Music For Pleasure's best song

"Junk" for me. Reminds me a bit of "Blue Monday"...

'What do you want from me?' - had not heard anything from New Order for a while and was in Virgin (before it lost the plot) when I first heard it. Thought it was New Order. The bass line must be one of Mr Hook's best.

I guess WDYWFM will get this & I have a soft spot for Shine, but Junk gets my vote. Cheers.

Went with Shine. The music and production are so similar to the classic New Order sound that I get a funny feeling in my pants. Happy Jack and WDYWFM? are excellent as well. Junk, Under the Stars and Sedona are very good. Sweet Lips is good. Buzz Gum and Tender are marginal. The only duds for me are Blue and Billy Bones. After playing Billy Bones at the Fillmore in San Francisco, Pottsy apologized to Ian!

Something about the CD always annoyed me. The break between Billy Bones and Happy Jack is not in the right spot. When you select HJ, the last snippet of BB chirps out of the speakers at you. I have both the UK and US releases and they both suffer from the same error. The US release of Electronic's Raise the Pressure has the same problem between If You've Got Love and Out of My League. Does it occur on the UK CD as well?

WDYWFM? - the best Monaco song. This album is really good, especially if compared to the next...

i thought they called it "junk" because they were just intentionally riping off the current trance sound of the time for a one-off take on the scene... its not really very original, but it was not suppossed to be i think

or maybe Hooky was saying that the use of the roland 303 sounds were "junk". i thought it was all in fun.

I love Shine, and this whole album! I think I like it better than any of the electronic albums, despite how much I really like them.

Apart from everyone elses obvious nomination of "WDYWFM?" I really do dig "Shine" cos it's so melodic, so I plumped for that instead, but "Happy Jack" is not far behind either. Both of these should have been the second and third singles instead of that cheesy-sounding "Sweet Lips" (which reminds me of Take That for some reason). I know Shine WAS a single after that one but it didn't do that well really cos the record buying public had probably lost interest in Monaco by then.

Still, it's amazing that the first single and Music For Pleasure album were both top 10 in the UK! Shows what some decent plugging on the radio CAN do to a NO-related release.

Oddly enough, I was listening to MFP in the new Civic EX tonite and struggled to elaborate to the girlfriend which track was my favorite -- it's a complete four way toss up between Under the Stars, Shine, Junk, and Tender. I mean WDYWFM is fantastic and all, and I love this album completely, but man those other tracks.... By the way, I find it interesting that what many might call a throwaway album of lite-NO is the only album released on 7/1/97 ( I recall buying all three on the same day and it was a Tuesday) that I still listen to (the others being ... Echo & the Bunnymen "Evergreen" and Radiohead "OK Computer")

Shine is a complete rip of some old song my mum has... the name escapes me..

Thanks for adding the "Under the Stars" track to the poll. It falls in place perfectly on the album. The American version release of MFP didn't come out until many months after the UK version. Suffer you forgotten children.

I've voted SHINE...my all-time fav...I could listen to that song over and over again...and those bass riffs solo....ohhhhh.....love the instrumental version too....

But frankly, I think MUSIC FOR PLEASURE beats all ELECTRONIC albums hands down....yeah, pity about the follow - up...

wdywfm is a great catchy song, but i choose junk. Its one of those song that caught me at the right time.

"Shine" has an incredibly catchy bass melody, which contrasts with the completely unoriginal and kinda generic sounding vocals, lyrics and guitar... i like it but i have no respect for it.

and i still think they called "junk" "junk" for a reason....

Shine - narrowly beating WDYWFM, which actually got to number 11 in the UK charts

Great album! One of the best side project albums. Junk is my favorite on this one. Sedona comes in a close second.

WDYWFM - It's the only one I 've heard and it sounds good on Trigger Happy TV

Although Monaco's definitely NOT playing in the same league as Electronic, this album is...,well, ok. No grudges against the bass parts of Hooky, they absolutely sound great! My favorite has to be 'What do you want from me?' The lead vocals of that other lad are a far trad behind those of Bernie. Not a chance to come close, I'm sorry. No, this album doesn't move me that much. Have to put some Electronic stuff on now, so this is it! :)
