JD setlists - a couple of changes

Been looking at the Tours and Concerts pages - here's a couple of amendments to the JD listings.

The 4/9/78 and 30/6/79 Band on the Wall shows have the same tracklisting - the songs listed only relate to the 79 show (most of them weren't written at the time of the first gig!)

The Erics 11/8/79 show is listed incorrectly. After Transmission there was a version of Section 25's "Dirty Disco", rather than Sister Ray and "Gimme Your Heart". I think it was played as a jam because the bass had blown momentarily, rather than being scheduled in the set.

The Mountford Hall 2/10/79 show - I think Dead Souls was played before Wilderness, though as I don't have the tape I can't confirm this.

I'll look at the New Order ones later.

I have a tape of this but I don't know the Section 25 song, but after the bass amp starts having problems they do play the usual Sister Ray chords for a minute and go into a little song with no bass where Ian sounds like he is singing 'Gimme Some Lovin', which is how my tape was labeled. Does this resemble 'Dirty Disco' ?

Yes, the "gimme some, gimme your heart" song is Dirty Disco by Section 25. The start chords were the same as Sister Ray in Barney's interpretation of it (it's actually bass synth on the record).

Mountford Hall 2/10/79 was Liverpool. There is no copy circulating, so if you have got it, e-mail me and we can sort out a very generous trade.

Sean - it wasn't played at Malvern. The "Malvern" bootleg has a couple of tracks from Erics tagged on the end.

oh right, i didn't know, i don't have any bootlegs you see, just lots of mp3s ive put onto cd. you cant trust these p2p file sharing things for accurate information can you?

There's been several bootleg CDs and albums released called "Warsaw" - you'll find all the info you need here. Without seeing the sleeve of yours, I can't tell which one you have.

OK, unfortunately I don't have that Liverpool gig on tape, I thought perhaps it was one of the shows that has made the rounds that I just didn't recognize. I just have the tapes that were 'available' in the late 80s and early 90s. Have any others come to light since then ? I remember there were a couple of tapes recorded by Alan Hempsall that were sort of around then but I never could find them, including a different Russell Club gig.

I wish I could get my hands on that Russell Club II tape ! It's the one on 11 April 1980 that was apparently quite a gig. The only thing that has surfaced since 1980 is the Nashville first gig, of which the first four tracks survive. Everything else has been knocking around on the bootleg circuit since it was recorded. I know there's a Plan K 16/10/79 out there somewhere, tracing it is a different matter ! I also know that someone has the Rainbow Theatre 1980 tape, which has the debut of Decades on it. GAwd knows where it is though !

I've got a Plan K tape, that should be the one unless they played there more than once, doubtful since it was on the Euro tour. IIRC the sound quality is not particularly good, I will dig it up and give it a fresh listen. The only stuff I have that was scarce would be 'Atmosphere' from the Nashville Ballroom gig, the first track from the show from an audience tape, that track is missing on most tapes of that show, and the soundcheck from the Birmingham U concert. Let me know if you need any of that stuff. I know I wanted a copy of the audience tape of the last concert so I could hear 'Ceremony' with the complete beginning but I don't recall if I ever found it.

I'l wager you've got the Plan K 1980 tape that starts with Dead Souls and has Sister Ray and The Eternal at the end. Pretty fierce Warsaw in it ! The one I want is 16/10/79, which featured the debut of 24 Hours amongst others. Atmosphere was on the second Nashville gig - I've got an audience recording of it at the start of my mixer tape. I've got the full Ceremony somewhere, not much cop though to be honest, as the sound was shite. When I find it you're more than welcome to a copy :)

I would love a copy, don't know what I have to trade you though, it sounds like you have your JD/NO bases covered, which doesn't surprise me. Are there any other bands you are looking for live tapes of ? I have some stuff by the VU, early Pere Ubu (all pre 1st album), Can, This Heat, Captain Beefheart, etc. I used to have some other Factory related bands, I'll see what I can find, maybe some Section 25 stuff.

Is it confirmed they played Decades at the Rainbow Theatre ? I'd heard it as a rumour but didn't know it was fact. It'd be great to hear it played by JD in tune !

On a related theme, does anyone know what the setlist was for NO's debut at the Beach Club in July 1980 ? Presumably the 4 Western Works songs would have been played as they were recorded in July also. Strange that In A Lonely Place wasn't on the demo. It would be interesting to start tracing the chronlogy of when the songs were written.

wasn't the soundcheck for the High Hall gig, 2-5-80, their last gig, recorded as well?

and decades COULD be in tune!...is this available?

Crappest recording out, as well, unfortunately. So bad I wiped over it rather than contaminate ten minutes of tape.

Decades from that soundcheck is not as badly out of tune as it was later that night. Old oscillators are very sensitive to temperature and humidity changes. When they did the soundcheck, the synth had probably just been unpacked from its' case. On the other hand it is also possible that the AC power in the building was jumping around in voltage. It would make sense that it would get a lot worse later that night when the hall was full of people and everything that would have been used for the show, like lights and food/drink stuff, would have been on in addition to the PA, as a lot more current would have been drawn. You can actually hear the drift get worse as the song goes on in the evening version. It's not all that terrible at first, it just sounds like a way too wide vibrato type of thing, but then when he (Barney) gets to the staccato part near the end before the last 'where have they been...' section it is unbearable. Well, I think so, but some people like it.
