Strange album. It's easy to pick it apart but yet I still love it. What? You want me to pick it apart? Okay, here I go.
I've Got a Feeling is my favourite. It's probably Monaco's fav. also because Hooky reused the bass riff in A Life Apart and Pottsy starts off Kashmere with IGAF's "Ooh, ooh, oohs". That said, those are my other two picks from the album! Berts Theme is Pottsy pretending he's in Saint Etienne...but then I like Saint Etienne. Ballroom is practically a rewrite of The Cure's Catch. Yep, I like Catch by the Cure. Do you see where I'm going here? See-Saw is Sweet Lips part two, a disco stomper that really doesn't suit Hooky's vocal "style". (You remember Sweet Lips. It's the one that rehashes the bass riff from Vicious Circle.) Of course I still forked over the money for the double 12". Black Rain's the one that (musically) sounds like What Do You Want From Me? part two, or should that be Guilty Partner part three? Yes indeed, I like all three parts! It's a Boy and End of the World could re-ignite the debate over the (over)use of backing vocalists but are both solid songs. Finally, Marine really doesn't fit in with the rest of the album and takes far too long to get going, but when it does kick in it is sublime.
In summary, while New Order tunes often have a certain something that I love but can't describe, I love Monaco despite the things I can see all too clearly.
