to, could transmit them to the "official authorities".

2- Here is the TOP 5 favorite songs from the "Best songs from x album" polls, in terms of number of votes each of them got:

  1. REGRET with 37 votes;
  2. LEAVE ME ALONE with 27 votes;
  3. CRYSTAL with 25 votes;
  4. DREAMS NEVER END with 24 votes;
  5. YOUR SILENT FACE with 23 votes.

 great thread

My vote has to go to Blue Monday. It was the first track i heard and to this day the bit at the end where the wobbly sequencer sound comes back in after being absent since the intro still sends shivers down my spine.

Fucking hell that's a great list of songs. Looking down the list and evaluating every one is boggling...New Order are big stars in a dark sky. Where is the "all of the above" option?

ok, I selected Dream Attack. Has/Will always give me a warm fuzzy feeling. Like being in the most comfortable place on earth. Perfect Kiss is the utimate techno/pop symphony...Blue Monday does still sound amazing...they're all very, very good. This is what seperates New Order from their contemporaries (Depeche, PSB's, Cure). None of those groups have a cataloge of real gems like those listed.

I too agree, where is the "all of the above" option? :D This is reaaaally hard to do but I'm going with "True Faith". I never grow tired of listening to it. Never.

I realize it's a very very tough poll -- I thought I would die when I picked my choice. The song that really got me into New Order was True Faith, but then Bizarre Love Triangle was the one that I always loved... but Blue Monday was the one with the most impact on me... AND YET, to my very own surprise, I picked Temptation!

I also realize that I did not put Touched By The Hand of God and Here to Stay, but I could only put 20 choices, and somehow, I doubt any of these would be in the ultimate Top 5.

Didn't I already do that poll?

Oh no, it was best album track...

I'm getting increasingly worried that my votes in these polls always seem to be for the earlier stuff. Yes, I still like the new songs, but Ceremony, Procession, Temptation, Age Of Consent, Dreams Never End, etc. encapsulate New Order for me. Oh.... yeah... just realised... I'm OLD!!!

it´s a strange feeling. I ended up voting the perfect kiss even though BLT was always my favorite, and vanishing point touched my heart so deeply the first time I listened it, and temptation is unique, and ceremony is the first song that comes to my mind when I´m playing my guitar, and blue monday is... blue monday. but somehow the perfect kiss has it all (obviously we´re talking about the full version, aren´t we?): great rhythm, great melody, great hooky bass, great keyboards effects, superb instrumental ending, it´s got power, it´s also soft and delicate and it can make you dream.... that´s why I ended up voting the perfect kiss. period.

the "hooh's" in Lonesome Tonight.... the drawn-out bass doodling on Your Silent Face... the arching synth in All Day Long...

sexual? spiritual?

Temptation. YSF and TPK would be close second.

I had to vote for Bizarre Love Triangle. It's that song that turned me on to New Order. There's nothing better than the feeling I get when I listen to any of the many versions I hve of that song.

The Perfect Kiss. The clue's in the title ;)

Nah... Temptation that is.. it has always won EVERY competition among New Order fans, and it's the band's favorite...

Is there a gig in the last 20 years they didn't play it? :D

(Probably, but there isn't many!)

After several minutes of cold sweat, little boy in the candy shop sindrom I plumped for KW1. What a great song and what a great band!

Quite a few, surprisingly. Don't think they've ever gone more than two gigs without playing it though. If I've got some time on my hands later I'll check !

"LONESOME TONIGHT" is my choice! i never get tired of this song, the guitar work is so brilliant here and the keyboard-phrase working together with Hooky's bassline is intoxicating! my second choice would've been "Primitive Notion" followed closely by "1963" which isn't listed here unfortunately...

AOC, just. As Wilson said in the Palatine booklet, "that wonderful, wonderful guitar" Hooky's bass, Barney's crazy falsetto, the synth parts. Cracker.

Er, didn't we do this a year ago?

Temptation won it, with TPK second and Ceremony third.

I've got a good memory, me.

Yeah, but that was just a regular poll. This is the ULTIMATE poll!!

Its somewhat hard to vote when your favourite two songs arent listed....

Still thats the problem with best of polls and best of compilations *ahem* ;)

yeah...and we didn't have those nifty little things up top to click on back then!!!!

as for me...I'm still finding myself very enamored with Thieves Like Us at this time...

but who knows how much longer that will last...

Those 20 songs would sure make a great setlist.

Lets hope there's some 're-programming' going on down Macclesfield way as we speak...

I went for Temptation but it was a close call between that and TPK.

The Perfect Kiss is the one. For me, its the tune that best represents New Order, and has also one of the most beautiful videos I´ve ever seen.

Good to see Temptation with several votes. That would be my second choise... of course, the original version, not the 1987 one.

Just a question: why not Subculture on the list? Don´t you guys think it deserves?

Best regards, Alexandre (first-time at the english forum...)

That's the beauty of my system.. since it's all database oriented, I can tell you how many times they played temptation and when... in a snap.

But not when a CD is burning on my machine :D

Ah that you see, I prefer the 87 version a LOT...!

Maybe because it's the first version I heard, but it's just good.. and they enhanced it through the years (they played it so many times, no wonder) the current live version is very very good... and it's not the last fu****g time they'll play it ;)

Well, it's not really a New Order song you know

I'm glad you didn't differentiate between the two main versions of Temptation, as there will always be some who prefer the original, and there will always be sane people like me who know that the 1987 is the single greatest New Order song EVER, and its the one I've played to relatives, friends, strangers, and its got them ALL hooked on NO! So there!!

Voted for Ceremony; I know, I know, you're right Nick, but it blew me away to hear it for the first time, especially live. Of course, almost all of the other choices are just a bit behind Ceremony, but I will always happily play this anytime anywhere. Temptation is #2, with TPK #3.

I must vote for "Perfect Kiss" here. That extended jam towards the end is just fucking incredible.

In the end, it's one of the first songs I heard by them, and it is probably the song that pulled me in. This one and Ceremony... it was toss off... I mean up

how is a girl ever to decide between these choices??I automatically go for Thieves Like Us as I could probably listen to it until the end of time and still get a shiver...it just encapsulates everything great about the band, nice long intro, lyrics that just fall short of silliness and somehow manage to be heartbreaking and happy. If I had to pick another it would be Dream Attack...love is not a strong enough word.

It was a close call between that, TPK and Dream Attack though...

Thank U folks for the warm greetings!!

Coming back to "Temptation", what I really love in its original version is that its recording is so raw and cold... and totally danceable!! A fucking-punk-dance tune. The 1987 version is a lot more pop... but also an amazing one.

Just to say something I've posted on the Portuguese Forum some weeks ago: why there´s no Temptation on "International"?? We all see how the fans and the band are receptive to this song... instead, they put 60MPH to increase some "Get Ready" sellings... sad.

Pete Hook's base through all the different versions of Temptation has always been perfect. The range of music I listen to centers around this song. I think it is perfect.

I did not vote for Perfect Kiss but I have to say that the video for that song is one of my favorite.

too damn difficult this. It's either Ceremony, Temptation, Regret or Your Silent Face.

Through a complex scientific selection process involving a coin and my right thumb, the winner is.........................Your Silent Face.

Can't argue with science!

Shit. Damn. A LOT of my favorite songs! :(

I'm stuck between Ceremony and Temptation...I was gonna vote for Ceremony, but it is technically a Joy Division single as well! But I really like Temptation, it has evolved over many years...but the original version is STILL so brilliant!

Awww, crikey...

TEMPTATION. :)

Difficult list to choose from, but I'd have to choose TEMPTATION. I remember purchasing 'The Best of' album when I was 14 & I loved it, but the main reason why I have continued to follow New Order & believe them to be the greatest band of all time was when I heard TEMPTAION on a Q album compilation back in 1998. It's a superb song that never seemed to make it on the 'Best of' Album or the recent 'International Greatest Hits'album. There are so many New Order tracks that are superb, but TEMPTATION definetly stands out for me. SPREAD THE WORD OF NEW ORDER!

Actually its interesting as im sure that had songs like Primitive Notion,WIM, LV been omitted and songs such as All the Way, Sooner Than You Think, Paradise, Special, FaceUp, Sunrise and Round&Round been included then they would have almost certainly picked up more votes...

Just goes to show what a fickle lot we are

regret. but if 1963 or Everything's Gone Green had been on the list, it could have as easily been one of those two.

for me it has to be 5-8-6. the peel session version has the edge. smashin' toon.

Despite Dream Attack and Perfect Kiss being right up there - both make me feel like I'm floating somewhere about 10 feet off the ground - I had to give it to Temptation.

I'll never forget leaving G-Mex at the end of the Festival Of The Tenth Summer, in 1986, with hoardes of people humming "oo-oo-oo-oo-oooo, oo-oo-oo-oo-oooo, oo-oo-oo-oo-oooo, oo-oo-oo-oo-oooo" in unison. It was the song I played on my way home in the car after being made redundant in 1982, and it's as uplifting now as it was then. Sheer bloody brilliance.

Oh, and "1963" is not only New Order's best B-Side, it's THE best B-side ever!

Oh but of course, poll after poll tells us: Bohemian Rhapsody is the greatest song of all time.. ha ha ha ha ha ha ha haa hha ha haha h ha aa g hhaha ah ha........

I voted for True Faith, as the quintessential New Order song. However, I think World should have been one of the choices. Call me crazy, but I like Republic a lot.

just to clarify, i voted for Dream Attack, my "favorite" new order song...NOT what i believe is their "best" or "most influential" moment but my personal favorite....the original question was what is your favorite song, not what was New Orders best...am i the only one who made this distinction?

nope, Brian, you are not the only one voting with his heart on this one...I by no means think Thieves Like Us is their best song...but at the present time, it is the one that tugs at my heart in the most peculiar manner...

ask me what my favorite song is next week, when I'm in a different mood, and who knows what I would choose???

It's hard when you have to pick one. Where's State of the nation, where's Subculture? Probably a lot of work but can't you prepare an open poll? Let everybody pick his/hers three favorite songs and see what hapens. Just a matter of counting.

Anyway, while Crystal provided my first orgasm in I guess five years I'll go for The Perfect Kiss. The 12inch is far over the top but it's the song I can play on an on an on.

Yes, the Pendleton fault. Pendleton, an area of Salford which has a geological faultline running through it and prone to earthquakes. However, according to the headmaster of Barney and Hookys school it also signified a psychological defect common to the citizens of Salford in that they suffered from a debilitating sense of low esteem. We were never good enough. We couldnt compete. You can see how long it takes to throw off such an attitude but perhaps we have all moved on now.

I'm still thinkin on this..... to me its two different things: best song and favorite song. their best song is what i would want to play for someone to represent what NO is all about. it would also have the perfect combination of recording quality, production, writing (both lyrically and musically), etc my FAV song would not necessarily have all or any of the above qualities, but just the one i would have to have on a desert island somewhere. jurys still out on this one.... :rolling:

Still mulling this one over. I've eliminated twelve (I think) from contention. At the moment it's between Dreams Never End, Age Of Consent, The Perfect Kiss and True Faith.

But the likes of Ceremony, Temptation, Thieves and Dream Attack are lurking waiting to counter attack...

The problem is, I'd feel so dirty voting for one at the expense of the others. The songs listed above are all pretty much perfect (occasionally dodgy vocals or lyrics apart) - how can one vote against perfection?

I'll probably end up abstaining.

good call, I voted for Thieves because I love it...but I by no means think that its the best, it sums up lots of things that I love about the band but if you want to get all technically perfect about things... then I think True Faith is probably the "best"...but lets not start that poll just yet...;-)

and how come no votes for World in Motion (tee hee hee) I almost feel like voting for it just to be nice...what were they thinking? thats what happens when you let the drummer write the song, they're at the back for a reason...

Aaaaaargh! Excuse the sexism, but this is like asking Hugh Hefner to name his favourite Playmate after all those years lolling round in his jim-jams lapping up the attention (i.e bloody difficult). However, coming from the home of the last Olympic Games, I would award the medals thus:

GOLD- TRUE FAITH (surely a gift from the gods; perfect in every sense) SILVER- TEMPTATION (the Substance version thanks; just a staggeringly amazing tune that would've won gold in any other lifetime, but for TF) BRONZE- THE PERFECT KISS (once again, the Substance version; any other abbreviated version is a criminal injustice to this towering aural journey that takes control of your body, mind and soul for seven minutes or so). Honourable mentions to Age of Consent, Crystal, Regret, Thieves Like Us, Ceremony, Dream Attack & Your Silent Face. Thankyou for the chance to participate and enjoy the jockeying for positions between these gems (although where was Mr.Disco?) DAVID ROWLANDS Sydney, Australia

It would have been very interesting to see what the best song of all time would have been between ALL NEW ORDER SONGS, but that would be a bit over-the-top.

There are a lot of less known album tracks that are just as good as a lot of the singles (Im not gonna say which as I would like to avoid any kind of controversy on this topic) which would have performed well in this poll, but all's not lost as the list does contain most of NEW ORDER's greatest songs, although every song they have done is great!

Mark, this IS all songs - there was a vote for the best singles, and separate votes for the best tracks, broken down by each album.

We each have our favourites, but it's safe to say these choices are basically the creme de la creme (although how TTON sneaked it over Sunrise, is beyond me! :skeptic: )

As someone has said before, it would be a lot of fun if we could do a poll to choose the worst NO song ever.

Perhaps we could do the same mechanism, by choosing the "worst" track on each album, and then picking up one between them!!

I'm sure there are people that will say this is heresy, but I don't think so. As a matter of fact, we are the most eligible people to do us, since no one knows NO better than the people on this forum. Not even them!

Nico,

Trust me, just wait till you've seen Ceremony live, and try and witness it on my shores as opposed to yours, just to feel the surge and mayhem from the crowd. Breathtaking stuff. The ultimate three-minute workout.

Run and ADL are not worthy comparisons. Both are reasonably slow to mid-paced numbers whilst Ceremony is strictly for the 'ardcore. All good songs, but Ceremony only has one market - down the front!

Anyways, Ceremony has taken over from True Faith for the time being, so I'm villified.

I feel you may not be 100% correct there. Joy Division started writing it, New Order finished it and recorded it.

Love Vigilantes OR Temptation ? Don't you know ?

It's a New Order song. It's synonymous with New Order, not Joy Division. It was their first single and has always been one of the highlights of their live set.

It's hard to choose just one. But if I have to decide one to vote, then I'd go for True Faith. coz it's never felt out of time. Crystal, Regret, Blue Monday are also my personal favourites.

World in Motion was number 1! ... and the band members wore really nice clothes in the video... and no votes at all! it was the pinnacle of New Order's career!

...well, i'm as sure as hell not going to vote for it either.

all these years i thought Barney had a sense of humour, or at least a couple of layers... now i'm starting to suspect that he was just high.
