Substance Casette

I read somewhere that Anthony Wilson said that the Substance cassette was a better format than the CD version because it had better mixes of the songs. My question is why is there such a difference? Does it have to do with the length of casettes v. lps/cds, was it a marketing ploy or what? I bought a used copy of the cassette last night for 4 bucks and I've noticed some small differences in songs I usually skip over in the CD version (ie most of the songs on Side 2) to make me feel justified in buying the tape version... but anyway, can anyone shed some light on the subject matter?

I came across the cassette version awhile back as well. I think there's a newer version of it issued from London or Warner Records, and then there's the original issued from Factory.

My tape is from Factory, and it's in a big cardboard sleeve with a blue and a red tape. I noticed all of the songs are edited in the same way as the CD version, like Perfect Kiss, Sub-Culture, Shellshock, ect.

The track listing is a little different though, amd it's mislabed on the sleeve. The first tape has Murder after The Perfect Kiss, and the second tape has Cries and Whispers (Mesh?), Dub-Vulture, Shellcock, and Bizarre Dub Triangle added to it.

... hey!!! I think I can get a copy of Sibstance in cassette! Could anyone explain the real differences? The Cassette version I've seen is a double one, but only has on it the Substance cd 1 (3 songs on each side) Is there a version which includes "Murder" and all the cd 2??

There are also 2 types of cassette tape for Substance release on cassette.

I still have an old copy of this lying around at home. I think the main differences were caused by the old 74 minute CD running time limitation when it was originally released. Hence (slightly) edited versions of some of the A sides and not all B sides present on the CDs (as well as perhaps contributing to the fact that certain songs were re-recorded as shorter duration versions.) Of course, CD running times have been increased somewhat since then, so there is no excuse, aside from sheer bone idleness, for London not to reissue a proper version.

I got the big double pack with cardboard sleeve years ago and practically wore it out. Its a shame it hasn't been re-issued in a proper CD format but then again i only picked up my edited CD copy for £7.99.
