New Order songs are great - there's no denying this. However, at times, the underlying meaning of each song can be interpreted differently. I find that it's interesting to hear peoples different interpretations of a song meaning (that's just me I guess). Please choose a song and explain what it means to you.

Liar. To me, it is Barney's reaction to Tony Wilson and the demise of Factory. Bit obvious really.
- In one of my music courses, we were asked to bring a piece of music to class and to explain why we liked it and all. I brought 1963 (Best Of version), because I found the music beautiful even if the story behind the lyrics was (then) cryptic. The whole jilted-lover-gets-shot storyline always seemed to fascinate me.
True Faith. We're all getting old and some people aren't nice, but feck it, these are nice drugs and anyway the sun still comes up in the morning.
Ummmm - that kinda takes away the magic, doesn't it?
Too Late - is this song inspired by the Herbert Schmalz painting of the same name does anyone know?

I thought "The Morning Sun" was a metaphor for Ecstasy, with the whole song being about blowing money and time on the drug, and getting relient on it... "that my life would depend on the morning sun". Barney's best lyrics are 'True Faith': sound like a nag about a spendthrifty partner ("took my time and you took my money") when it's about the price of drugs (both monetary and emotionally... "now I feel you've left me standing, in a world that's so demanding...")

Nice analogy, but Barney would've been jumping the gun a little somewhat if that had been the case. Ecstasy was only just appearing around that time, and wouldn't be a full-blown lifestyle till the following summer.

It had everything to do with the song ! I think it's been around in US club circles since the late 70s.
Its been around since the 50's (you should watch more discovery channel documentarys!!)
First broke in US in that 'Confusion' type scene, but wasnt till the Smileyface Acid house fad swept the uk circa '88 that it found a foothold in this country. big warehouse raves of the late 80's and early 90's are synomonous with xtc and euro-house explosion.

Ecstasy wasn't even called ecstasy till the mid 80's. It was known as Adam or Empathy. And was likely thought of in pretty much the same way as we now view the likes of ketamine - a minority drug that people were very reticent to try. The band might've tried it, but there was nothing mainstream about it.
Andrew's original comment about the morning sun can surely only relate to the European take on rave culture - hoardes of people still up at sunset, dancing. Something which didn't really come about till 87 at the earliest.. Or, more likely, if there's a drug reference then Barney's talking about cocaine - and the problem of being up all night. Or even speed. But if was talking about ecstasy, then he certainly had major foresight..
Blondie on E in 1978? Every schoolboy's fantasy, surely?
