They appeared as opening band for Ultravox, but Duran Duran was available at the last minute so NO had to sit the bench. Ha, but that should get you churning.

Not a roadie no. As I have already stated my first gig was Brixton in 1983. The following February??? a few of us jumped on an arranged trip to see the band in Frankfurt. Many friends were made and from then on we all used to meet up at EVERY gig in the UK, even helping each other get there on many occasions.
The USA '89 tour came round completely by accident. I just happened to be in Miami on the day the band were playing their first mainland show at and I bumped into Barney as I was making my way into the venue in the afternoon. I eventually ended up following them all the way to Seattle (I missed the Vancouver show through being completely shagged!)
The tour was actually in two stages so as my girlfriend was studying in NY at the time I simply went and stayed with her for a month before returning to San Francisco for the start of the second stage.
It looks as though I have found Jon Scott, who I first bumped into at the first on mainland USA in Miami, 1989. We travelled together to the shows in Tampa, Gainsville, Atlanta and New Orleans. Boy, are there some stories to tell, even in such a short time frame!
The highlights of the tour? TOO MANY TO MENTION! But a few immediately spring to mind...
The club we all went to after the Miami show.
Being asked to sleep in a cupboard when Jon Scott and his mate were making friends with a couple of American girls in Miami.
Funniest had to be when I was having a drink with Barney at an aftershow party in Phoenix and people were actually asking for MY autograph, even though I told them I was only a fan.
Chatting with Peter Saville at the Universal Ampitheater show in LA.
Getting into bars and clubs, in respective cities, and getting free drinks all night, compliments of my laminated ACCESS ALL AREAS pass!
Seeing Barney kick off backstage in Philadelphia when someone took his photo. Class.
Seeing Gillian swatting bugs as she was trying to play keyboards in Kansas City.
Seeing New Order at Red Rocks in Denver.
Having free rides on rollercoasters whenever the band played venues in parks such as Astroworld (Houston) and Six Flags over Georgia (Atlanta).
The whole experienced kind of left me burned out as far as the band are concerned. Great band and great memories though.

PS 'Getting around'
On the first stage I managed to get hold of a Delta Airlines pass. Which cost around £250 (I don't think they do them any longer)
This ticket would allow me to travel ANYWHERE, and as often as I liked, in the continental USA for a month. To save money I would actually take a flight and sleep on a plane.
For example, if the band were playing somewhere like Los Angeles and the last show was in Phoenix I would fly to somewhere like JFK in NY. Have some food on the plane and get some sleep. By the time I reached NY it would be almost morning and I would simply get on another flight back to the west coast and help myself to some more food and sleep! A majority of the airports in the US have (or had) shower facilities so I would utilise these and make the odds trip to a local laundrette to get my clothes washed periodically.
The credit card did take a little bashing but it's amazing how much you can save when you really try.
On the second stage my girlfriend and I delivered a car for a company for AUTODRIVEAWAY, from San Francisco to Baltimore, allowing us to take in ALL the shows enroute, although we were a few days late!

did you have any probs picking tickets up for the usa gigs ??
did they play lots of diff size venues??? or was it mainly vast arenas without atmosphere...( not the song )..

Sid wrote a few of those stories up in a little fanzine called Paradise way, way back in the day!

We are indeed not worthy - we can only dream of 150 different shows, particularly as they nearly all will have had a different set every night, and around 120+ will have had Perfect Kiss played !!!

I never paid once for a ticket. Barney stuck me on the guest list for the first show then once the three of us hit Tampa Jon Scott had a work with Hooky (and despite this!) we were then on the list for the respective shows in Gainsville, Atlanta and New Orleans.
Indeed, the venues in the States were varied. You could say they fell into three different catagories. 1) The Ampertheater style (Philadelphia, Millwalkee and Columbus, for example) 3) Festival (Houston, Atlanta and San Diego) and the standard indoor venue (New Orleans, Portland and Seattle)
The last time I saw Jon was in our hotel room in New Orleans and he was about to drive all the way back to Miami.
For me, there was a few days before the show in Austin, TX so I just flew around the country for a few days helping myself to some sleep and food! I couldn't tell you how many flights I have been on but I have a bloody good idea what a majority of the airports looks like!
The Delta ticket also incorporated small regional airlines so on a few occasions I travelled between shows in a four seater prop plane. Burbank to Santa Barbara had to be the highlight
Now, once I arrived in Austin I bumped into Andy Robinson who stuck me on the list for the shows from then on.
It was not until the second stage that Andy and Rob Gretton (a total STAR of a man!) sorted me out a laminated ACCESS ALL AREAS pass. License to give it the big one! The first I had had since the shows between Sunderland and London in 1984.
The names you mention do not immediately ring a bell. The Plymouth gang were ever present (Kim and Karen), as was Shane and his mate from Slough. I first met Jon Marsh (eventually The Beloved) in Germany and we went to several of the gigs together in 1984 (he still owes me a nights rent for kipping in my Astra!) So many people, but so long ago. I'm knocking 38 so please give me a break! lol

PS Dont fool yourself that they played different sets each night, like they used to in the old days. Steve told me Barney refused to soundcheck so they couldn't do 586 on my birthday in San Diego on the 17th June 1989. lol

Yeah, they started doing the same-ish set in 89, didn't they ! That's two of us with Jon Marsh experiences then - I did the Beloved 86 tour supporting The Fall, and was in regular contact with Jon until he went all ambient and drippy on us :)

None, through no fault of my own. The closest they were to me is Berlin, I think. I thought about going but it would have taken me about five days as I dont like planes.

Do you know a big London lad called Simon who made the Frankfurt trip? Was in a little known band of his own at the time. Got caned by the bouncers for invading the stage at the Hammersmith Palais?
However many times you have seen New Order all that matters is what you took out of it and if you think they are fantastic then it doesn't matter whether it's 1 or 100 times. Part of me still wishes for the buzz I encountered when I saw them for the first time back at the Brixton Ace.
Interesting point regarding Jon's return journey Al. The last time I spoke with him was just before I flew over top LA to see the first Electronic shows. He said nothing about the arrest though! Although I knew there was something not right because when I tried to rent a car at Orange County Airport (to get to the Universal shows) AVIS would NOT rent me a car! Then again, we were NOT very kind to the white car we collected at Tampa Airport.
By the time Jon left for the return journey to Florida the car was in a right state! For some bizarre reason we took to it with a pen and lipstick. Poor thing never stood a chance!

'85-'86?
'85 is pretty much a blur I am afraid but I definately saw the band on a few occasions. I do vaguely remember seeing them at the in Newcastle, plus I believe there was at least one show at that ballroom place in Birmigham? Also, Kentish Town was another (bumped into Jon Marsh for the last time). There was probably a crap load more I went to but I simply can't remember! Clues anyone!?!
Other people I do remember are the male nurse from Blackpool who used to live in London, the crazy little bloke from Southampton, the mad geezer from Windsor with New Order tatoos!, and Kirk and his little mate from west London. At least some of it is coming back!

The memories are flooding back now. Melonball cocktails in this bar the evening before the show in Gainsville. We were so knackered afterwards the waitress took us back to her place. Her garden was YACK-ville in the morning if my memory serves me correctly!

6 times, mostly in Glasgow (let them come to me !) over a period of 20 bloody years ! Missed out on Joy Division although the rumours at the time were that they were due to play in Glasgow soon after returning from the USA, August 1980 I think - according to my mate who was working as a concert promoter back then.

Bill, nice rumour about the JD gig. I love stuff like that. Was at a recording studio in Stirling before Xmas - the manager is the Mrs of a New Order lad I know - and her sister is Operations Manager of the South Bank Centre in London. Found out New Order apparently reserved the Royal Festival Hall for a gig just prior to the Liverpool comeback, but then cancelled. Bit late to mention it now, obviously, but was a nice enough rumour. . .

The Leeds gig was a cracker. In the middle of the shopping centre? and I believe we had some snow at the time. I actually spent the night in Manchester before thumbing it down to the Micheal Sobel Centre gig in Finsbury Park. The Finsbury Park gig was the last time I ever spoke with Slim. Does anyone remember him and Dave 'racer' pils???
The Macclesfield show was in a badminton court wasn't it?!?! I do remember being stuck on the train station all night with a couple from Liverpool. We kept in touch for years afterwards. Funny how you meet people sometimes.

Slim? Rings a bell. So named because he, well, wasn't?
Do you remember the Wolfman? (At least, that's what we called him). Whatever gig you went to, and wherever, there was always this fcuking HUGE bloke down the front with long hair and a big beard always wearing shorts? Never seemed to know anyone, but always there.
And remember the Youth? And the 'Youth Youth Youth' chant that went up at gigs. They were a tasty bunch of fellas. Lots of tattoos of New Order in there too. Actually, mentioned a lad called Simon earlier in this thread cos we ran into him in Sweden last year and he'd done the German stuff in 84 and he had a New Order tattoo too - 'Perfect Kiss' across the top of his arm.
