Substance Cassette

I have Substance one and a half times on tape.

On one version the tapes are black and the other clear plastic

Can anyone tell me ss this just a manafacturing re-run or a possible import? (there is no visible signs of either of them being an import however)

mine (in the white linen box) are black with black labels.

when it was released in the tradtional two box cassette form (ie not the linen box) i believe the labels were then red & blue, mimicking the conch shell & peony.

not sure i remember seeing any clear cassettes for it when first released

I have the red and blue labels, the red one went in the blue box and vica versa.

I had a clear casette! (I *THINK* I got rid of it after I bought "Substance" on CD.)

The first time I walked into Wax Trax! Records store in Chicago in high school, I remember seeing an import version of "Substance" that had two (2) casette tapes. I remembered that some of the names were slightly different, too...like "Shellcock" instead of "Shellshock". But alas, the only version available that I could find locally in the US was a clear casette tape (with white print) and a clear case. The artwork was still the same (print with "New Order - Substance - 1987" on the front, with the red peony and blue conch shell inside the inlay card).

mine's clear and only has the one cassette. in fact, when i bought it, it was the first clear cassette i had ever seen and i was really impressed with the technology of the day. 'twasn't an import over on this side of the atlantic or anything if i recall correctly.

That's the exact same one I have, the domestic version they sold at the time. The casette was clear, with white print (I, too had never seen any other casettes like it at the time). The side of the inlay card was neither red or blue, but black. The red peony and the blue rosebud/violet were both on separate pages in the inlay card (I think I mistakenly referred to it as a blue conch shell earlier, my apologies). On the inside part of the inlay card was general info about the tracks. No lyrics, of course, which just added to the mystique of New Order at the time I bought the casette tape. It was from Qwest Records (Quincy Jones' company), a subsidiary of Warner Bros.

I wish I'd bought that two-tape promo now!

Well mines identical to this - but the tapes are not black they are clear plastic!

Oh and the tape cases are black and not clear like in the picture!!!

afaik when it first came out the sides of the slip cover were red & blue as in the picture, but they later changed to black (not sure if that was before factory went pop)

The Black lbels with white writing versions of Substance were issued when Factory issued all of New Orders' then available albums, as well as other Factory artists including JD, ACR, Durutti Column in the late 1980's. All NO cassettes came in a white presentation box with black typeface.

the substance cassettes i had were sold seperately, #1 was the white substance 1987 and cassette 2 was called "substance sides" (side 3, side 4).

it was blue with orange/gold text. the cassette was black with blue sticker labels (like the cover).

i still have it, actually.

Ah Substance. The first New Order purchase I ever made. Red and blue heaven. Had been blissfully unaware of their existence for ten years.

i have to say that my substance cassette now sits with all of my other one million and one other cassettes in a crate, irritating the hell out of me because they only seek to remind me that no matter how much you keep up with technology, there will always be a newer technology just around the corner to come up and bite you in the butt just when you have spent shedloads of money building up a music collection, forcing you to start all over again in a new medium, as i did circa 1990....
