Jack - The Mag (FAC 413)

The latest issue of this A5-sized magazine not only features New Order going through "their own stash of rare personal memorabilia", but has also been issued it's own FAC catalogue number - FAC413.

Anyway, topics covered include their first bass guitar (bought for 35 quid from Mazels' in Piccadilly) and effects pedal, Tour Programme (of which 40,000 were delivered 3 nights before the end of a 30 night tour - they apparently still have 37,000 left!), Storyboard for Blue Monday 88 Promo Video, Pernod (!), Ashtray, Ian Curtis In classic Joy Division Photo (in snow near Hanging Gate, right next to the barbers), and the infamous Melodica (originally Ian's who used it on "In A Lonely Place", and then subsequently given to Barney).

Classic anecdotes, never before heard stories, and well worth the dosh.

Next month (out apparently end of January) features "The rise and fall of the Hacienda, wrecking Peter Gabriel's studio, playing Baywatch and owning tanks" - can't wait!

Where can you get this????

Actually Ian having the melodica makes sense as he was a big reggae fan and that instrument features heavily in the works of some early 70's reggae artists e.g. Horace Andy.

Nah, it's out already - I didn't even know about the mag's existence until I saw it in King's Cross WH Smiths on Wednesday evening!

You *might* be able to grab a copy via their website - http://www.jackthemag.com/ , but I'm not sure... (It's the January 2003 issue that's pictured on their website with the Hac-type diaganols.)

BTW, apparently the reason why Ian had the melodica was that he was an Augustus Pablo fan (whoever he is - I really must check him out at some point).

This is a good anecdote, btw, on Ceremony & In A Lonely Place:

" Barney: In the two weeks before he died we wrote "In A Lonely Place" and "Ceremony" and recorded them onto a shitty tape.

Hooky: No, we did record them in Graveyard Studios - with that guy with ginger hair - because you can hear them on the Joy Division box set. (!)

Barney: So, we actually have got proper recordings of them? This is news to me. After he died we thought we've got a good starting point with these two songs and we started writing again, we got the rehearsal tapes out and got a little graphic equaliser and tried to pull the vocal out and we couldn't quite get the lyrics. So we wrote down what we thought Ian's lyrics were on both these songs. But now I've just found out that stupid old us went in the studio and recorded them. Why did we do that?

Hooky: Because we forgot.

Barney: How could we forget about going in the studio? Are you sure?

Hooky: I found out when I was going through my tapes for the JD box set. I had one tape with nothing written on it and I put it on and it had Ian singing "In A Lonely Place". That version is 12 minutes long, the vocals are really low as it's just a rough mix. Martin Hannet had the eight track master.

Barney: After Ian died, Martin had a big falling out with Factory because he wanted to buy a Fairlight and Fac wanted to buy a nightclub and they were roughly the same price, or so we were led to believe. Martin went into a sulk saying, "you'll lose loads".

Hooky: The fool, but he was right. "

Augustus Pablo was a 60's/70's reggae artist who used the melodica extensively. It's really nice stuff, think 'Turn The Heater On' with a lighter touch for the general vibe. Barney's melodica playing actually owes a lot to those artists.

Augustus Pablo also did a fantastic dub track called King Tubby Meets the Rockers Uptown - and yes, he did feature melodicas on a lot of his stuff
