Which version is better and why? Personally I like the Substance Version much better--but I did hear that version first as a kid--but still I think it is a bit better than the original.

I prefer the original version than the remix, because the original sounds more simple.

The "Brotherhood"-version, 'cos Hooky's bass is missing on the Substance-version and it's just a remix...

ORIGINAL...although i do like the ARTWORK for the 12 incher.

The original was the LAST version I heard of bacon lettuce and tomato.....and I like it the best. The intro does it for me. :D

I prefer the single version based on the Substance mix. But it is not listed... :'(

I don't like the original version. The Shep Pettibone one is good, but it's a club song. My fave one is the 1994 version.

The video version has a mix of the Substance and Brotherhood version. Isn't that the 7" version?

The only version I've heard for years was the one off of Substance, but once I heard my favorite modern(!)rock station play the radio edit of the Brotherhood version, I was "Hooked"

Not a big fan of the remix, probably due to Hooky's diminished part. I voted for the original, which is obviously a very fine song...but I probably prefer the '94 version.

The Pettibone single version has Hooky's bass all over.

also noticed in the discography section of this site which is EXCELLENT in case you folks don't check it out...a different Shep Pettibone mix is listed on the Acetate of BLT...Shep's alternate version or something like that...anyone have this alternate mix?

Original version, by a mile. Without the soaring bass, it loses all it's power.

the substance version just squeezes past brotherhood for me. they're both fantastic and BLT is my favourite NO song, i guess i prefer the substance version solely because it was the first one i heard and it's the one i always come back to in the end. hard choice, tho.

Yup, I think the '94 version gives you the best of both worlds: ie - pop disco heaven and Hooky's dumb-genius bass.

the remix lacks some of the bizarre unique great beauty of the original BLT. the original always makes me feel all good and fuzzy inside.

Actually I heard the Brotherhood version recently again and I must say it is pretty darned good. I was partial to the Substance version because its the first time ever heard NO (back in 89 as a kid) and I loved that song--although at the time I didn't know the name of it :).

But anyway the original is just as good as the Substance version IMO. And with a few more listens it might be a bit better ;).

Frente's version was a minor hit when released in 1994. Devine and Statton actually beat them to the stripped-down-acoustic-version-of-Bizarre-Love-Triangle-with-female-vocals punch by releasing theirs in 1990. Devine and Statton featured Allison Statton of Young Marble Giants and are not to be confused with Stanton-Miranda (of Thick Pigeon, which also included Stephen Morris and Gilberts' Gillian & Kim) who covered Love Will Tear Us Apart (produced by Arthur Baker) on the A Means to an End tribute to Joy Division.

Wow, this poll is shocking. I would have figured the Substance version would be winning for sure. That version is actually just about the only remix, non-original version I like.

probably have to go with you on this one, for the same reason. although i voted for the substance version, i always wished it had more of hooky's bass in it, which made the brotherhood version so enjoyable. as you say, the '94 mix takes the best of both versions and makes one big, happy BLT!

Personally i like 're-mixes' as long as they dont stray to far off the path.But in this case the Original is best. But an additional mix by Arthur Baker would'nt go amiss.

the original on brotherhoody is one of the few tracks i enjoy on the disc, so it gets my vote

I would go for the Substance one of the Radio edit, the one on Brotherhood wasn't quite there for me, but still damn good.

Bought Brotherhood when it was released. BLT was the track which immediately stood out for me, and which I played again, and again, and again ......... When the 12" came out, I was pleased with the re-work, but IMHO it's not a patch on the original which has an anthemic quality to it.

The remix always feels so ripped apart. It really is just a shell of the original version. Fills the dance floors though.

exactly!!! that bass line is just beautiful...it makes the song...it sounds so soothing and melancholic..... and the way it works with that happy, synthesized and energetic beat...that's fucking magic, baby.

I always prefer original versions, remixes are just remixes.

The Brotherhood version gets everything that's good about BLT together in one hard-hitting, compact 4 minute package. Pure aural bliss.

The Substance version is a letdown. It could have been an extension of the ecstasy that is the Brotherhood version, but instead it's too slow for dancing and too fast to mellow out to.

From someone who was there at Hemel Pavilion hearing that original Brotherhood-style intro (and no lyrics !), there is only one winner.

For me the shameless vocoderizing of the 12 inch version (portrayed on Subtance as the "definitive" version of Bacon Lettuce & Tomato) was an outrage, trying to capture the best bits of Blue Monday/Ecstasy.

I voted for the Substance version, it's "clubby-er" and it reminds me of going out to the clubs. I think I've just heard this version so many times because I was a cocktail waitress at a club one summer and this song was played every night.... But nothing beats the original.

I definitely prefer the Substance Version, although my favorite is the version on the Married to the Mob soundtrack, that version seems to carry the best of both worlds, except for that kick butt, vocoder deal at the end.

I love both versions, but the Brotherhood version is more compressed so there's more layering to it. Gotta love the layering of NO's songs; apart from Hooky's bass, it's what I feel sets them apart from a lot of other electronic bands of the time. Has a lot to do with the super short plinky-plinky notes in a lot of their songs probably. Case in point: nothing beats the Substance mix of The Perfect Kiss.

Brotherhood version--the original, untampered, unperturbed Bizarre Love Triangle. The "humane" beauty in the song is something which the Substance mix cannot capture. How can you go without the synth lines on the chorus? The Substance mix is a bit like the original of Round & Round--the chorus really suffers without a melodic synth presence.

The 1986 7 inch is virtually the same as the video version, but has an intro simlilar to the 'Brotherhood' version. Don't forget, there's also a different 7 inch edit that came out in Canada - not all that different, mind you , just slightly different edits throughout.

I've never heard the 'Extended Edit'/'Alternate Version' either, and no of no one that has it - could it just me a myth?

There isn't a radio edit of the 'Brotherhood' version - just an edited Shep Pettibone remix, with Hooky's bass put back on top.

I like the original best, closely followed by Stephen Hague's 'Married To The Mob' mix (the one that was remastered for 'The Best Of...' but had the nice, "do, do, do" ad-lib after the first chorus which isn't on the 94 mix).
