Bought "Republic"...

My first studio album from NO, and I decided to get Republic. I don't regret (oh so witty) it, but it's not that great an album. The first five tracks are great, but the next six are kind of forgettable....but I'm listening to it all the time so it might sink in.

Technique is next....

An essential part of the Republic experience is the many remixes: Regret, World, Spooky.

And where can I purchase these remixes, good sir?

Most of the remixes were issued on CD singles.

i just wish Hooky had bothered turning up for the sessions...

If you think of Republic as a Bernard Sumner solo album or an Other Two record with Bernard on vocals, it's pretty enjoyable...the lyrics are pretty decent on Republic...

hooky did show up but after a few songs they sent him packing

Republic is the first NO studio album I ever bought, then I followed it up with Movement (that's a contrast that can be wierd for new fans!). I always defend the album as a whole, but I agree that the first few songs are usually what I'm refering to when I do so. Anyways, it's not as good as David Hasselhoff's Looking For Freedom, but it'll do :p :D

I'm not very musical, but is there a bass guitar at all on World?

The worst place to start for sure, unless you wanted to start at the bottom and work your way up.

I dunno, something about 1993 appeals to me. Great year for my fav. bands like Depeche and U2, so I thought maybe for NO...apparantly not.

If I'm working my way from the bottom, what studio album comes next?

The first album I bought was Substance, then Republic, Technique and going down to Movement.

I don't have Closer or Unknown Pleasures.. just JD's Substance, Permanent and Heart & Soul..I do already own Substance. Ohhhh, um, next I'll get Retro and pray it has the extra CD. Then it's Technique, then Brotherhood, then Low-Life, and so on.

They are all on (the rest of) NewOrder...

Regret (Fire Island Mix) World (Perfecto Mix) Ruined in a Day (Reunited in a Day/K-Klass Remix)

Some remixes on that album are not worth it, but since you won't be able to find the CD Single unless being lucky... and it will be cheaper..

The Spooky remix on Rest Of is not one of the better ones. Actually, I see the CD singles for Regret, World, and Spooky from time to time either in stores or at on-line stores.

i play bass, and i ve just listened carefully and there may bee a little mixed low, but it could be synthetic bass, either way its not hooky signature bass

Probably Movement, then Get Ready, then Brotherhood, then Technique, then Low Life, then Power Corruption and Lies, then the 1981-1982 EP (the 81 EP is out of print though). Everything else should be relatively cheap. Once you get past Brotherhood, the list gets pretty hard to order. Of the last 5 albums - Brotherhood to 1981 EP - there would be people who thought each of the albums was their best. Me, I am a rabid 1981 EP, PC&L, Low Life fan.

The chorus is way too dance popy for me, kind of like Britney Spears working with Erasure. Sorry, I know it's harsh, but that's what came to mind.

My 74 year old mother plays Liar on her keyboards ! She'd been looking at my New Order songbooks that I left there when I went home for a weekend, and surprised me with three tracks - Liar, Young Offender and BLT.

The video's shit - two guys in it, one who looks like Spud off Trainspotting. Starts b&w with a cardboard box on this guy's head, goes colour towards the end. Supposedly some speed/acid-fuelled journey somewhere. Crap.

Sounds pretty bad. The other videos for Republic weren't wonderful either, although I believe some people like the World video.

The World video isn't bad, cute how they managed to get the band in cameos....works better with the Perfecto edit though

For what it's worth - Liar represents a time when NO were as lame as they have ever been. Republic sank from being a bad NO album to simply a good album compared with other artists, and that is just not on, given the quality of their work leading up to this release. Ironic, as I rank Regret in the top 5 NO songs of all time. Thank God that for GR, Barn rediscovered his guitar, Hooky his patented bass and put an end to the Erasure-like bilge that was the second half of Republic. As always, an opinion only.
