I was going to do a poll for this thread but am at a loss to recall all the songs they have opened live gigs with!
I can recall about half a dozen without sifting through the tours&concerts section but im sure there are many many more... so if anyone fancies taking on this challenge be my guest!! :)

They've only opened with Ruined, Regret, Atmosphere, Crystal and Love Vig in the past two decades.
Pick any one from about fifty in the eighties, mind.
Of the five mentioned I'd go for Love Vigilantes. Pure bedlam within five seconds of the song starting. With Regret it maybe twenty seconds!! I hate slow openers - all the tension and build-up and then it's, wow, a slow one. Whoever decided they should open with Atmosphere then Slow Jam than an unreleased Crystal at Liverpool last year should be shot. Killed the crowd off totally.
i only know that the most unsuitable song to open a set is "Atmosphere" (they did it in Cologne and Liverpool i guess).
Bloody hell, there's been a few over the years !
Surprisingly good choices were : Sooner Than You Think (several 86 dates) Shellshock (US 86)
Obvious choices were : Sunrise (85 a few times) Perfect Kiss (quite a lot !) Your Silent Face (often 83/85) Elegia (a few times 85/86) Confusion (loads 83/86) Touched (every soddin' gig just about 87-89)
But the best one, IMHO : Let's Go (instrumental). Pacey, energetic, relatively unknown but also relatively rare enough to make people feel that its inclusion in their night was a special gesture.
I think the Brum gig in 1983 takes some beating: LWTUA (first post JD) followed by AOC. Multiple orgasms come to mind.

Or how about the EGG and Temptation medley circa 1984? At the Heaven gig they followed it by Ceremony.
I agree with Donnie here, REGRET is the best opener, specially when it comes after the "We're New Order..." bit. However, I'll always remember Move Festival when they started with Love Vigilantes and Jarvo shouted "they've changed the set!".

october 85...the venue...sheffield uni...my bro was at the uni at the time..so digs were arranged...knowing i wasnt travelling back home i had a drink or three...and they kicked the gig off with.. TEMPTATION AGE OF CONSENT DREAMS NEVER END CEREMONY
the place was packed to the rafters...what an amazing start to a gig...it DOESNT get any better than that...

Apparently, since they opened with YSF at Oakland in 85, that put the majority of the audience off, for I distinctly remember a subdued audience for the majority of the gig. Checking on the Waterrat site, the notes on that gig indicated that they were spat upon and generally did not have a good time. Why they returned to encore with Sister Ray is something I've never understood, but since I'd travelled a long way to see them at the time (driving 13 straight hours, but I was very enthusiastic), I've felt appreciation for them for putting up with the crowd that night.
Perfect Kiss at Tiffany's in Leeds in '84 (or was it '85?)
Place was packed to the rafters, and as that bassline thumped out across the dancefloor, I remember turning to my mate and uttering the words "fuckin' ell - it's funky!"

That may be the case, but I must agree with the major!
LOVE VIGILANTES is & was a great opening song whether it was recent or not.
