This is a bootleg named "More Than Despair". The first 8 tracks were recorded at Polytechnic of Central London, London (doh!), December 6th 1985. The last one was recorded at Fulcram Centre, Slough, December 7th 1985. Nice recording from the Polytechnic with a few clicks and pops from the vinyl though.

the live version of Dreams Never End has to be one of the most hilarious things I've ever heard in my life, the major contributing factor being Hookys vocals, what passion. Its brilliant when he comes in far two early for the second verse and mumbles SHIT (i think) Then the final primal scream of SOOOOUULLLL towards the end of the song. Sheer class
Rocket Mick sent me this show with Sunrise Instrumental and Elegia demo tacked on the end. Pure Class. Anyway, here's what's written about this show at the Gigography.

I believe the performance was in benefit of a coal miners' strike that was happening at the time. Ken Weingold on the "faclist" mailing list states:
"Someone I know was nice enough to put the New Order bootleg I ripped from vinyl up on his high speed connection. Download it and enjoy. It's from 12/6/85, except for the last song, which is from the next day or two." (Last song is She's Lost Control from the Fulcrum in Slough the following night)
Intro to Atmosphere:
PH: "C'mon, a bit of respect!"
BS: "More guitar through the monitors, Ed."
It's remarkable that the drum pattern in this version of Atmosphere resembles the latter-day performances. I guess it's supposed to be a simulacrum of Hannett's echoplex that the drums got run to. The keyboards come in more than halfway through, overpowering the rest of the music. The "set down with due care" line is almost spoken.
Dreams Never End
Bit of a false start. This is the track Hooky gets a beer can thrown at him.

"Someone must have disliked the fact that Hooky was singing lead on Dreams Never End. If you here the bootleg he doesn't come in at the right time halfway through. That's because he had just been struck on the head by an empty beer can thrown from deep in the audience. Hooky mumbled something back but I didn't catch it. Needless to say, there wasn't any encore that night. However, Atmosphere was brilliant with the audience dancing like crazy on the synth bits!" Thanks again to Winston Winand!
After some careful listening, I've gleaned on what Hooky was saying.
PH: "You cunts...hate me...fucking shit..."
By the way, the guitar interplay is simply amazing.
Procession
PH: "One two"
Synth wash, bass rumble. Barney whoops after first verse. Volume on vocals for intro of second version was low in the mix. No Gillian backing vox.
BS: "Thanks very much, thanks very much."
Promiment cabinet rumble leads us to the performance of Sunrise.
BS: "Thank you punters, very much."
Lonesome Tonight
BS: "You all move back a bit, else we'll be doing another suffocation benefit next week. I'm sure you don't want us to gig London again."

This version features lyrics slightly different than the recorded version, but is otherwise pretty well developed.
Lots of bass feedback, fans cry out for their favorites, "Let's Go" can be heard as one of the choices.
5-8-6:
BS: "Drum machine, Ed, you got to hit it, to play sound through it."
There's technical difficulties with this one, the sequencer is messed up, but the synths finally come in near the end. This song also features a quite promiment keyboard solo, hey.
BS: "What did you need that monitor for? I can see you now."
Perfect Kiss:
Barney whips out one of his all time classics:
BS: "Can you move back a bit please, someone's getting crushed in the front. I don't give a fuck really, but it sounds good if I say it."
The source tape has distortion about 35-40 seconds into this song. There's loud feedback during part of the second verse. At the end of it, Barney comes out with a bit of self-congralatory bravado:
BS: "Ahead of our fucking time, ahead of our time. Bronski Beat ripped that song off, and I could name a few others as well."
Face Up and Age of Consent aren't featured on the performance I have, pity.

Isn't this the one with truly horrendous renditions of "Weirdo" and "Atmosphere"? If so, I had it on tape around '86, '87 but lost it somehow...

(I felt pig sick after a similar incident at Woolwich when I left before the encore and got the bootleg a month later).

Girlfriend at the time had her leg in plaster - can't remember what for, think it was ligament damage. And it was a right schlep back to Woolwich train station from the Coronet, and then back into town, then round to Liverpool Street and back home. Basically dictated to by train timetables. Bird wouldn't have fancied missing our train and having to sleep in the station overnight! Had that attitude of not caring what I missed at the time - didn't even know if they were gonna encore - cos knew I was at Brixton 48hrs later. Gutted when I got the boot and it had Atmosphere AND Do The Ostrich - thought it was a wind-up at the time.
Remember this gig for Barney's voluminous beige cords he wore on the night - like something out of the 1920's, pulled right up to his armpits. I went out and bought a pair like it at Ken Market a week later! Sad twat.

He came on with the most amazing jumper at the Coronet which appeared to be made of various patches of colour - reds, yellows, etc. But this soon got binned after Ceremony. Think he was a tad hot after that one! Underneath he had a white polo shirt but he was going through his 'vogue boxing' dancing at the time so I remember he kept pulling the (already short) sleeves right up to the shoulder bone, then letting 'em drop again. Strange boy.
Ask me what I did yesterday though, Steve, and I haven't got a clue.

hello...been off line for a tad....your explanation is accepted mr.j.....i used to be pretty obsessed with what the barnster wore as well...seeing as he dresses pretty woefully at times it is/was pretty concerning..
I can safely say that I have never taken an interest in what Barney wore ! Copying his haircut for 10 years was enough........ always wanted a "Kill 'Em All" t-shirt like Hooky's though.
Muffy sent me a copy of the show a while back, I definitely think it's one of NO's finest performances, if just for simple attitude. We both wondered if the the line in Procession at PCL "try to make see the world without you" as was recorded back in'81 or if Barney had changed it to "try to make you see the world without Ian". We agreed that it sure sounded like he said "Ian" but considering how Barney can be indecipherable at times, who knows?

...the fuck ups, between-song banter and the setlist in general is what I can only dream about experiencing when (or IF) I see them in concert someday.
I love the drum machine at the beginning of "586", makes it sound better in a way. And how Gillian comes in a few bars too soon w/ that synth line at the start.
